A patented designed enclosure from Thermaltake – the BlacX ST0005U -- offers convenience and high performance. Supports any 2.5” and 3.5” SATA hard drives up to 2TB, the ST0005U turns Serial ATA hard drive into an external USB 2.0-and-eSATA storage device.

The BlacX ST0005U features eSATA (external Serial ATA) and USB 2.0 interfaces offering speeds up to 3Gbps or 480Mbits per second, respectively. This flexibility allows you to use your hard drive at its full performance where eSATA is available and still has the option of using USB where eSATA is not available. The dock station is hot swappable, letting you plug and unplug the unit without needing to reboot.

Compatibility with both PC's and Macs makes the ST0005U adapt to multi platform environments.

eSATA Speed only 1.5 Gbps

Pros: Supports every drive I have, including Blu-ray and DVD drives.

Cons: eSATA speed is half the advertised 3 Gbps speed because of the Initio chipset used. Please see my video review for pictures of the item, board and chip.

Other Thoughts: Thermaltake that this device didn't use an Initio chipset and asked me to contact them. I never heard from them after sending pictures of the chip.

Great... when it works..

Pros: Simple operation, Esata is great!

Cons: It worked quite well for about 2 weeks, then it stopped working. I turn it on and the red activity light stays on with or without a hard drive. I tried both USB and ESata without success. Also, drives get REALLY hot.

Other Thoughts: It seems hit or miss to me. Great idea, but might need some refinement.

Pros: Using it for tertiary removable storage of server data. Takes a little setup for 64-bit systems, but overall a great solution. Love the fact that it does 2.5 and 3.5 in one docking station.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Thermaltake is a solid brand.

Pros: Fast transfer speeds
E-sata
Worked with my old Hitachi Sata I drive (150gbps)
Worked with my Toshiba 2.5" Drive
Attractive design
Well built
LED Power/Activity light is bright but not obtrusive
Comes with USB and E-sata Cable

Cons: Maybe just that it doesn't support USB 3.0 but that is typical

Other Thoughts: I wanted something that could serve two purposes... a dock that would quickly accept and backup/format my laptop drive so I didn't have to worry about slow network transfers or USB stick backup processes when formatting and also something that would accept two old Hitachi 7200RMP Sata 1 drives for backup storage for both my desktop and laptop.

The dock works exactly as advertised. No issues with fitment or compatibility (Win 7 Pro 64).
Would like to have seen something with USB 3.0 maybe (or even Sata 6gbps) but it doesn't really matter since the drives I am using are primarily Sata 1.5gbps drives.

Pros: Ease of set up. plug it in and it works. Reliable operation, I have been using one of these docks for about a year now without a problem. Reliable enough that I have ordered 2 more. They are also more convenient and cheaper than standard external drive enclosures.

Cons: I can't find one for my IDE drives

Other Thoughts: I looked around for inexpensive drive enclosures, but couldn't find any that could beat the Thermaltake BlacX. I am now experimenting by purchasing two more of these docks and running them though a STDSA10G-RK Network Adapter, if this works without the hardware failures I have had in the past with other products, this will become my new standard for NAS.
