1 out of 5 eggsPoor Construction - Returning

Pros: Compact, easy to install

Cons: Cable doesn't fully plug in to enclosure. Non-standard enclosure USB cable (not USB mini). Poor construction it's flimsy.

3 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 but only Sata II

Pros: Functions just fine.

Cons: Does not reach anywhere near the 5 gbps rated max of USB 3.0. Instead my ssd's max out just shy of 280 MB/s which leads me to believe that this is actually using a sata II chip. It seems impossible to tell what is actually on this without irreparably destroying the enclosure. I'm sending this one back, in hopes that I can find one that gets closer to SATA III/usb 3.0 speeds.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Recommended

Pros: Drive installed into case easily

Cons: Tried on 3 computers with USB3 interface. Worked on 2 of them. The one that didn't work with USB3 did work when using USB2 port. Emailed tech support but never got a reply. Tried to remove drive from case and seemed like the end cap was going to break, so instead called tech support. Guy on phone said to send email, so I did and never got a reply. The instructions are useless. Went ahead and broke the end cap and one of the sides in order to retrieve my drive. now the case in in the trash.

2 out of 5 eggsBetter than USB2 for transfer but will disconnect if you even look at it.

Pros: Small

Cons: The USB3 cable unplugs constantly. If I am anywhere other than on a flat desk (and even when I am a good deal of the time), the drive is going to get disconnected and I have to repair it. Cannot reliably use it anywhere other than a flat surface where nothing could possibly move.

Other Thoughts: On a retina MacBook Pro I am getting 40-60 MB/s transfer rates to a SATA2, 5400 RPM drive.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Slim design and easy installation.

Cons: Extremely hard to remove the drive. I am afraid of damaging the hard drive while removing it. I have very poor user experience on this product.

Other Thoughts: I will return this enclosure. It is not worth 20 dollars.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor All-Around Quality:

Pros: It arrived intact, and seemed to operate fine using USB 2.0.

Cons: Very poor quality build construction. The "cooling slots" seen on the side are indentations in the plastic side panel and do not penetrate the enclosure effectively providing no ventilation. USB 3.0 was inoperable. HDD is difficult to remove (but not impossible, see thoughts below).

Other Thoughts: In order to remove the drive from the enclosure, remove the sticker on the front panel which conceals a hole, insert a small screwdriver, and carefully push the drive out the back of the enclosure. If this method makes you uncomfortable, you can also use a small screwdriver inserted in one of the drives bottom mounting holes and the edge of the enclosure as a fulcrum to leverage the drive out the rear. Either method works fine as long as you exercise reasonable care.

I recommend avoiding this enclosure and spending the extra ~$8USD or so for the AMS Venus enclosure, which exhibits excellent build quality and works as described thus far.

2 out of 5 eggsOur time was short

Pros: Great form factor, didn't think it was too "flimsy" or badly made, though that's probably subjective (the other reviews are correct, I just didn't think they were a big deal for myself). Easy install, difficult to get the drive out.

Cons: Lasted a few weeks before the enclosure's sata-usb bridge pooped out on me. At first, I started seeing I/O errors and then started seeing the device node changing while the drive was still mounted (leading to further errors). Now, OS can't even find the drive, period. Switched my drive to a different esata enclosure and the drive still works perfectly. Problem: enclosure.

Other Thoughts: Decided to buy a Sata1/2 - USB3 enclosure based on my cursory reading. It seems like the sata3 interface doesn't even get fully utilized by drives so having a sata2-usb3 actually doesn't hurt performance much, if at all (disclaimer: I haven't look at this in detail).

1 out of 5 eggsLook Elsewhere

Pros: Haven't seen any yet.

Cons: The package actually came without the USB cable. Newegg made good on that by sending me a cable, so at least it works now - though very slowly.

Very poor design. While most of it is aluminum (good), critical parts are cheap plastic - web site doesn't tell you that. Removing the end cap with only fingers, and a pen to push into the release hole, the black plastic on the side opposite the release hole (the one that holds one end of the cap) just broke off. So now, the cap just won't go on at all.

If this were a $5 cheapo, I wouldn't be surprised, but for $20 I expected much more.

Now I have to deal with the manufacturer to get the enclosure replaced.

My advice - look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 eggsCannot get it to work at USB 3.0 speed on mid 2012 MacBook Air

Pros: Looks good and very slim.

Cons: I cannot get this enclosure to work at USB 3.0 speeds on my mid 2012 MacBook Air. I tried an Intel 320 Series 160GB SSD, and an OCZ Vertex Plus 120GB, both will not connect at USB 3.0 speeds with this enclosure. I am using OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, and I also run Windows 7 boot camp. Both OS will not connect at USB 3.0 speeds.

I have an ADATA USB 3.0 flash drive that will connect at USB 3.0 speeds with my 2012 MacBook Air, so this enclosure is probably defective.

2 out of 5 eggsFlawed design, not exactly "tool-less"

Pros: First impressions were good: the single piece of black aluminum covering the top, bottom, and left side, the minimalist appearance, and the cool idea of using tension to hold the drive in place. Windows shows it as using the AS2105 (presumably ASMedia), which isn't a chipset I can find on their website. I was expecting it to use the 1051E chipset since that's the only ASMedia chip I'm aware of that supports SATA 6Gbps to USB 3.0. But first impressions gave way to bad ones....

Cons: The first thing I noticed is that the sticker on the back is covering a hole, which reeks of shoddy build quality. But the far greater issue is that once you install a drive, THERE'S NO REAL WAY TO REMOVE IT!! You'd need the world's thinnest pliers to pull the drive out by gripping it (not really a tool-less enclosure anymore), and I'm definitely not going to shake an enclosure containing a HARD DRIVE trying to get it to pop out. The manual doesn't cover removal and Bytecc's website doesn't even have a support email address. I tried removing the plastic strip running along the right edge, but that's glued at the back, so it broke. It broke far enough back that I was able to stick a pen in the drive's screw hole to pull it out, but now I have a busted enclosure! I've been looking at this longer trying to see if there's any other way I could have gotten the drive out, and I just don't see any.

Other Thoughts: Looks great, feels great, and great design except for the enormous flaw of not having an obvious way to remove the drive without damaging the enclosure, or even a non-obvious way covered in the instructions. I suppose if you have a drive that you'll put into this enclosure don't mind never being able to use this enclosure with another drive or install any other drive into this enclosure without breaking it, you'll enjoy this model. Otherwise, this enclosure is so close and yet so far from ideal. I for one will be returning it.
