Turn a standard 2.5-inch Parallel ATA hard drive into a portable USB 2.0 storage device in minutes with the Bytecc HD-201U2 aluminum external enclosure. The silver aluminum casing is a great heatsink, to keep the drive cool during operation and help dissipate heat quickly when you're done.
Once you've installed a hard drive inside this slim enclosure (it measures 80x15x143 mm), you simply connect the bundled Mini USB-to-USB 2.0 cable between the drive and your computer. There's no external power necessary either, since the drive gets its power from your computer. A full manual and user guide is included on CD as is a leather wallet to store the drive in while it's not in use.

Look no further for true portability
- Pros: No extra power needed, just plug in to usb port and go (2.0 ports only); well padded carrying case stores both drive and cable; stays cool via all metal case; enclosure internal padding holds drive firmly in place (unlike other brands)
- Cons: None at all.
- Other Thoughts: I've had this for almost a year now, and it's flawless w/ my 60gb, 7200rpm Hitachi Travelstar. If you're looking at this enclosure, than you're interested in portability. The 2 most vital things to look for in portable usb enclosures are 1) no extra power needed, 2) carrying case. Don't get me wrong, this thing is fast, fast, fast, too. If someone complains of speed, tell them what rpm stands for. Construction is solid and keeps it cool. Do NOT let the price fool you. I bought this on the cheap and bought an IOGear for almost 3x's the price - and the IOGear was already returned for replacement because it just stopped working - and it needed a wall wart power brick. Trust me, w/ this enclosure, you just whip it out and plug it in - no extra power - and your singing. The best deal on Newegg!
Works Great
- Pros: Inexpensive, easy to install, very small. No separate power cable. Works like a charm.
- Cons: The case is different than pictured... twice as big. Not a big minus, but you can't just slip it in your pocket as the picture indicates.
- Other Thoughts: I got a new hard drive for my laptop, and bought this to help in transferring all my data from the old drive. Very fast, very easy to use.
I don't know what the second usb plug is for, as it works fine with just one. But, whatever! :)

Tiny Screws foul the whole thing up
- Pros: It does what it's supposed to do.
- Cons: There is one glaring mishap in the design of this thing: There are two tiny screws, philips head, that require a tiny screw driver to open, before you can use the device. Now, I put computers together often, I take out parts often, and I probably have that one tiny screw driver sitting around for doing minute computer work, but... I only have one of them... most people only have one or two at the most, it's not a common tool, it serves almost no purpose other than fixing eye glasses. So, for the love of G.o.d., Why would this product be made requiring a TINY SCREW DRIVER to unscrew these screws.
THe device is not useable without said screw driver, you can't open it to put the HDD in. Also, we all know that these things are usually 98% functional WITHOUT putting the HDD into the encasing. SO WHY on EARTH to they lock the contents of this thing with two screws that are stripped completely.

not impressive
- Pros: cheap. multi-color led is a plus. does what it is supposed to do, which is hold a 2.5" HDD. Fairly easy install procedure. This is fine if you are never going to change HDDs and for occasional home usage due to poorly designed and bulky 'carrying case'.
- Cons: cheap looking silver-painted case...looks like silver-painted plastic. Carrying case doesn't have room for usb cable, yet is 'padded' so it is bulky(I hate that...what is the point of a carrying case if it doesn't hold all the needed items! and then is bulky!). Lame 'shock absorbing' heat resistant foam that needs to be permanently stuck(peel off the white adhesive cover!) to the HDD, meaning this is not for you if you switch hdds...ever! I suppose if you are skilled, you could attach the pad to the inside of the enclosure, but that is not what the instructions say. Not a toolless design, but no mini screw driver included
- Other Thoughts: I like the rosewill rx81u better...it is slightly better designed and much better looking...and the carrying case also hols the usb cable!!!
Reliable and performs
- Pros: I have 3 now. the oldest is about 3-4 years old. They work great. Very good for upgrading your old laptop drive, and then making that old drive a backup drive in this enclosure.
- Cons: Only the small thing that they've recently downgraded the previously nice case. This is minor, but now you need to invent your own reliable way to keep track of the special 2-usb cable, which no longer fits into the new-style case.
- Other Thoughts: I upgrade a laptop drive this way: find a faster new drive (a 7200 speed, or perhaps even a SSD if you have the cash or don't need big storage!), and then either mirror the old drive onto the new one with a backup software of some sort (putting the new drive in the enclosure temporarily to do this), or fresh install.
Then when you replace the old drive, it becomes your backup. It can be put in the enclosure (good place to keep it safe), and it's extra space becomes extra space to use for backups of documents, etc. (or backup the whole new drive occasionally).
I've done this over and over. Works fine. Actually needed that backup once, too.
