1 out of 5 eggsReturned

Pros: None

Cons: Huge, overly bright light, very loud fan, caused system to blue-screen every time I used the Blu-ray drive that I installed into the chassis.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: USB3; accepts 5.25" devices; external PSU

Cons: Blinding activity light; may not power some 5.25" devices; very large footprint - physical dimension 10.25"x6.75"x2' - unless using as a hotswap bay I can't see using this as a HDD enclosure; proprietary power plug; muffin fan in turbo mode

Other Thoughts: This would not be a 4 or even 3 egg, had there not been a 5.25" device in my war chest this enclosure could power. 1 of 3 BD drives worked - the whole reason for purchasing. I believe it may have to do w/ power requirements but can't say for sure. Currently using an older LG WH12LS38. No issues w/ reading any of the optical formats the drive is capable of supporting; unable to speak towards burning ability. The power supply is external which will keep temperatures down but is a non-standard 4-pin plug on the device side. The enclosure is VERY large, so take measurements. The activity light definitely lets you know it's on if the tremendous whoosh of air hadn't already.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Case -- very pleased

Pros: The USB3 interface works fine with my Win7 native USB3 ports. Have a Pioneer BD burner installed and it plays a retail BD with no problems (haven't tried burning a BD yet.) Reads and burns DVD and CD with no problems. Construction quality seems just fine to me, also attractive appearance. Has a built in fan.

Cons: Lacks rubber feet, but those can be readily purchased for cheap.

Other Thoughts: I wrote the 12/2/2013 review as well, but at that time on a different PC and hadn't yet tried BD playback (BD surface scanning worked). I just tried retail BD playback and the WinXPsp3 system with a PCI USB3 adapter card didn't work. DVD and CD were fine, but not BD. My guess is a PCI adapter much-less-than USB3 speed was just too slow to support playback, result being VLC lock up.

So don't expect to playback BD using a PCI USB3 adapter cared. I presume a PCIe USB3 adapter would be fine -- its speed wouldn't be crippled.

Also, when I powered the case following connection to a native USB3 port with Win7, the drive was detected immediately, the drivers were loaded, and it was ready for flawless VLC BD playback. I've not yet seen any issues specific to this case, but for BD, you need a fully functional USB3 hookup, anything sub-spec probably won't cut it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking fine with Blu-Ray burner

Pros: Pioneer Blu-ray burner works great in it.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: Am using with pre-PCIe PC and installed a USB3 /PCI interface card to boost speed over available USB2. OS is WinXP SP2 and though I don't use the burner often, it's burned a number of DVD's perfectly, including post-burn verify. Software used is ImageBurn.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Compatible with Everything

Pros: Price is cheap enough. Solid aluminum construction and does have a fan at the rear.

Cons: Not fully compatible with some devices running in USB 3.0. Case takes up a lot of desktop space. Did not work with a Lite-On iHBS112-04 Blu Ray burner installed and connected directly to the computers USB 3.0 port. Caused system lockups in Windows 7 64 bit.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend this for installing a Blu Ray burner at all. Tried with two Blu Ray burners, and found that it locks up the main computer running Windows 7 64 bit. Burns would stop, and the interface chip in the case interferes with the device buffer, causing buffer under runs. May work ok with a regular hard drive, but right now I'll file it in the closet till I have a use for it. Still in search of an external enclosure that actually will work with a Blu Ray burner.

1 out of 5 eggsFake USB 3.0

Pros: Solid case construction with robust power supply. Comes with a nice USB3 cable. Partially works as a USB2 enclosure

Cons: This thing seemed to work OK for me as long as it was plugged into a USB 2 hub, but when I attempted to switch it to a USB 3 hub or even a direct USB 3 input, I noticed that it was causing some kind of interference that brought the system to its knees. Same effect on both OS X and Windows 7.

Now that I look into this more closely, I think that even with USB 2 cabling it's generating some kind of interference with other USB devices. I've had a relatively flaky USB setup over the last year, and surprise surprise, cutting this little gem out of the loop seems to fix everything.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any actual manufacturer with a web presence or any possibility of a firmware update. Ergo, it's just a doorstop at this point.
