1 out of 5 eggsLies, it is NOT bus powered at all

Pros: None. I bought it for a specific purpose and can not use it for that purpose because unlike what the listing here may say, it is NOT bus powered at all, even with the USB Y-cable.

Cons: False advertising. All the technical info for this device claims that it's bus powered, but that is completely false. It requires an external power supply to function.

Other Thoughts: Dont buy this piece of junk!

1 out of 5 eggsMissing a cable

Pros: A nice little enclosure.

Cons: Looks like you need two or three USB ports (one to power and one or maybe two for the "Y" data cable) - but I'm OK with that. For Firewire, you'll also need a USB port for power (or use a plug in the wall to USB charger).
Unfortunately, they left the (required) power cable out of the box, so I can't even try it. It seems somewhat foolish to pay $10.50 to RMA return a $13.99 part, so I just ordered another one. This one had *better* have all the cables!

1 out of 5 eggsdoesn't work

Pros: Offers both firewire and USB. Refund quickly recieved after return (at my expense).

Cons: I ordered two of these cases, another after the first would not work. The second did not work either. Phone call to mfgr customer service confirmed not working. I was requested to confirm that both USB connectors were plugged in.

Did not work on USB in either MacBook or PC. Did not work on Firewire on MacBook

Other Thoughts: I think the issue is the case will require an external power supply of significant power. I tried a 5v 1amp adapter which got the drive to intermittently click. but no connection to computer was recognized.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes Exactly as Described

Pros: This SATA drive enclosure does exactly what's decribed and works great, and you can't beat the price. Although bus power is not great, at least it comes with a USB power cable. I also like the fact that it has a firewire connection as an option, which most other (more expensive even) do not, which is another reason I purchased it.

Cons: None really, because it does what it says it does.

Other Thoughts: I don't know if I'm misunderstanding what a review is for, but I thought it was to help other people deside whether the purchase is worth it or not, not bash it and give it a really low rating just because it's not what "you" thought it was. I don't dissagree with the comments people write (not at all - freedom of speach), I just dissagree on giving a real low "Overall Rating" even though it's doing what's decribed.
This SATA drive enclosure does exactly what's described in the specs and features, it's not claiming to do anything other than that. And for the price? this thing is great!
I baught this enclosure as a backup. I have another enclosure I mainly use that has all the extras, which I paid more for. If you're looking for a drive enclosure that has more features, then pay the extra and don't just assume this one should do it.
I do recommend this drive enclosure for anyone not looking to pay a lot, and not looking for something special.

2 out of 5 eggskinda flimsy

Pros: I've had it for almost a year and it still works. I've babied it a bit but I have been using it as a recovery enclosure for laptop hdds so it's been opened and shut a lot of times.

Cons: This drive feels cheap. Despite the aolid aluminum body, the end caps are made from cheap plastic and are held on by small thin screws that seem easy to strip (This is more of an issue for me as I change drives a lot) The drive is also not capable of running on usb or firewire bus power alone. Regardless of drive size or speed, the enclosue needs a usb to mini power adapter to spin the drive up. Even though the power available in 7 pin firewire should be able to run any 2.5" drive, the bytecc still needs the usb power cable connected in order to spin at all.

Other Thoughts: I bought a macally PHRS250CC recently and it is much better in every way. I would recommend that any day over the bytecc

2 out of 5 eggsNo Bus Power!

Pros: Easy to install and small form factor.

Cons: I may have gotten a defective Y-Cable. My Macbook Pro couldn't detect it until I changed the USB cable. This is not a big deal for me because I use the FireWire port. This enclosure requires a dedicated USB port for power. So it will use up 1 USB and 1 FireWire ports or 2 USB ports. This sucks.

5 out of 5 eggsGood stuff

Pros: I have two of these. One holds a 4200rpm 60gb; the other, a 5400 rpm 100.

The enclosure comes with a case and a USB2 cable with two USB A plugs at the computer end and a single Mini B plug at the other. The second A plug is a power-only port on a short (4" or so) rattail. (this appears a standard configuration; I've seen it on other fast external notebook drives.)

The 4200 drive works perfectly off a single USB2 A port; the 5400 requires that both USB A's be plugged in - apparently it can't draw enough power for the faster drive through the single bus.

Both work perfectly off 6-pin firewire connections; 4-pins require that the secondary power-only USB cable be used as well. My laptop, like most, has 4-pin, so I just use the USB connection.

Speed appears to be well within nominal values, and I've had no problems with data transfer or reliability. Both drives have been dropped from normal table heights (!) onto hard floors with no problems.

Cons: None that I've noted. May be a little pricier than a USB2 only model but if your only fast connection is firewire, well...

Other Thoughts: Quite satisfied; would, and have, recommended this case to others.

2 out of 5 eggsComplete Trash

Pros: Slim size, includes lots of cables.

Cons: Does not run from bus power, must use the USB to 5V pin adapter. Defeats the purpose of a slim 2.5 portable drive. Very disappointed. Buy a different brand this is just glammed up junk.

Other Thoughts: Again, to reiterate it is not bus powered. You must use the USB to 5V pin adapter.
