1 out of 5 eggsVery Bad BYTECC Experience

Pros: Absolutely none

Cons: I put a known working 40GB IDE drive in this enclosure and plugged it in. No light came on and Windows did not detect the drive, but a bad smell came out. I attached the drive using the IDE to USB adaptor previously used to test the drive, and the drive was dead.
The enclosure killed my drive, and the return shipping would be more than the refund, so I'm stuck. I've got a half dozen various Rosewill enclosures and have had only one minor problem that Rosewill quickly took care of. I thought I'd save a few bucks on this enclosure since it would be lightly used - obviously a mistake.

Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd BYTECC purchase and my 2nd defective BYTECC product. The other was a USB 3 to ESATA adaptor. BYTECC doesn't even include any contact info with their products. I won't be buying anything from them again.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Does the job. I have it hooked up to my car stereo as a more permanent installation, so it doesn't really get moved around much at all. Cable it came with is decent quality.

Cons: Quality is acceptable, but might not hold up so well with constant handling like a normal external. Works well for an embedded or permanent installation.

4 out of 5 eggsSimple, Strong, and Works

Pros: Worked out of the box (On Windows).
Hard drive is secure in place.
Strong design, meta is solid.

Cons: The USB cable provided could use better design, the pass through is entirely seperate cord, and is quite annoying.
Gets warm due to minimal ventilation.
Would not auto-detect unformatted drive with Ubuntu on Linux Kernel 2.6.xx (Had to connect to MS Windows based system in order to format as NTFS, then reconnect to Linux to reformat as EXT)

Other Thoughts: Running two of these each with a 60GB Seagate 5400 RPM drive. One to carry around, and another for NAS storage on my Asus NT-66U. Both worked great once drives were able to be formatted. The reviews I read before about the drive not being secure must not have mounted it correctly. Mine had the four holes in the bottom of the drive to mount it directly to the internal board. No issues with drive swaying within the case. The real test on these units will be how the drives hold up while being powered on for days at a time. The NAS unit was warm to the touch after a few hours of being connected.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: Super easy installation! Looks neat! Comes with carry pouch!

Cons: Small stuff, nothing to loose an egg over.
Included pouch/carry case only has enough room for the enclosure and not the USB cored. An the HDD seems to be a hair bit loose but nothing some rubber stoppers cant fix.

Other Thoughts: Great enclosure that look awesome for cheap. A must have if needing a inexpensive enclosure!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks good once I fixed it

Pros: Cheap.. USB powered. Works decent enough. Did I mention it's cheap?

Cons: After having mine for a long time, I decided to do something about the drive rattling around on the inside, what I found was amusing :) Basically the plastic end panels came attached upside down. I think I had to remove the plastic sticker off one side to remove the screws. Once I rotated the end panels, the drive didn't slide around inside anymore and the PCB fit perfectly like it's supposed to.

Also, the screw holes don't need to be threaded, the aluminum is soft enough to accept the big threaded screws and hold them securely. Heatsinks used to use the same principle to hold the fan on top years ago.

5 out of 5 eggsNice one!

Pros: Easy-to-understand install; all parts and carrying pouch included; pretty blue LED; can run on one USB plug; great price!

Cons: Very slight drive rattle (loose fit); feels like you have to really have to force the front screws in

Other Thoughts: I consider myself not at all handy with tools, but installing my old 2.5" drive was a breeze. You will need typical small diameter screwdrivers. There is a little vertical rattle (not side-to-side--drive is fixed to circuit board with 4 screws) that's easily solved with a cardstock shim. Also, the front screws are really tight; had to use a regular Phillips screwdriver to get them in. Plugged it in to my Dell laptop with Win7--recognized immediately, no problems whatsoever. Whew! Best of all, I have gotten the drive (granted, it is only a 30GB @ 4200rpm) to run on just one USB plug! The carrying case is helpful; you can get the drive and a USB cable in it, although it's pretty snug. Pretty happy with this purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsBytecc

Pros: It will take a DC 5 volt, so you don't have to depend on the USB cable for power. The cable comes with a pass attached to the power dongle, thats a good idea in theory. I like the aluminum caseing.

Cons: The screws to attached the case to its face plate that has your outlets and board attched are non existant it does come with two black screws each about 2mm too large, do to the fact that the aluminum caseing did not get threaded properly. On mine at lest

Other Thoughts: works, I like it better then the mascool

2 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: It's cheap. Inexplicable penguin lights on front.

Cons: It's cheap. Case feels brittle, and sure enough, hardly any precautions on the inside to protect the drive. Having the eSATA connection externally was nice on mine, but it appears they no longer produce that option.

Other Thoughts: I took out the board and use it for quick-swapping drives now - the case itself is just a big hassle. If you're in the market, shell out a few extra bucks and go with something better-suited to the job.

Pros: For the price, this enclosure serves as a *DECENT* USB device.
The data transfer rate is horribly slow due to it's generic controller.

Cons: The thing that ticks me off is that it says "Firewire" in the description and when it arrived, there was NO FIREWIRE PORT TO SPEAK OF!

Other Thoughts: newegg needs to review the products they sell more thoroughly before listing them
