4 out of 5 eggsGood for the money

Pros: Works as it should (mostly), nice form factor, looks better made than it actually is.

Cons: Doesn't seem to work well with daisy-chaining self-powered hard drives like my old G-tech caddy did. Tried multiple drives but it won't power any of them. Not sure if that's a flaw or just the way it's designed...

4 out of 5 eggsFirewire 800 Capabilities

Pros: The Price is the biggest pro here. When opening the box I was skeptical at first because the construction of the device felt "cheap" and I suddenly felt a wave of "you get what you pay for" which was quickly relieved when I set it up. Looking back I laugh at myself because I tore the inside of the box apart looking for the instructions only to find there are only 4 steps which are printed on the bottom of the box. Like the reviewer before me I was skeptical about the no screw feature, but that too was quickly relieved. I plugged it in and was super impressed with the speed! Totally worth the price tag. It also looks nice sitting on my desk next to my 6 other external hdd. I am a photographer and I am looking to squeeze as much speed in transferring large picture files as I can and this was the next logical choice. I am really happy with this product thus far.

Cons: Like I previously stated the only real con is the cheap feeling construction but it worked really well so I am not worried about it!

Other Thoughts: I have only owned this for a little over a day but my hard drive transfer speed is nearly double what it used to be. I've already done some tests transferring files through Mac OS, and Adobe Lightroom and I get a much snappier response loading the 60 gb of pictures off of my hard drive. If it wasn't discontinued I would get another one for sure!

2 out of 5 eggsBad Circuit

Pros: --The enclosure is made of aluminum, allowing it to function as a giant heat sink. As a result, it can operate without a fan and is very quiet.
--The enclosure looks very nice and professional when resting by itself, or in the included stand.
--Indicator lights indicate power-on and hard drive activity.
--A hard drive can be slid into the case and then is ready to be used. No screws needed. This makes the enclosure very easy to use and saves a lot of time. I was concerned that the lack of screws would prevent the aluminum case from acting as a heat sink, but the case felt warm, indicating that enough contact in the snug environment was being made to allow for effective heat transfer.
--A few small faces of the enclosure are plastic and have holes drilled in them. I thought this might just be a gimmick, but I could distinctly feel air flow circulating through the holes. The hard drive stayed nice and cool.
--Cables for every species of connectivity were included.

Cons: --The FireWire 800 connectivity failed half way through my first backup procedure.
--The FireWire 800 cable was perfectly sound upon testing, indicating the problem had something to do with the circuitry. --The USB port still worked fine.
--I was unable to test the SATA and FireWire 400 ports.
--The cause of the failure is unknown.
--Three *possible* variables which may have contributed to the failure are:
1) The included power supply was outputting dirty power.
2) The FireWire 800 controller chip failed.
3) The supporting circuitry for the FireWire 800 controller chip failed.

Other Thoughts: --I decided to RMA the hard drive enclosure for a full refund, and get a different brand through Newegg. A very poor first impression was made between Bytecc and myself. I see no reason to try this brand again and gamble with my data at the risk of data corruption or data loss.

--Even though the circuitry failed, the case was too nice to give a rating of only one egg. So I gave a rating of two eggs.

--Newegg customer support waved the restocking fee do to the item not being able to be restocked. Cheers to Newegg customer support!
