5 out of 5 eggsWorks flawlessly since 2/1/2012

Pros: No problems since purchase. Use almost daily and has held up very well. USB and Firewire work to whatever I connect to.

Cons: The blue LED is bright.

Other Thoughts: I would purchase this again and I have recommended it to others.

5 out of 5 eggseasy-to-use, low-cost, good item

Pros: Easy to set up. Firewire connection = bootable start-up drive on a Mac, A good way to get use of an old IDE drive. Durable aluminum case conducts and dissipates heat.

Cons: Absurdly bright "on/activity" LED light on case (cover with a dot of black tape & it's still bright enough). Case is a little larger than some, but obvious durability offsets this.

Other Thoughts: One of the very few IDE drive, firewire, bootable enclosure options available. In my opinion, the best choice of this combination of parameters.

5 out of 5 eggsNever a problem

Pros: Small and solid with good heat dissipation. Firewire or USB. Rubber cushioning keeps it from sliding around on the desktop.

Cons: None really, but gosh that blue LED is bright.

Other Thoughts: I have two of these and use them weekly to clone the drives on two iMacs. They get warm but not hot. I've carried them around in a laptop bag and never had a problem with them. If I needed another one I'd buy without hesitation.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product. Great service.

Pros: Easy install. Good directions. Mounts and operates quickly via firewire connection.

Cons: Needed to purchase Firewire 400 to 800 cable to connect to a newer Mac. (Newegg offers an inexpensive cable, so no big deal.)

Other Thoughts: We (my wife) fried our PowerBook last week. I order this enclosure from Newegg yesterday and got it today. It's 10:00AM and I already have the hard drive installed and viewable on our newer MacBook, via the firewire port. It opens and transfers nearly as fast as the internal drive! Great Product. Most excellent service. Thank you Newegg! Thank you Macally! And thank you for showing me how to safely rip apart my old laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsGave life to my old iBook HDD

Pros: Great case for putting old PATA drives to good use. Sturdy enclosure, comes with all the cables you need.

Cons: Wish it was cheaper, but understandable price for the quality.

Other Thoughts: Upgraded my old iBook G4 hard drive, put my old drive into this case and set up a bootable version of OSX Leopard. I use it for testing / rebuilding old legacy macs. Perfect enclosure for this job.

5 out of 5 eggsOutdated but Excellent Extern HD Case

Pros: Supports USB 1.1/2.0 and Firewire
Sturdy feel and look to the case, built out of aluminum

Cons: Obsolete now (as of 2011)
HDs today are no longer IDE

Other Thoughts: I have a number of old HDs that are still functional and reliable, but my new computer and laptop don't support IDE HDs anymore. This product is great for me to utilize them. I like the Firewire port on this extern case as it allows me to connect it with my old Mac, which has the old USB 1.1--too slow--and FireWire 400--good enough for transferring files.

4 out of 5 eggsWorked perfectly.

Pros: - Worked fine.
- The combination of Firewire and IDE allows you to boot from the salvaged hard drives of older Macs that have just died.

Cons: - It includes one of those little USB power things, so I assume it can't run off of only one USB port. Only get this if you need both IDE and Firewire.

Other Thoughts: The only solution on or any other place I tried that allows you to boot from an external IDE drive using Firewire boot on a Mac.

Had a client who needed access to a program that was only installed on an iBook hard drive, an iBook that had just died. Just ripped the HD out of the old iBook, popped it into this case, booted from an old iMac and was up and running in seconds.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Quick shipping
- Generally hassle-free recognition in Windows XP
- Enclosure is extremely light and easy to carry

Cons: Occasionally, Windows will fail to detect the drive when running through two USB connections. This is normally fixed by simply turning it off and back on. It's possible that this could be an issue with the OS or drive rather than a problem stemming from the enclosure.

Other Thoughts: As others have mentioned, the splendor from the light on the front of the enclosure is blinding. If possible, have it turned away or sitting behind a larger object to eliminate direct visibility.
