5 out of 5 eggsPerfect!

Pros: Perfect replacement for the WD My Book plastic enclosures. It's been running since I bought it and it is slightly warm to the touch but the aluminum case does a fine job at dissipating the heat.

Cons: I wish it would have come with some sort of rubber feet to add to help reduce any unnecessary vibrations. The SATA cable is a little awkward if you're trying to fit an old WD My Book drive in there but it's doable.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product - Bad Company

Pros: The drive functions quite well with my 1TB/32mb Cache internal SATA drive.
Supposedly works with hard drives of all current market storage sizes.
Simple plug and play usage.
Blue/Red Status LED's on the front (see cons)

Cons: The enclosure seems slower than a standard USB external enclosure, but it works.
Blue LED does not work, poorly installed into the mechanism by manufacturer.
No support on the Bytecc website, absolutely none.
No manual for pinpointing screw holes, screw types, or installation methods.
The initial screws you do need to take out to open the drive up are philips screws, and they are in a very narrow passage making finding the correct tool for the job difficult.
Swapping drives once the bay is resealed is a hassle, but simple once you know how.
The initial screws were in there so tight one might believe they were going to break either the enclosure, or strip the screws while trying to extract them.

Other Thoughts: It would be cool if the speed were a little faster, or if it had a firewire attachment.
It works, as advertised...

3 out of 5 eggsRMA'ed Replacement works better

Pros: See my previous review too. It works well now that it was replaced. I use it a LOT and it works reliably.

Cons: The PCB board is hot glued inside the case with cheap! hot glue. Hot glue is a perfectly reasonable way to mount a PCB, however when that PCB is going to be under stresses from connectors being removed and reinserted, you should use an industrial-adhesive grade hot glue, not the plain old common hobby-grade hot glue! Needless to say, I've had to re-glue the PCB in place.

I still dislike that it uses an S-Video style plug for power. The are just not as rugged as the barrel type power connectors.

Other Thoughts: I'm happy enough now that I'm buying another one, which makes 3 if you count the model that is identical but has both SATA and PATA (which I use for on-site tech jobs).

1 out of 5 eggsNice Enclosure - HORRIBLE Power Supply

Pros: The case design is pretty nice, and the internal circuitry is nicely done, for the most part (see cons for the one issue). Internal space is close but that actually helps the aluminum case remove the heat from the drive.

Cons: I didn't get a chance to try it out. I put my 1.5TB drive in it, plugged it into the adapter, and plugged the adapter into the wall - POP instant fry. Fortunately I had the enclosure's power off so no damage to the drive.

The one not nice part about the internal circuitry is that the SATA connector on the PCB is mounted such that the connector is sideways WRT the HDD, which makes it difficult to get the short cable attached to the drive. Once attached and the drive is put into place, the PCB connector flexes quite a bit. I'd be worried about the long-term reliability of the connector and solder joints under such stress. They should have just mounted it straight on, there was plenty of room!

They gave the wrong kind of screws to mount the HDD. HDD screws are 4-40 threads, they supplied 6-32 threaded screws.

S-Video style power connector. I hate these cause they aren't easy to replace.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is loosing my respect. Their packaging and shipping quality has slowly but steadily dropped over the past few years. I ordered a HDD & 3 DVDRWs and they packed those into 2 bundles of 2 drives. Each bundle only had 1 layer of bubble wrap with no padding between the drives. I'm surprised the HDD worked and that any of the DVDRWs worked to burn discs. I haven't tried the other 2 of them yet, so we will see.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great, looks OK.

Pros: A lot of room to install HDD. Keeps HDD cool. Seems to be reliable.

Cons: The LEDs are just OK. The older Bytecc enclosure with the cat eyes looked much better.

Other Thoughts: When will these external enclosure manufacturers realize that we like the LED displays. These enclosures could be a little more flashy. We like to be proud of our electronic devices.
