2 out of 5 eggsHard Drive Killer

Pros: Fast USB 3.0
Sleek black slab design
Quiet operation
Chassis is (mostly) made of metal and conducts heat away from the drive.

Cons: Front access door is cheap plastic.
White painted logo and lettering detracts from an otherwise attractive minimalist design.
Power cable has a barrel connector and doesn't feel secure when plugged in.
And the biggest con: it started frying hard drives about 6 months into owning it. Details below.

Other Thoughts: The device failed about 6 months after I got it. I installed a 2TB WD Green drive in the enclosure, clicked the power switch, the power/activity LED on the back side flickers faint red, and the drive does not spin up. I removed the drive and tested it in another external enclosure (Rosewill USB2 toaster), but it was completely dead.

Assuming it was a problem with the drive, I plugged another 2TB Seagate drive into the BYTECC enclosure, but got the same faint red LED flicker when I turned it on. I removed the Seagate drive and plugged it into my computer this time, but it too was now dead.

It is now officially the most expensive HDD enclosure I've ever owned.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap, easy to use, supports a range of drive sizes. Drives don't rattle around as other users have stated.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have three of these spinning along on top of my desk for over a year now. No burn outs, no shorted cables, just works. And they look great with big ubuntu stickers :)

5 out of 5 eggsBytecc Does it again

Pros: Easy to install the drive. Case keeps HD cool too.

Drive doesnt wabble around inside case either.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: I got a WD 2TB Green Drive to put in it to use for storage. Case/drive stays cool when not in use and even with usage never gets too hot to handle.

4 out of 5 eggsrevised review/customer support

Pros: inexpensive, portable, PNP, great for old drives laying around

Cons: RMA form states you pay to ship to them and the return shipping. cable shorted out (as stated in previous review) in less than two months after minimum usage.

Other Thoughts: this is an additional review/follow up to the review i wrote earlier, sorry for the double post; however, this is pertinent information.

After contacting their customer support department expressing my concern regarding there shipping policy, they understood and sent me the replacement cable for free (perhaps this was because i identified the issue, thus alleviating the need to send it in). Bytecc's customer support does deserve mad credit for this. this is customer service at its finest IMO. they understood the issue from a customers standpoint and made good on it. i hope this is an accurate representation of how they typically do business and continue to offer the same quality to other customers who may experience similar problems. Hopefully these occurrences are limited. I would not hesitate to purchase from them again, if they consistently take care of their customers, thanks BYTECC!!!

1 out of 5 eggspooped out less than 2 months

Pros: cheap, easy to move around, PNP.

Cons: power chord shorted out after 1 1/2 months. it did nothing but sit on my desk and it went dead?!? real quality work here.

Other Thoughts: great price used three times. power quit working on me, which makes it useless of course. i havent contacted bytecc yet, but after reading another review here where a customer had same problem, they wanted him to pay shipping there (which is fair) and the return shipping as well. Sounds like a backwards deal to me, thats the price of a new one. if that is the case, they will loose my business and and the potential business of everyone i know; natural ill be complaining a bit about a poor product, and most of them are geeks like myself.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, slim, cheap, nice minimalist look

Cons: To open it, you have to slide off the front panel and slide in the HD and press it against the SATA connector. So far so good, but once you've got the HD in, it's next to impossible to get it out - you need some kind of flat tool like a butter knife, or else you need to shake it (!!).

Using a 3.5" full-height drive, there was a gap between the top of the drive and the top panel of the enclosure. I had to insert a "spacer" (folded up piece of paper) to keep it from rattling. I imagine that the gap would be much bigger with a slimmer drive and could lead to either the drive's or the enclosure's SATA connector breaking.

Other Thoughts: I bought two and one failed (power switch stopped working). Bytecc wants me to pay to ship it back, which is fair, but they also want me to include a $10 check for return shipping. For that price, I think I'd rather just buy a new enclosure from one of their competitors.
