Turn any Serial ATA hard drive into an external USB 2.0 storage device in minutes with the Thermaltake BlacX N0028USU hard drive docking station. The dock supports all 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch SATA hard disk drives up to 2 TB and offers USB2.0 transfer speeds up to 480 Mbps.
Installation requires no screws or tools whatsoever. Simply pop your hard drive into the dock, plug it into your computer and you are set! Hot-swap support means you can use multiple hard drives with your computer without having to reboot. The dock also maximizes heat dissipation and exhaust to protect your device from damage and extend its life.
Compatibility with both PCs and Macs makes the N0028USU adapt to multi platform environments.
Pros: Easy to set up and use. No need to install drivers for XP and above. Takes up very little space. Good price.
Cons: The eject mechanism seems a little flimsy, like it could break after a lot of use.
Other Thoughts: I work at a video editing facility and we have to use hard drives quite often to back up project or transfer large amounts of data between computers. We use internal hard drives because of the cost and we had been using hard drive bays in the computers which requires the computer to be shut down and restarted.
These bays have been a huge time-saver and they work exactly as expected. It would be nice if this model had an esata option, but the USB 2.0 is fast enough to edit video from.

Outstanding External Enclosure
Reviewed By: Gavster on 12/29/2009
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This thing rocks - what a genius concept. Setup could not be simpler - plug in power and USB, drop the drive in and you're in business. Bonus points for taking both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA drives.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Originally bought this for my dad whose Seagate FreeAgent external drive died (due to controller issues - the drive was fine) - I pulled the drive from the FreeAgent enclosure and popped it into this and it worked just fine.
Also ordered one for myself after setting this one up.

Works great, plug-and-play with Win 7
Reviewed By: Andrew on 11/26/2009
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Works great and as advertised. Plugged in the power, USB, and hard drive, then turned on, and the device was immediately recognized and ready to use in Windows 7 (64-bit Pro).
Hard drive was a brand new 3.5" WD Caviar Blue, plugged in no issue, no problems initializing and formatting the drive for use. The dock itself is good quality plastic and has enough weight with the hard drive plugged in that I have no concerns about the foundation or stability.
Works as fast as any USB powered external drive. I only need this for backing up purposes, so eSATA wasn't high priority. I especially like the ability to hot swap, so now when I get new backup drives I can just get 3.5" drives as opposed to continuing to buy externals.
Cons: Could stand to be $5 cheaper.
Other Thoughts: I am a photographer, so I have well over 2 TBs of data in the archives that I backup. This allows me to not deal with the cost of a NAS, or hassle of a second computer or case large enough to hold umpteen drives. All I have to do is buy a new internal drive, which saves me a good $30 to $50 each time over an external.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Worked like a champ with Windows 7 notebook Easy to use - connect via USB cable, plug it in, insert drive, hit the power button & you're set! Solid construction, compact size. Includes USB cable & AC adapter - ready to go out of box.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Purchased when desktop motherboard died. Needed to access data on the hard drive from new laptop. Worth more than the price paid to have access to data (which had not been recently backed up), plus now have drive for external backup (which I promise tol do!)

Compatibility Issues

Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Cheap on shell shocker, works with some drives.
Cons: Doesn't work with my new Hitachi drives, which is why I bought it. Exchanged with TT already, but same issue. Support says there are no incompatibilities. No real resolution.
Other Thoughts: Seems to be hit or miss on drive compatibility -- probably the last TT product I will buy (due to the support more than the product itself).
