Cons: Wouldn't assemple propertl due to a manufacturing defect.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is my 4th BYTECC external enclosure. All have been solid and reliable, including the HD1-SU3. Hard to beat for the price. Comes with a USB 3.0 micro B cable and and additional USB cable to supply 5v power. Have been using it with a 5400 rpm 250gb drive with only the USB 3 cable for power, and it seems to work fine on both USB 2 and 3 ports. Perhaps the additional power cable would be needed for a 7200 rpm drive.

Cons: no complaints about build quality. Aluminum with plastic end caps.

4 out of 5 eggsFast and Cheap

Pros: Bought this to have a small USB3 drive to carry around and quickly backup clients' data and move it when needed.

Paired this with a 2.5" 320GB Hitachi Deskstar drive that I had lying around.

Averaging about 33MB/s on USB2 (with the added second USB cable connected for extra power).

On USB3 it seems to top out somewhere between 50 and 60 MB/s (most of this is probably the mechanical HDD limits and not the enclosure.

Cons: Intermittent connection issues on USB3 with certain chipsets. I haven't narrowed it down to which specific models are the issue but this is definitely a downer.

Typically, it will start transferring in these cases and then disconnect about half way through the transfer and then reconnect immediately.

This has not been an issue on USB2

Other Thoughts: I can't take off more that one star even though the problem is really annoying. This was really a cheap USB3 enclosure and it does a really good job when it works.

The good news is that I'm not taking too painful of a performance hit if I'm forced to run on USB2 so I won't complain too much. This is just something that people who purchase this need to be aware of.

2 out of 5 eggsFollow up review - DON'T BUY!

Pros: Described in 1st review.

Cons: After a week of use, the end cap (opposite of where the cables plugs in) came partially loose. Cannot get it to stay in, is gradually getting worse. More than likely, it'll fall off, perhaps Super Glue will fix it.

For those who has Renesas USB 3.0 ports, make sure to disable power management function, otherwise it won't engage. Or update to the latest driver.

Other Thoughts: Being that this item was low priced, I figured it would be a waste of money, & possibly do the same with another one, so I'm eating the loss. No need to spend the extra shipping for an exchange, & the same were to happen again.

I simply won't buy any more BYTECC products any more. There was one of another brand that I didn't see when I ordered this, I would have bought that one instead.

However, Newegg did deliver the product in a timely fashion, as usual, so I'm leaving 2 eggs for my favorite etailer.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent, Inexpensive Enclosure!

Pros: 5 minute install. Took longer to unpack than to assemble. Price, hard to beat for a USB3 enclosure, however they're coming down as USB3 is gaining popularity.

BYTECC is a great brand of accessories, this is my 2nd purchase of this brand, they make great stuff.

Cons: On Windows 7 Pro x64, the drive kept trying to install, but couldn't. There was the constant sound of trying to install, even with a driver update, it couldn't.

The USB3 controller is Renesas brand, it's buggy with Windows 7.

However, I installed the device on my Windows 8 RP partition, it worked perfectly. That confirms that nothing is wrong with the product, it's Renesas's buggy Windows 7 drivers/controller.

I cannot deduct an egg for the fact that MSI didn't configure my notebook (MSI FX603-064US) right for USB3. That's not Newegg's or BYTECC's fault.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to install my original HDD in, after upgrading to a 128GB Crucial M4. Was planning to install XP Mode in it, but the driver/controller issue that I stated above prevented me from doing so.

But I'll be installing Windows 8 Pro (wow, Win 8 Pro x64 + Media Center addon for $40+ local tax on 10/26/12. This should work with Hyper-V quite well.
