good product

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It's a Thermaltake. The quality on this item is very high compared to many of the external drives I've built for myself, and customers in the past.
Both USB 2.0, and eSATA ports for output.
Cooling fan works well. Although slightly loud, it does a good job of keeping a 7200 rpm SATA drive cool.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: For those complaining about the fan, it's a $2 fix if you know where to look. Until my fan gives up completely, I won't be replacing it.
This is the exact same drive as the one selling for $45 here at newegg, other than the color. The more expensive model gets higher reviews. I wonder why that is...

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Works well. All my computers and laptops could recognize it right away.
Cons: Very poorly made. Cheap materials. Poor design as well. It takes a bit of work just to put the side back on (although, this shouldn't be a common occurrence once the hard drive is in there). The fan is loud, but not as unbearable as some would have you believe. The light is WAY over the top and doesn't need to be that huge or bright.

CAUTION: When assembled, this product is VERY top-heavy. See below.
Other Thoughts: The title of Newegg's description for this product is misleading. Says Thermaltake with no mention of Vi-ON. I realize now that it is clearly shown in the picture, but I don't consider this to be a Thermaltake product, even though their logo is on the corner of the box.

Here's an example: I had the assembled hard drive enclosure sitting on top of my desk. Evidently, this thing is very top heavy. I bumped into my desk and this thing fell over like a domino. After propping it back up again I heard a rattling. The USB connector completely snapped off. Fortunately, I plan to use this thing exclusively for it's eSata, but it would've been nice if I could've connected it to my other computers, which will now require an adapter.

If this were REALLY a Thermaltake product, I am convinced that the USB connector would be able to take that kind of punishment. I'm not blaming Newegg that it broke, but I think the word Vi-ON should be in the title so people know what they are gettin

Order A Fan As Well

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I have two of these with 1TB drives in them. The design is great. They works great. Except for the fans! I replace those almost imediately.
Cons: In my opinion, the fan is of poor quality and needs to be replaced immediately!

Shortly after I put this item into service the original fan started making quite a bit of noise. Shortly thereafter I replaced it with an EverCool ball bearing 40mm X 10mm fan.

The fan I purchased was three pin instead of two pin, so I had to make some modifications. First, I removed the old fan. Second, I used a flat blade screwdriver to gently remove the two pin receptacle. Third, I had to switch the red and black leads in the three pin header. I didn't want to work with the polarity switched. If I remember correctly, the red lead goes toward the Hard Drive. Fourth, I mounted the fan and pluged it in. Just need to make sure the right pins are in the right holes!

Works like a charm now. No noise!
Other Thoughts: In my opinion the issues with this device are two fold:
The original fan should have been of higher quality and / or the bottom could have been designed with less flex.

What appears to be happening it that becasue the bottom flex's it allows the fan to be twisted / torqued which in turn causes the noise problem.
