5 out of 5 eggsSolid enclosure

Pros: Solid construction, Connection options, Heat dissipation, Price.

Cons: The enclosure's slide on lid is hard to line up properly, though if you try and try once again it will work for you. They did use the same cheep noisy little fans that fail after about 3 months like most brands i've seen.

Other Thoughts: BYTECC went a step above with this enclosure. It is inexspensive and looks rather nice when all put togeather. I would like to confirm that 2TB drives do indeed work. I have a backup system with aluminum rack and tray with SATA drives in place and it works flawlessly. If you want a solid aluminum enclosure that works well, this is it.

5 out of 5 eggsBox for CD/DVD Burner

Pros: I needed an external drive for my new Netbook to aid software loading and backups.
I bought this enclosure to install a CD/DVD burner which I happen to salvage out of a failed PC.

This enclosure was easy to assemble despite the fact that I had two beers and no instructions before I started. It did take a few minutes to realize that I had to remove the small screws on the back to open the box.

It worked fine connected to my desktop (it was tested on it first). When first I connected it to my Netbook the touch pad did not work; the curser was very difficult to move. However, I was able to overcome this issue by connecting a mouse to the Netbook; the cursor moved just fine with the mouse. The problem later went away. I think Windows 7 changed something.

Solid box…any stronger and it would be bullet proof. The power supply is built inside the box.

Cons: The box is a bit bulky and heavy, but that is not important to meet my needs. I agree with others that instructions would be help. I knew that before I bought it from other reviews. This is my third enclosure (each a different brand) that I bought. So I knew what to do. It may be tough for a novice. The instructions could be simple…just a few pictures. I would knock it down a ½ a star for no instructions, if I could score by half stars.

Other Thoughts: The closure is economical if you have a drive already. If you need to buy drive, you may as well buy a assembled drive.

If it holds up, it is a good deal.

1 out of 5 eggsUnacceptable. Potential fire hazard

Pros: Versatile. Can be used for DVD writer drive or a hard disk drive, either IDE(PATA) or SATA. However, the enclosure is very large for use with a hard drive so in practice no one would want to use this unit to enclose a hard drive.

Cons: This unit is difficult to assemble and there are no instructions whatsoever. I have sufficient experience with similar equipment that I was able to figure out how to install, in my case, a DVD writer. Even so it was a challenge. Anyone with less than advanced mechanical aptitude should avoid this unit.

Other Thoughts: After I assembled this unit with a DVD writer and turned it on it failed to operate and I soon detected the smell of burning insulation coming from the unit so it was a non-starter. I also noticed that there are several solder connections that project through the circuit board at the top near the back that may touch the metal casing when the unit is closed. Because of the difficulty of assembly, lack of instructions and potential fire hazard I consider this enclosure unacceptable.

4 out of 5 eggsgood for the money

Pros: I bought this unit for testing older drives with the ide interface, but still be able to test ones with sata, (not many out there for both). It recognized the ide dvd rom immediately but I had to play with it for a while before it recognized the ide hard drive. I had to turn the power on, then plug the usb connector into my pc, in that order, for it to recognize it as an external storage device.

Cons: I wish the end opened to be able to insert and remove cd's, dvd's from the drive without ripping the whole thing apart. You must take the 2 screws out of the switch end to remove the cover and install hdd or rom.

Other Thoughts: doesn't come with instructions

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Great idea. I would love to be able to use the variety of drives (CD/DVD, ESATA or IDE hard drives) that this enclosure supports

Cons: The first one didn't do anything. Recieved 10/12/2010.
The second one I recieved today, 10/27/2010, It seems to work with some of my drives (at least it powers on), but We can't watch TV while it is running because it causes so much interferance.

Other Thoughts: I'm very dissapointed with this product.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Works with DVD drive and Hard drive both SATA and IDE, I have a 7200AS DVD burner with this.

Size both a pros and cons...it is big but it cools well.

Cons: Size is a little bit big.
No manual but it is not hard to figure out how to use it
the pcb inside is only protected by a thin plastic sheet, easy to get short circuit if not careful with the cover.

Other Thoughts: Tested it with a 80GB IDE Hard drive and a 80GB SATA hard drive, both works.....it is now with a 7200AS DVD burner and works fine....Windows 7 64bit found them without problems.

1 out of 5 eggsEpic Fail

Pros: * Has never caused human death

Cons: * Has broken after 60 days
* Has had its manufacturer refuse to honor warranty
* Has emitted loud pop
* Has emitted white smoke
* Has refused to turn on ever since previous two items.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this to anyone (see "Cons"), not even an enemy (see "Pros").
