1 out of 5 eggsDimensions Incorrect

Pros: I don't know - it won't meet my needs because it's not big enough for the mobile IDE rack I'm trying to use with it (KF21-IPF)

Cons: The dimensions advertised for this device are incorrect. I am extremely upset with the manufacturer, Coolmax, because I went out of my way to email their support department and ask them to confirm the dimensions provided on NewEgg, and they sent me a short arrogant response indicating that the dimensions were accurate. I received the enclosure today, and it is actually 170w x 260d x 65h. Despite the fact that I did my homework, I'm now going to be out the shipping expenses because of Coolmax's incompetence.

Other Thoughts: I love newegg - I hope this review helps someone avoid the same trouble I had to go through.

5 out of 5 eggsI heart Coolmax!

Pros: Everything works, it has an exhaust fan in the back, which just about every other external case I looked at DOESEN'T. Which is why I bought this.
Sits nicely on top of my tower.
Comes with everything needed.

Cons: Instructions of assembly are suitably vague, even with a pictorial accompniment - But if you are at all PC building savvy, you won't need it. The diagramme also says that the clear bump on top of the case in back holds the LED indicator, in fact these are up front in the lower R corner. The front panel is removable but unless you remove it entirely, there's really no place for an air draw.

Other Thoughts: Have to see when HD's are on sale again and buy another. This is a little more pricey than the other external enclosures BUT it's got
a fan in back.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case

Comments: I've had a total of 9 of these over the last 2 years. Of the 9, one of the cooling fans went out so I replaced it. I still have 8 of them running with HD's in them (5x 120Gb Western Digital's, 3x 200Gb Western Digital's). They are great for quit plug and play action, keep the HD's really cool.

Just so that everyone knows. You do not have to format a hard drive to put it into the case for it to work. The hard drive is read as a "Massive USB Storage Device." I keep the face plates off of mine, but you don't have to as they stay at a reasonible tempature with them on. I just like to keep mine really cool.

3 out of 5 eggsBenq CD_DVD

Comments: Case is a great case. Seems to work great for hard drives. However, for CD_DVD drives there are a few issues. First, the Pioneer DVR-109 writes disks acceptable, but verifying is at 1X. Then Benq 1620 and 1640 do not work in the enclosure at all.

5 out of 5 eggs

Comments: Used for moving my 250gb WD around. Enclosure/system have worked great, and did *NOT* have to format my drive. (It had a pre-existing NTFS partition) definately 5 stars. Great Product.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid unit

Comments: I am using this enclosure to backup a Windows 2000 Server. Western Digital 80GB HD formatted and partitioned with no problem using W2K Disk Manager. Quiet fan, HD remains on 24x7, runs for 15 minutes nightly to do backups on separate logical drives. I use another unit to rotate out weekly for security purposes. Makes a great alternative to tape backups!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product from a fabulous company

Comments: As usual, newegg delivers the goods. Ordered on Wednesday and is at my door in MD by Friday using free shipping. It took me half an hour to install my old 40 Gb drive and I was operational

Comments: Installed 160gig HD with no problems. Fan is quiet. Does a very good job at keeping my HD cool. Good solid construction unlike other models. Activity lights are easily seen without the high beam effect. Buying a second one for dvd burner

4 out of 5 eggsNice little unit for the price

Comments: I had no difficulty installing a spare 80 gig hard drive in it.

*However*... it's probably just my normal paranoia, but I did not like having to mount a hard drive directly to the metal tray. I don't know if it would short anything out, but I don't like taking a chance.

What I did was to take 4 brass motherboard standoffs and screw them into the holes in the bottom of the drive. I then used the screws that came with it to screw into the standoffs to mount the drive.

Voila, no metal to metal contact. It fits just fine with the standoffs attached.

As someone else noted, the fan is on the opposite side when using with a hard drive.

It uses tiny thumbscrews to loosen the metal tray so you can slide it out. Bigger thumbscrews would have been nicer. Someone with large hands could have a problem with these.

It does have a drive light, and a power switch.

I had this hooked up and running in just a couple of minutes. So far it seems to be working quite well. I think I'll get a couple more. <g>

4 out of 5 eggs

Comments: Bought for Sony DRU-510a. Unlike other reviews noting a difficulty in opening the unit, this Coolmax enclosure only requires you to loosen (they won’t fall out) two thumbscrews, and the "guts" slide out from the back.

Another benefit is the external power brick. Other units place the AC/DC converter inside, which creates unwanted heat.

The drives are screwed into the base of the rack, so no adapters are required for hard drives.

The fan cutouts on mine are in the correct place and the fan is “quiet”.

Once the DVDRW was installed with the supplied screws (two screw sizes are included), I turned the unit on and plugged in the USB cable. WinXP automatically found the enclosure, and the drive, and I was good-to-go in five seconds. DVDs burn 4x no problem.

Cons:
- I had to enlarge the front opening so _my_ DVD-RW would open. (Sony used a large faceplate)
- Not sure if existing hard drives have to be formatted before use.

Overall:
- It is inexpensive and it works well! Newegg rocks!
