Yes. I am using this on windows 7 64 bit. Works great. Though in my old motherboard I had some issues with the eSata connection crashing. USB works great though.

My vista desktop has died, can I put a hard drive out of it and into this docking device and them thru the USB port use that drive on my Windows 7 laptop?

Yes you can, but the thing is that if you had a password or the disk was protected you might not be able to access it. But yes in theory you can do that. Make sure you know that the hard drive is a sata connection, it will not work with IDE hard drives. Good luck

This dock has worked flawlessly for us on all 2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard drives. Works good with 3GB/s & 6GB/s, both 5400rpm & 7200rpm hard drives.  Drive manufacturers we use WD, HGST, Fujitsu, Toshiba, & Samsung drives. We have not had the opportunity to try SSD drives yet, but I doubt there would be a problem. This Thermaltake dock has out lasted two other competitor docks we have used. I would definitely buy another.

E-Sata or USB 3.0?

I find that esata on this is much faster than USB 3.0 but I also think this only supports USB 2.0 speeds.  I have not compared the two but I have it plugged into a USB 3.0 port on my computer. I have 2 of these and they are very handy.

Question 6

I've heard it locks up, corrupts files, many are DOA.. Can someone confirm that they aren't having any issues?

I did have a problem with the e-sata connection on my previous motherboard, it would BSOD or just freeze up on file transfers and I would have to task manager kill the transfer. I have not tried with my new gigabyte board though but am happy with my usb transfer speeds. I have had no problems what-so-ever with the usb connection. I have transferred all types of files via usb and nothing has been corrupted, cancelled, or crashed. Hope this helps.

Remedial question: Will this work with the hard drives out of my of my old Dell Dimension desktop and my Toshiba laptop?

The answer is maybe!  "Old" doesn't really mean anything, what matters is are the drives SATA (will work) or PATA ("old" IDE ribbon cable type, which will NOT work)?

On the overview it says that it supports up to 2TB but in the specifications it says 3TB do you know which it is? I have a 3tb that I want to use with it amongst other things, but I don't want to get it and not have it work with it.

Yes. Tested with Seagate Barracuda 3.5" 3TB internal drive. Although to partition the complete 3TB drive has to be formated in GPT instead of NTFS.
