5 out of 5 eggsThermaltake BlacX 5G USB 3.0

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Just want to clarify the "4 TB" issue with this dock. I have owned 2 of these since 2012 and wanted to be sure that (a) they support 4 TB harad drives, and (b) any 4 TB hard drive which is formatted IN THIS DOCK will not suffer corruption issues when subsequently mounted inside the PC and attached to a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard. I emailed Thermaltake tech support and posed this issue. Their (VERY timely) response was
"On Tue, 17 Jun 2014 13:02:12 -0400, Support - Thermaltake USA wrote: Dear xxxx, ST0019U can read HDD up to 4TB in size and will not cause any data corruption. You can format the drive with the docking station then use the drive as a secondary HDD. The BlacX is mainly used to transfer data only. This has been a reliable dock during the time I have owned it. I also have Rosewill and Ineo USB 3.0 docks, but prefer the Thermaltake docks. Never a dropped connection and fastest overall transfer speeds. I will now be replacing those other docks with additional Thermaltake BlacX 5G, since the other ones do NOT support 4 TB drives (per the respective websites and my personal experience). Hope this helps anyone who is wondering about the 4 TB issue.

Cons: None whatsoever

5 out of 5 eggsGood USB3 Disk Dock

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Works out of the box as intended. Low cost, better construction / operation than competitors for better price point. Comes with everything needed to operate right in box.

Cons: None yet with unit, used on 12 SATA drives to sanitize data before return to recycle plant. Has worked as specified every time.

I question the rubber sleeves sent with the boxed unit, have not seen reason to use as of yet. Nice touch with power button on top where you can easily reach it.

Other Thoughts: If you are having issues with drives not being recognized, check to make sure you are using USB3 rated cables, USB3 connection / port on computer. To resolve vibration issues get a cheap neoprene mouse pad to sit it on, usually find them for a couple of bucks if not free...

If your computer supports "hot swap" drives it will remove read / write delay from SATA and USB connected units Sill a good idea to "eject" the drive before removing from dock.

1 out of 5 eggsThermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black USB 3.0 Docking Station

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: None

Cons: - Unit is very light and cheaply built.
- Does not recognize any of my drives

Other Thoughts: I have owned several Thermaltake docking stations in the past. The BlacX SATA works great for years. I thought the USB 3.0 would be the same quality but i'm extremely disappointed.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Useful Tool

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Easy way to transfer hard drive data.

Cons: Ejector Switch is poor.

Transfers drive vibrations.

Other Thoughts: The BlacX 5G should be in any PC builders toolbox. I was able to quickly and easily plug in half a dozen hard drives ranging from an old 74GB Raptor, to a 2TB WD Black drive. All of them gave me excellent read rates above 100MBs through USB 3, and had no issues. It's a lot easier then cracking a PC case and installing the drives just to test them. The whole process reminds me of inserting a video game cartridge into an N64 or putting a compact flash card in a reader. Just on a larger scale.

There are two design flaws however. First is the design of the ejector button. It simply doesn't work well. That's not a big deal since you can just pull the drive out by hand, but a better design with a less flimsy feeling would have been in order. Second is that the BlacX can carry vibration as a hard drive spins into whatever it's placed on because its "feet" are a really hard rubber. A softer rubber grommet on the bottom would eliminate that vibration.

...also it's a black device, named BlacX, and yet they give a short, bright blue, cable?!?

A couple of tips:

1. If you're running a hard drive in this device long enough to get really hot, place a desk fan near it.

2. Wait at least 30 seconds before removing the drive so that it's had time to spin the platters down.

Overall, a very good product. Fix the flaws and it's five eggs. Until then, only 4.

4 out of 5 eggsOne design flaw, but otherwise it works great!

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Easy to use, cleans up my desktop from cluttered connecters for SATA drives. It sits in a tidy corner till it's needed and I just drop in drives and power it up and it works. I like the dual hdd form-factor too.

Cons: The power-on/hdd-on button is junky at best. Poorly designed toggle-switch, but since I just turn it on and off it isn't that big of a deal.

Other Thoughts: Like the unit overall, it does what I need it to do without having data & power cables laying out on my desk.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Works great, easy set up, no drivers required, reads / writes (USB 2.0) +- 15 MBs average...using as media server: music, photos and videos. No issues with throughput over gigabit wired network.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Connected to Netgear R6300 router via USB 2.0 with a 1TB Seagate HDD SATA II. It's been running 24/7 for about two months, no issues. USB 3.0 has been and continues to be problematic (hardware/drivers/OSs), I've had issues using external HDDs (SATA II & SATA III) with my notebook USB 3.0 ports.
