5 out of 5 eggsConvenient!

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Good speeds. Very convenient.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Bought for work because I have to test hard drives quite often. Don't notice a difference in speed between this device and being hooked up internally.

2 out of 5 eggsOnly 2G drives, Only some USB3

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Looks nice, I like the design of the cabinet and power & eject buttons.
I don't feel like I have to worry about it falling over, or off the top of the tower cabinet.

Cons: None of my 4, HGST 4G drives could be formatted in either Paragon or Windows 7-64b managers, for over 2GB. WinDFT extended tests failed as well as erase.
I tried the Paragon/HGST tool for dealing with drives larger than 2GB but it said it could not find any >2GB drives.
So I turned the BlackX off and put one of the drives in a spare slot of my tower's drive bay and the drive is testing fine.
I tried connecting it to my Lenovo Carbon X1 laptop's USB3 port and first WinDFT failed the same way. I tried ejecting the BlackX and reconnecting it. This time the computer failed to see it. Even after a reboot, the BlackX fails to show up on the computer.
I think I have wasted enough time.

Other Thoughts: Thermaltake says the BlackX works fine for >2G drives but that is not my experience.
I checked their site but the newest firmware is dated 2012 so that doesn't give me much confidence...

4 out of 5 eggsGood stuff, recommended

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Well packaged, sturdy, comes with included cables of reasonable length, steady speeds of about 60-65 MB/s (~480 mbps).

Cons: Lacks eSATA. Hard to tell from looking at this if it isn't the same as every other dock sold by every other company. They all look the same to me, so I take it on faith that it's not just a rebranded generic dock that I could have spent twenty bucks less on by paying for a cheaper name selling essentially the same product.

Other Thoughts: Torn between 4 and 5 eggs. I ended up docking an egg because at this price point I feel the drive really should include eSATA.

Otherwise, if this is what you're looking for, I can recommend it at this point. Speeds are good and transfer rate was very steady without any major up/down fluctuation.

5 out of 5 eggsHelpful tool!

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: For when your old computer fails, you have to pull out the hard drive (that still works), plug it in and salvage the data. This is a very handy tool to have around. Also for those dirty old extra SATA drives lying around, for extra storage. Semi Portable and really easy to use, literally plug in as any other external drive and it is ready to go. You can even hotswap to other HDDs while it's turned on.

Cons: Very fragile. Do not drop in water, step on, or even drop, it will break. Not so much of a problem with me though.

Other Thoughts: Still haven't found USB 3.0 very much useful, that is just my opinion though.

5 out of 5 eggs4 TB Support (response to "Robert B.")

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Supports 4 TB hard drives (I have used WD & Seagate)
No problems swapping internal and dock-based drives
No dropped transfers

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Robert B. - Don't quite understand the problems you had with this dock. I have been using 2 of these for quite a while and often format 4TB drives in the dock, transfer data (large and small files), then install the drives internally. Absolutely no problems. I have experienced higher transfer rates with these docks than with any other manufacturer I have tried (Ineo, Rosewill, IcyDock).

1 out of 5 eggsDoes NOT support 4TB

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Great for drives up to 2TB

Cons: Does not support 4TB+ drives

Other Thoughts: I have 2 5G docks and 6 other Blacx docks so I am/was a fan. I read a previous review with a statement from the mfgr that it does support 4TB drives. This is false. I tested it with a 4TB HGST and 4TB WD Red, neither work. If you power the 5G on and off several times you may be lucky enough to get the Disk Management snap-in to start without hanging which happened for me once in 10 attempts. I managed to get the HGST initialized but then it could no longer be accessed at all, just spun and hung. BTW, this was done with a USB3 connection on a year old computer with the latest firmware and chipset drivers. After wasting 2 hrs with the 5G I dropped the drive into the computer and saw that the partition table was corrupted. After fixing the drive with DiskPart I was able to get it working in the computer in 2 minutes.

I think that Thermaltake is really behind the curve on docks. Poor support and charging a premium price for old tech. Look else ware if you want to dock a 4TB+ drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Izzy9999,
We at Thermaltake apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Tested ST0019U with WD 6TB green drive, no problem found. Please contact our customer service team about this matter.

5 out of 5 eggsSo much better than the 2.0 model

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Excellent xfer rate. Getting consistently 130-140MBps on my Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H system with WD Black HDDs.
I also like that they have the blinking LED in the front while transferring. So much better than my Rosewill USB 2.0 dock!

Cons: Fairly lightweight plastic housing, but who cares? It's not like you're going to be throwing this in a laptop bag and dragging it an airport every week. I'd rather the lightweight and cheaper price point than heavy base and an extra 10 dollars.

Other Thoughts: Great dock, very functional and A++ speed.

5 out of 5 eggsThermaltake BlacX 5G USB 3.0

This review is from: Thermaltake BlacX 5G ST0019U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB 3.0 Docking Station

Pros: Just want to clarify the "4 TB" issue with this dock. I have owned 2 of these since 2012 and wanted to be sure that (a) they support 4 TB harad drives, and (b) any 4 TB hard drive which is formatted IN THIS DOCK will not suffer corruption issues when subsequently mounted inside the PC and attached to a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard. I emailed Thermaltake tech support and posed this issue. Their (VERY timely) response was
"On Tue, 17 Jun 2014 13:02:12 -0400, Support - Thermaltake USA wrote: Dear xxxx, ST0019U can read HDD up to 4TB in size and will not cause any data corruption. You can format the drive with the docking station then use the drive as a secondary HDD. The BlacX is mainly used to transfer data only. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thermaltake USA Customer Service 1-800-988-1088 M-F 9:00AM ~ 5:30PM (P.S.T)"
This has been a reliable dock during the time I have owned it. I also have Rosewill and Ineo USB 3.0 docks, but prefer the Thermaltake docks. Never a dropped connection and fastest overall transfer speeds. I will now be replacing those other docks with additional Thermaltake BlacX 5G, since the other ones do NOT support 4 TB drives (per the respective websites and my personal experience). Hope this helps anyone who is wondering about the 4 TB issue.

Cons: None whatsoever
