2 out of 5 eggsNot for Mac

Pros: good construction

Cons: I got this enclosure expecting Mac compatibility, as it says int the product description. The FireWire ports are NOT Mac compatible, which defeats the purpose of getting such an enclosure.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid 5.25" enclosure for optical drives

Pros: Economical option for an external Blu-Ray drive. Blue power/access lamp more subtle than other enclosures. Includes USB, FW400, and FW800 cables. Uses (desirable on Mac) Oxford chipset.

Cons: No rubber feet included, no assembly instructions.

Other Thoughts: I've been happy with this enclosure for two years now. It gets light use; only being used for burning the occasional BD-R, but it functions reliably every time. I find the fan noise acceptable and the FireWire 400/800 connectivity essential. My LG BD-R drive kept making coasters with a different USB enclosure, so I hunted down a FireWire one. This is just about the only option available.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: This is an update from my previous post. Had to finally replace the fan, as the noise was unbearable. Got a new form fit function fan from e*ay for $5 with free shipping and it works like a charm. Also added adhesive rubber feet to help deaden the vibration and provide better stability to prevent the enclosure from sliding. Simple solution, but not sure why the company did not follow earlier complaints.

Cons: Too bad BYTECC did not follow up on these issues but instead discontinued it ... It is a good product that provides features not found in any other enclosure. Would have been nice if these simple fixes were provided early on.

Other Thoughts: Reconsider, you have a fine enclosure if the simple fixes are incorporated

3 out of 5 eggsLoud fan

Pros: It has FW800 ports. Installation was easy.

Cons: After 2 months the fan noise started to appear. It goes away occasionally, but it's almost unbearable when enclosure is turned on.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately there are very few options available for an external enclosure with FW800. I have to leave it on most of the time, because of the fan noise.

3 out of 5 eggsMixed

Pros: Nice handy ports, easy to assemble. Installed BluRay drive and fits nicely.

Cons: First enclosure never worked. Newegg came through and sent a working replacement. Still was disappointed because the unit had severe fan noise issues. Sounds like an airplane taking off. Other reviewers have complained too so I am not the only one. Will need to replace fan for sure Emailed customer service about issue, never heard from them... Totally hopeless and incompetent. How can they expect to stay in business with that attitude is beyond me. Case needs rubber feet. Had to install my own to make it not slip on my glass desktop.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, it is the only enclosure that offers all the ports listed at a reasonable price but with that goes the issues noted. I think if BYTECC would listen and just improve slightly the product and especially their customer service, they would have no problem in selling these.

1 out of 5 eggsFar too loud, and not Mac-friendly

Pros: It's one of the few Firewire 800 enclosures available.

Cons: - The single fan is very loud, and blows constantly.
- Letting the hard drive (or even just the Mac) sleep in OS X is a nightmare. Resuming causes odd problems that might even prevent the Mac from rebooting (fixed by a power cycle of the enclosure)

Other Thoughts: This enclosure is far too expensive for what you get. Stick with something cheaper with a better rating.

5 out of 5 eggsAll Good so far

Pros: Sturdy aluminum case, 4 connection flavors including a cable for each, quiet, nice looking, easy to install optical drive, easy to secure drive inside enclosure. Includes one Verbatim 6X 25G BD-R and PowerDVD for Windows.

Cons: No rubber feet included. But I don't need them.

Other Thoughts: The BYTECC's have been the most predictable and reliable for me so far. I have several from many different vendors. Optical drive installed is an LG BH12LS38. My preferred attachment is FW-800 and the main reason I chose this model. Update the firmware and your FW connections will daisy-chain like you expect them to. But make sure to read the instructions (Windows is required to update firmware)

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: It arrived...

Cons: DOA. None of the ports work. Tried using various HDDs and optical drives with both Mac and Windows machines.

Other Thoughts: Upset that I have to spend more money on this enclosure to ship it back. Will RMA and try again since this is one of the few products that meets my spec requirement.

2 out of 5 eggsAnother Noisy Fan

Pros: Enclosure easy to setup optical drive into. Flawless operation for first 2 weeks of use about 5 or 6 hours a day. Then ....

Cons: Then the fan noise started. First I could toggle the power to make it go away. Then it took a tap on the enclosure. Then....well my laptop wouldn't even boot with this plugged in. There isn't a real need for the fan in the optical drive config, but the interface board of the enclosure has some LSI chips that heat up some. There is where the fan is somewhat necessary. I unplugged the fan from the interface board and then the laptop booted with this plugged in ok. I use the ESATA port. Overall, time to return this. I read many reviews about this device, most had something to say about the fan. Thought I'd give it a try anyways.

Other Thoughts: I give it 2 eggs because of its flawless operation besides the fan problem. Maybe if you leave the fan unplugged you can get a few months of operation out of it til the interface board burns up. If the fan wasn't a problem I'd give it the full 5 eggs.

2 out of 5 eggsSort of regret buying this product.

Pros: I bought two of these units, got two WD SATA drives mounted fairly quickly. The case is solid.

Cons: My biggest complaint is the firewire daisy chaining. My iMac only has one FW800 port, so I have the two drives daisy chained. However if turn off the drive that the other drive is chained through, the other one disconnects. I've owned LaCie drives in the past, and I never had to have the drives powered on for the daisy chaining to work. This is stupid. Now I need to have both drives on, in order to use one of the drives. Kicking myself for paying $130 for 2 of these.
