5 out of 5 eggsPower good enough for a workstation

This review is from: SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Very well made
Sanyo Deki exhaust fan
Modular design
Hybrid operation
Excellent packaging

Cons: Expensive but well worth it
Exhaust scheme affects chassis selection
No motherboard status monitor link
Hybrid selector switch is not external
Some would say the packaging is overkill

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent PSU, typical of the offerings from Seasonic. Anyone who builds machines for mission critical applications knows the reputation of this fine company. Many high end units from other manufacturers are simply rebranded Seasonic devices. If you simply want the best PSU money can buy, there is no substitute for a genuine Seasonic in your system. The PSU is one utem you should never skimp on.

The unit I installed is whisper quiet but not totally silent if the fan is spinning. Although the unit can operate up to half power with the fan stopped in hybrid mode, I chose to leave it spinning for that little extra cooling oomph the Sanyo Deki fan provides, augmenting the airflow provided by the four case fans inside the workstation.

Base System spec in brief:

Raijintek Aeneas micro ATX cube chassis
Gigabyte B85M-D3H system board
Intel Xeon E31246V3 at 3.5GHz
Noctua NHU12S CPU cooler with two NF-F12 fans
32GB (4X8GB) Kingston Value RAM
Icy Dock Armor 2 3.5inch hot swap for two SSDs
Intel 730 240GB SSD for Windows 7 Pro
Two WD Blue 1TB HHDs for file storage
LG 16X MDisc ODD for Bray, DVD and CD

5 out of 5 eggsModular, 860 watts, beautiful, platinum efficiency. Easiest purchase of the build.

This review is from: SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: I bought two of these for two identical Intel 4790k systems running Nvidia GTX 970 cards. Gets it done nicely and saves some money on the power bill. Modular design makes it easy to keep cable clutter to a minimum. Actually a good looking power supply with no frills in the lighting department. Easiest purchase of the entire build. Also powers a SSD, 3TB HD, & DVD Blu-Ray.

Cons: None. Had it 4 months now with zero problems.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid power supply

This review is from: SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: - Seasonic quality and attention to detail. The unit feels sturdy and well-built. No sharp edges.
- Fully modular.
- Platinum efficiency.
- Runs cool.

Cons: - Price.

Other Thoughts: I got this as I intend to OC and run 2 video cards in the near future. It may have been a bit of overkill, but my hope is that this will last a good, long time.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: The packaging itself was impressive, looked like someone actually put some effort into making sure the product would arrive as undamaged as possible. Inside, I found more cables then I know what to do with, which is perfectly fine for me since I have no idea what the future holds, but am glad I'm probably more than prepared for anything cable-wise.

The power supply itself seems well constructed, solid and sturdy. The ribbon style cables is also a plus, for me at least, since they aren't as bulky and can be manipulated around my case easier than traditional cabling. It also matches my color scheme. Cables were easy to plug in and out, and I didn't have a problem 'clicking' the main cable into my board as others have stated; it went in easily and without fuss. The cables are also separated, with one group containing the more modern cables (PCIe, CPU, SATA) and the other with what I would term more legacy ones, like Molex. Thoughtful of them in my opinion. The soft shell bag was also a nice touch.

The hybrid selector is one the main points about this product that I enjoy; most of the time the fan isn't even spinning, which saves on the fan's life. When it does, during heavy gaming mostly, it's quiet as a mouse and there was one point when I had to take off the side panel to make sure it was still working. I hope this will aid in stretching the unit's life as long as possible.

For my needs, 860W was the perfect balance between 'overkill' and 'just enough', since I would like to expand in the future (hopefully within seven years), and don't wish to skimp on such an important component. Its platinum rating was also a major pro for me, since I wanted the most energy efficient unit possible, even if I did have to pay a bit more for it.

Overall, extremely pleased thus far.

Cons: It isn't much of a complaint, but I do wish the fan had come installed on the bottom of the unit, as my PSU is mounted on the bottom of my case. I would have preferred the unit drawing in air from beneath my case. But, since it is pulling air through the top, and because of the configuration of my components, my video card is basically supplying the power supply with warm air.

It should be noted that yes the unit CAN be installed upside down, but then the Seasonic insignia and all the writing are upside down as well. Again, this is more of a minor inconvenience and doesn't detract from the product itself, hence no eggs taken off, but still worth mentioning if others are as OCD as I am when it comes to stuff like that. If it doesn't bother you, then disregard that completely.

Another noteworthy thing is that the unit that arrived at my door was black, not silver. Not sure if Newegg's pictures haven't been updated or I just got the luck of the draw, but still worth mentioning. Not a big deal, since the unit still works as advertised, but still would have preferred silver since I wanted it to match my case.

Overall, these are just minor things that bug me; this thing doesn't really have any true cons thus far

Other Thoughts: This is my very first product from this company and I'm very satisfied so far. Of course it's longevity will be the ultimate decider, but with a seven year warranty behind it I can't imagine having an issue, or if I do at least I can get a replacement with minimal effort/cost.

Lastly, I had a 120mm bottom mounted fan that I had to remove because the cables wouldn't have enough clearance. This isn't Seasonic's fault mind you, but if someone has a midtower case with a bottom mounted fan AND power supply, it's definitely worth noting. My specs are below for a power-needed comparison; I've calculated mine to be between 400-450W, but like I mentioned above I wanted plenty of space for expansion which I plan to do over the next few years.

Core i7 4790k (OC'd to 4.6GHz)
GTX 680 (soon to be 980 in two-way SLI)
16GB RAM (upgrading to 32GB)
Intel 730 SSD
Blu-Ray Drive
ASUS Maximus Formula VII
*Enermax Coenus Mid-Tower Case*

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic PSU

This review is from: SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Stable power
Hybrid mode works flawlessly
Runs cool and quiet

Cons: Almost unnoticeable, but distinct buzzing or coil whine
Would have preferred flat cables, or option to buy other cables

Other Thoughts: This is a great PSU powering my current rig. It's 160mm in length, so it should easily fit most cases (it was tight, but fit in my FT05)

The hybrid mode is great. I've left it switched in the hybrid position and even after stress testing my machine with Prime95, OCCT, and 3DMark, the PSU fan hardly ever turns on. Combined with my case and the rest of the parts, it's cool and quiet.

I have two knocks against the PSU, but neither warrant docking an egg. The first is the cable selection for the 24 pin motherboard connector; I would have preferred a flat cable set or at least the option to purchase this from Seasonic. I've looked online for custom cable sets but the costs are ridiculous (almost $150 USD).

Second, and I should probably dock an egg for this, is the almost inaudible coil whine/buzzing sound. I won't dock an egg because where the case is positioned (under my desk), I can't hear it. In fact if my ears are close to the case I can't hear it above the background noise. In other words if it's on my desk, I still don't hear it. But if I have my ear pressed up against the PSU intake on the case, or around where the exhaust is, I can hear it. It's not a condition which manifests under load, it's almost always there. Like I said, I have to go out of my way to hear it, but I do wonder if I'm barely hearing it and trying to ignore it.

All in all, another great Seasonic PSU (my third, fourth if you count the rebranded PSU from Corsair that's in my previous rig). The previous three have been running 24/7 for 2-3 years now, with nary an issue.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on Arrival

This review is from: SeaSonic Platinum SS-860XP2 860W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Pros: Couldn't tell you a single pro since it was dead out of the box.

Cons: The whole "brand new out of the box and refuses to even turn on " thing is a pretty big con.

Other Thoughts: Do you like paying hundreds of dollars for broken items? Then SeaSonic is the company for you! Absolutely shameful. I wouldn't recommend SeaSonic to anybody after this experience.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Jon,
We do our best to ensure top quality but at times, issues can happen due to transport or other issues.
For the power supply, did you make sure to connect both the 24Pin & the 12VCPU connectors?
Did you RMA this unit with NewEgg or with Sea Sonic USA? If you have any questions or concerns, please write to: newegg@seasonicus.com Thank you

Pros: 860w, removable power cables, efficient, well built, nice bag for unused cables.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Love this power supply. All the cables your going to need for 99% of builds. Being able to remove unwanted cables is amazing, as it helps keep your case organized. Would recommend to anyone looking for a 860W power supply, as it seems like one of the best on the market.
