1 out of 5 eggsAs much a warning as it is a review

Pros: One egg because I love shopping at NewEgg.

Cons: This is as much a warning as it is a review.
I have purchased two of these enclosures and have experienced the following issue with both.
The First enclosure I bought just less than a year ago, the second I purchased in Dec 2012.
I’ve had 3 hard drives fail during data transfer, each exhibiting the exact same diagnoses’ by Disk Drill Pro after each disk failure. Disk Drill can find the partition info, but cannot read or retrieve any data from the partition. My first disk failed in Dec 2012 just before I bought the second of these enclosures.
Windows and/or OS X cannot read from, write to, or repair the disk. The Disk space is correctly displayed, but if you initialize the disk the space then reads 0 GB or 0TB, depending on the disk original size; all partition info will be lost.
Both windows 7 and OS X 10.6 will recognize the disk when it is first attached to a computer after the failure, but if you initialize the disk both Windows 7 and OS X 10.6 are unable to read the disk capacity, (i.e. 500GB will now show 0GB)
This has happened with 3 separate disk installed in these enclosures. With the first enclosure I thought my disk just died, and about 5 months later the disk in the second enclosure died, now today, the replacement disk I put in the first enclosure died, all 3 having the exact same problem when diagnosed by Disk Drill Pro.
So be forewarned, the enclosures worked great until they fried my hard drives, now both are in the trash because I can’t afford to keep buying hard drives.

Other Thoughts: If you decide to ignore my warning, please remember to back up your data regularly, I’m glad I did.

5 out of 5 eggsBYTECC HD8-SU3 Enclosure

Pros: Small, light, well made, pretty. Exceptionally well made and the price is very reasonable. I particularly like the way the case is put
together even though the screws are very small, eyeglass hinge
size. But even so my 71 year old eyes could put the case together
with relative little trouble using the included screw driver.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsNot compatible with Windows 8

Pros: It seems to work on Windows 7, comes with cable and screwdriver.

Cons: It does not work with windows 8. I guess I just thought because it worked with 7 it would be okay since they are similar, but I was wrong. It does not work with Windows 8.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat 2.5" Enclosure

Pros: I have used this enclosure with a 160GB Western Digital hard drive and later a 500GB WD drive with no issues. Transfer rate is usually greater than 40MB/sec with the 500GB WD drive over USB 3.0 and doesn't appear to drop over time, even after transferring data for several minutes. Usually I get less than 30MB/sec with other enclosures using USB 2.0. My system is running Win7-64bit.

This enclosure is also large enough for the thickest 2.5" hard drives (12.5mm), although I don't have any of those.

I doubt there is a better USB 3.0 2.5" enclosure available.

Cons: The screws that hold the lid on the enclosure are very tiny and easy to lose. For this reason I wish the cover were snap-on or slide-on instead because I tend to switch drives around a lot.

Other Thoughts: This enclosure has a 5V power jack in case you want to use an external power supply. It could be useful when all you have is a single USB 2 jack that won't supply enough power for your hard drive.

I wouldn't leave a drive powered on in this enclosure over long periods of time because the enclosure doesn't have a fan and it is plastic and not metal, therefore it doesn't transfer heat out of the enclosure as well as a metal drive or one with a fan. Good luck finding a USB 3.0 2.5" enclosure with a fan!

2 out of 5 eggs3mm screws used in eye-wear

Pros: It is in expensive and worked.

Cons: Cradle for hard drive is made of plastic. Screws are very very small used for spectacles. I wrapped with tape because it is stronger than the screws.

Other Thoughts: There is no decent external enclosure for 12.5mm drive with standard USB interface even if you pay more. May be I will change the drive to 9.5mm.
