5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Simple to use, easy to set up, does exactly what it says it does.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I use this primarily with the esata port and data transfers are quick and painless. Occasionally I use the USB for connections to a secondary computer and it works great there to. Highly recommend for anyone that transfers data from old to new computers a lot.

2 out of 5 eggsBlacX Duet eSATA Interface

Pros: Seems better constructed than the single drive BlacX.

Cons: Very misleading specs would lead you to believe that one connection (eSATA or USB 2.0) enables both drives. That is true of USB 2.0, but if your motherboard does not support port multiply, the eSATA connection will read only the first of the two drives. This is not in the documentation, specs or advertisement. I discovered it after purchase while searching their site for an explanation as to how to get both drives to work. It was a footnote to their three question FAQ on this unit. So, make sure you're mobo will support port multiply if you want to use the eSATA connection.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace a single drive BlacX unit. Unbelievably, after I decided to get the Duet unit but before I ordered it, the single unit quit working (2 years of use).

1 out of 5 eggsUnpredictable, unreliable

Pros: It's small

Cons: Drives come and go erratically and won't stay spinned up. I returned it. Tried with multiple drives.

3 out of 5 eggsKeeps breaking

Pros: When they work, they work well.

Cons: I've owned going on 3 of these, two of the dual and one of the single. They keep breaking somehow! Either one port will stop working or, now with my current, the SCSI port stops working. Now I am left transferring/backing up TBs of data at USB 2.0 rates. Yikes.

Be aware, you can't pull out one drive even if you eject the other because it will eject the other as well (at least on a Mac).

Other Thoughts: Like I said, when they work, I love them, but currently I am 0/3 on ones that last more then a couple months.

1 out of 5 eggsDock Shows Signs of Defect Within Three Months

Pros: It's as easy to operate as can be expected from such a device.

Cons: The unit shipped to me stopped working within three months of minor use.
Every time I power the unit on, with two drives docked, one of two things happens: 1) The drives disconnect from my computer less than one minute later. 2) Only one of the two drives connects to my computer, and then less than a minute later that one drive disconnects spontaneously. This occurs whether connected via USB or eSATA.

Other Thoughts: I hope the RMA process will revive my confidence in this manufacturer. Thankfully, the warranty period is 3 years long.

3 out of 5 eggsNot as well-made as the single drive version

Pros: Two drives are better than one, right?
generally plug-and-play, no manual driver install needed
Does support at least some >2TB drives.

Cons: disconnects BOTH drives upon removing or inserting a drive.
Tansfer speed is poor

Other Thoughts: The original BlackX was my absolute favorite USB to SATA hard drive dock. It always worked on any system without drives, never disconnected randomly, just a solid product. This one is much less satisfying. The two drive slots seem to work as one unit. If you add or remove a drive, and there's another one present, it will disconnect both drives from Windows. Likewise when you insert a drive or use the "safely remove" option in windows. So you have to keep that in mind. I generally power it off whenever I take out or add a drive, then power back on. Sometimes it's tricky to get the drive to be recognized in Windows at first, but it always works after some on/off troubleshooting. I haven't tested this on OSX or linux but I think it's a hardware problem with the USB to SATA controller in this model.

Contrary to the specs on Newegg, it does recognize my 4TB hard drives with GPT.

Two separate BlackX drives would be better than this Duet thing.

4 out of 5 eggsA few glitches, but OK

Pros: Wicked fast, nicely constructed

Cons: Problems "hot swapping" disks. Annoying "wall wart" power supply.

Other Thoughts: I just got this dock. I am using it with a Mac Pro late 2008 computer in which I have a brand new Tempo SATA Pro 6Gb 4-Port "E4" eSata card. I can't speak to any other configuration.

My major gripe is that if you have one disk in the dock and insert a 2nd disk, the first disk is momentarily unmounted. This means that you have to eject the first disk, and then either insert both at the same time, or, preferably, eject the first disk, turn the dock off, insert both disks and turn it on. This is not really "hot swapping" disks, although you can hot-swap when you are using just one disk.

Other lesser grips are that it comes with a "wall-wart" power supply that takes up 2-3 outlets on a power strip. And sometimes it gets confused and disks won't mount. I'm not sure what is happening then, but unplugging the eSATA cable and replugging it fixes the problem.

I am getting read + write speeds on my backups of up to 400 MB/s, when I have both disks inserted and am backing up from different internal disks (ie, internal disk 1 to external disk 1A, internal disk 2 to external disk 2A). This is about 5x faster than Firewire 800.

Note that this is a USB 2 device. I don't have USB 3 on any of my computers so it doesn't affect me. I haven't tested the USB 2 connection.

Otherwise, it seems sturdily enough built and very convenient. I got this to replace some external docks that couldn't deal with disks over 2 TB. This dock handles 4 TB disks with no problem.
