AMS Venus DS-2316B2BK USB 2.0 black aluminum external enclosure turns a standard 3.5-inch internal hard drive into an external, portable storage device. It uses a cable-less connection interface inside the enclosure. Simply slide a Parallel ATA 66/100/133 3.5-inch hard drive onto the connector and in a matter of minutes you can easily increase your desktop's storage. A multi-color LED lets you know when you have power and your drive is busy reading or writing.
The drive is hot-swappable so you can quickly add or remove the drive from a system without rebooting. Plus, its design allows you to stack up to 12 USB 2.0 drives horizontally or line them up vertically. An 80mm fan is embedded within the enclosure to help keep the drive cool, but with minimal noise. Combined with the device's Dynamic Airflow Technology you get optimal heat dissipation, so you don't have to worry about heat harming your drive's data.

Could be a lot better
- Pros: Quiet, attractive, good ventilation
- Cons: Aluminum is just for show- beware of fan failures
Will not "sleep"
- Other Thoughts: As a consultant, I deal with a lot of enclosures. This unit was my standard until recently.
I have two primary issues with these after using them extensively:
1. The firmware never shuts the disk down during periods of inactivity. For typical backup applications, this wastes power and shortens drive life
2. The aluminum enclosure is just for show. The drive is not thermally coupled with it in any way, and without active cooling by the fan, your drive will overheat. I learned this the hard way- the fan went out on one of my units and killed a 250GB drive.
I do far prefer enclosures with active cooling, and thought this unit was "the best of both worlds", being both aluminum and having a good fan. This is not the case- the aluminum contributes *nothing* to the drive's cooling. Beware fan failures...
Best value! Excellent quality!
- Pros: Beautiful design, overall build quality (metal body), very compatable chipset (Win/Mac/Lin), great housing (durable plastic, large fan) and VERY quiet. Couldn't be better. GREAT price!
- Cons: None at all other than I should have ordered more then one!
- Other Thoughts: From the moment this product arrived in the mail (2 days after ordering, with UPS) I was impressed. The packaging was very nice (store quality) and installation was too simple. I literally had this thing wired and running in under 5 minutes. There is absolutely NO fan noise and the case stays even with room temperature. There was a lot of thought put into the design, both external and internal. Even the LED on the front is perfect brightness (medium). Buying another next week!

- Pros: Nice case, easy access to drive, cooling fan
- Cons: Not recognizable by OS after reinstall...Manual states I will have re-initialize will result in lost of all data on drive.
- Other Thoughts: Have a cheap no-name enclosure which was recognizable by OS after reinstall.
Runs Cools and Quiet
- Pros: Easy to install. Readily recognized by the system when turned on. Just set the jumpers, move the power bus to fit and you're installed. A large fan cools the entire unit. I have three of these units installed.
- Cons: Having some difficulty getting the system to go into sleep mode when used as a DVR extender. On my server, I expect it to behave differently. No such luck yet.
The power supply is not integrated, it is a power pack.
Great product
- Pros: Have had this product for 2 years now. It works excellent. Keeps the drive cool without any noise. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PRODUCT!
