4 out of 5 eggsUltimate PSU

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: This is a very nice power supply. It is totally quiet, since it is fanless. It is highly efficient, since it is 80PLUS Platinum.

Cons: It costs a lot, so it would take a long time to pay for itself through electrical savings. Its efficiency drops at low loads.

Pros: extremely well made, full modular, all black aesthetic, fanlesss

Cons: all sata device power connectors are right-angled ones. i have to use an adapter because my ssd mounts from the bottom leaving no room for the right-angled power connectors.

3 out of 5 eggsQuiet for a few hours, then..

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Fully modular unit and flexible cables made installation quick and tidy. Included with the unit is a bag to hold extra cables or other parts from a build; very useful. Completely silent most of the time.

Cons: At random times a coil whine will start that is easily audible from 2 meters away in a quiet room. Tried shutting down my system, and the whine persists. Then I have to use the switch on the back of the PSU to cut power completely. Put the computer on a known to clean and correctly grounded source of power, it will still happen. I've also tried using a fan to blow air directly to the PSU so it will be cooled w/ the same results.

Other Thoughts: I've never had a problem with seasonic units before, I've been recommending tis brand to family and friends for years, and have heard nothing bad. So these fanless PSUs must just be the exception.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Andrew, Sorry for the inconvenience, can you please contact newegg@seasonicus.com over this matter. Thank you.

1 out of 5 eggsDead On Arrival

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: The idea of it perhaps? Bute really, don't know, has not worked yet

Cons: I received the unit, tried testing it (jumper test, PSU tester, plugging into mobo) and the unit shuts off immediately. I tried this with and without the connector to eliminate a possibility of a short in the connector.

Out of options, I did an RMA on the unit. The RMA process with shipping times took around 2-3 weeks which isn't terrible turn around time, so I was happy with that. However, the unit came back with the exact same issue.

From what I can tell, I think they replaced the relay during RMA. The relay I do not think was ever the problem as the relay clearly closed and then opened immediately (hear the clicking). That behavior makes me believe that the short circuit protection has kicked in. So, I feel there is an internal short. How the RMA department did not find or test any of these issues is beyond me.

I know DOA units happen from time to time and that does not bother me too much. The fact that the RMA came back DOA is completely unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, Please note, it is always best to test the PSU with the MB (both cables) and a HDD together to see if the system boots. If even for the 2nd PSU that you have received still exhibits the same issue, then perhaps very likely it is another issue possibly the MB. If you have any questions, please contact me at newegg@seasonicus.com Thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsworth the money

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Now that I've bought a fanless PSU, I'm not sure I can go back. This PSU is worth the extra money, and in a well-ventillated case, should last for a decade or more. No complaints. They didn't need to include a felt carrying bag or the chef-knife-style cord carrier.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsFAILED AFTER A SHORT WHILE

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Really quiet. There may be a hf hum, but my ears aren't good at high frequencies. According to my Killawatt meter, its very efficient compared to every garden variety that I have on hand. I tried a power supply tester and the volts are right on spec for all outputs.

Cons: I installed the PSU in an existing computer that had a cheapie noisy PSU leaving the only sounds from the disk drives and a cpu fan. I had left the case open for disk drive swaps and all of a sudden there was a spark inside the Seasonic Platinum PSU with a loud SNAP and of course it quit working. I had maybe 12 total hours of use on tPSU before failure. The total RMA process took a little over two weeks and UPS ground to CA from Connecticut cost $19+ dollars! Since these are PREMIUM COST power supplies,
warrantied for SEVEN years, kinda unsettling.

I swapped out the Seasonic for a cheapie while waiting for repair/replacement. After the failure, I noted something rattling around inside when I shook it though I couldn't see what it was. I would have opened the case to see what blew, but they have a sticker that states "warranty void if broken" so its still a mystery. I concurr with other comments about ditching the fancy packaging and velvet bags and improving quality
(design or components -- who knows) and dropping the price.
The whole idea of "ultra efficient" PSU's is good, but the folks in component testing/procurement and maybe design fell down on the job! I have another Seasonic unit which I'm now starting to worry about. If its the same component that fails often, they got to get it together.

Other Thoughts: SEASONIC should pay for shipping cost back to their depot because if the units have very low failure rates that shouldn't bankrupt the company and would be good PR from their customers. This is a PREMIUM PRICE unit warranted for SEVEN years already!

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood and silent

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: No fan - completely silent
High quality parts
No problems
Modular cabling

Cons: higher cost

Other Thoughts: I have the previous version of this power supply (the Gold Certified instead of Platinum Certified), and it has been working well for over a year.

It is in a TJ08e case, with a I5-2500k overclocked to 4.5GhZ, and a recent upgrade from a 560 GTX to 760 GTX card. The power supply configuration tools say this system should need a 450w supply, so it is close to the limit but no problems so far.

The TJ08 case is perfect for this power supply: the large front intake fan forces air into the case, and the top mounting position for the power supply with a vent above matches the top grill of the supply and allows the air to flow out the top.

Next time I might get one of the Seasonic X models that have a fan that switches on and off based on temp, as by all reports they are very quiet as well, and the backup of the fan is comforting, but for now this is still working perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat PSU

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Easy installation, quiet like a fox. Been using this for over a year in my HTPC and things are running great, even on the hotter days in my non-air conditioned house.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsSilent Champion

This review is from: Seasonic SS-460FL2 Active PFC F3, 460W Fanless ATX12V Fanless 80Plus PLATINUM Certified, Modular Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: The biggest pro of course is that this thing is completely silent. I haven't heard any coil hiss coming from my unit...and even if there was I doubt very much it would be audible once the case is enclosed. I use it in a HTPC/file server in my living room with the rest of my HT equipment and it was just what the doctor ordered after my Antec died on me. Admittedly, I have it mounted in my case as instructed, but the case lies horizontally on its side opposed to its intended vertical position, thus causing the vents of the P/S to be inverted. I was worried that this would cause some issues with the heat dispersion, but it is still running cool and after about 3 months of constantly being on, it is still working like a champ.

I never owned a Seasonic P/S before and was impressed even with the packaging. It may seem naive to think that the quality of the packing is related to the quality of the product, but I for one believe it shows the company cares about how it is perceived by its customers, and that their commitment to quality will likely extend to the product. To this point, it seems that perception is spot on in this case.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This thing is worth the few extra dollars compared to other units out there that compare. For the fan-less design and quality of the product, it is worth every penny from what I have experienced thus far.
