3 out of 5 eggsShort Circuited?

Pros: Easy To Assemble
Stays cool to touch

Cons: Somewhat bulky
Indicator light goes out

Other Thoughts: Purchased this item back in October. It worked perfectly fine until this week, it's starting to "lose" the storage memory--the drive shows up in windows, but when I go to click on a folder, it doesn't pull up the files I know are there.

I suspect the circuit board is developing a short circuit, because I turn the device off, then back on, the files show up fine.

1 out of 5 eggsDead in 3.4 years

Pros: Looks great, and works

Cons: Its pre-mature death might have been my fault.

A piece of black plastic on the back, where the plugs go in, fell off. I glued it back on. Maybe that fried the logic board, but I didn't notice any static.

Win 8 recognized drive, but Crystal Disk Info Portable did not. In Device Manager, you see "Initio," that's just the logic board . . . but it it was fried, why does anything show up?

I tried the drive on another enclosure of the same make an model, and it came up. Be extra careful if the plastic on the back falls off. Two other OKGear enclosure I have are still working fine, and I've had them longer.

5 out of 5 eggsThis is the one to buy

Pros: Power management, yet spin up time minimal. LED indicator clearly visible even when pointed away from user. Reliably seen by Windows 7.

Cons: Perhaps that the enclosure uses both 5 and 12 volt, so more limited on AC adapter options.

Other Thoughts: Unlike a lower cost enclosure purchased about a month ago, the Vantec reliably is seen by Windows without needing to unplug and re-plug in the adaptor. No issues with transfer rate. Should have bought this one first.

4 out of 5 eggsIt does its job

Pros: Nothing too much here, it does what it says, attaches to HDD that use 3.5 IDE connectors and you can connect it to a computer via USB drive. Supports USB 2.0.

Cons: -- It gets pretty hot, fast.
-- Difficult to disconnect IDE/power cable

Other Thoughts: I have a bunch of old drives that uses a 3.5 connector. I didn't have an old motherboard laying around so I bought this to see 1) what's on my old HDDs (1 gig anyone? lol) 2) rescue any content that I wanted to save. It does what it says, I was able to connect the old HDD up to this Vantec device and got what I wanted. Some con's though.. The device gets really hot. There is not much ventilation in the case (none...), and swapping out HDD is a pain. Since the bracket that the HDD actually mounts on gets hotter than the case, it expands, pretty much swapping out HDD not a fast process. I tried to 'force' it open, but the plastic face is held on by 2 small screws, so I knew I would break it if I put too much force. So, the only way to swap out drives was to let it cool down completely, then put in a new HDD. I had about 5 HDD that I need to go through, so as you can imagine, it wasn't a quick process... After the 3rd one, I just skipped putting it back into the case and just connected the interface directly to the HDD and used the USB to connect to my computer; much faster!!! The IDE connector and power cable were (as in my experience with these cables, in general) really difficult to remove. the space between the inner face plate to the back of the HDD was very tight, so it was a challenge swapping out HDD.
All in all, it did what it was supposed to, if you are looking for a faster, hot swap option, I would look to another device. If have just 1 HDD that you will use, and never swap out, then this will do the job.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works great out of the box. I'm using Ubuntu Linux, and it showed up as a USB drive just fine. I didn't even need to use the driver disk that they included. Goes as fast as any other USB 2.0 drive. The case feels very solid, and it has little rubber feet to grip the desktop.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: As some other reviewers have commented, I also would like a way to disable the power-save feature. All in all a good, solid product at a good price. Now I can rescue the data from my old IDE hard drives.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly what I needed

Pros: Very sleek looking and durable.

Easy to assemble. I read before that others were having some trouble sliding the tray in, but I didn't seem to run into that at all.

I got this for an older (2006) WD 250GB IDE drive. There is a little driver disk that comes with the enclosure, but wasn't needed as it started right up without having to install drivers on a Windows 7 64-bit system.

Cons: I didn't find any cons, if I had to nit pick something I'd say molex connection was the hardest part to connect with its short wiring, but it still only took me a couple minutes to finagle that into proper place.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes What It Says

Pros: Does what it says it does. Plug and play with USB. No need for installing drivers from a disk. Being able to get old files I'd forgotten about on old drives is great! Aluminum case does good job of dispersing the heat.

Cons: Super tight fit! I feel like I am about the break the thing trying to get a drive out of it. It comes with screws as if you need them to lock the drive down. You don't!

2 out of 5 eggsno power to drive

Pros: Well polished hardware.

Cons: The power connection, one of those 5 pin Din's cannot provide current to the drive after the cable is moved around a lot over time. I guess the socket gets expanded, pin can't make contact, no way to replace it or do repair job.

Other Thoughts: Last time I ever get hardware with that kind of power connection, it happened to me before with other brand.
