5 out of 5 eggsThermaltake, inexpensive and GOOD!

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: This is one reliable PSU, backwards compatible with older systems, those PSU not capable of running Haswell properly. By this I mean, my PC P&C Silencer 750 made a hissing sound when I put it in my new Haswell system but the Thermaltake which was meant for the old system that the Silencer was powering ran it w/o a problem while the Silencer was not compatible with Haswell.
I completely forgot about the ATX12V revisions. So, the Thermaltake has been very reliable now for almost 4 weeks in a row, powering a C2Q Q6600, 4GB DDR2, 1x 600GB HDD, optical drive, Audigy Gamer, USB 3.0 PCIex1 card and a power hungry 9800 GTX slightly overclocked (from BFG).

I've used the TR2 Thermaltake for my back up systems since the 430W and have never had an issues with them, so I highly recommend them for those systems that you just don't want to get rid of them yet. Although for high-end or new hardware, I always tend to go with those with superb reviews, reviews where they've been tested massively.

Even though this says SLI and CXF ready, it is but for cards not requiring two power connectors each. My 9800 GTX pretty much took the two available PCI-Ex power connectors.

I'm really not a big fan of dual or multi x12V rails, but in this case the price and brand from previous experience decided my choice of PSU.

Cons: None so far

5 out of 5 eggsbarely worked

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: Good RMA by Theramltake- faulty PS was replaced at no cost and shipping was paid by theramaltake process was painless and fast

Nice to see a company stand by there product

The replacement is on year 2+ and rock solid.

Cons: First one worked fine in my dads computer for a month. then he added a 6770 video card and random system shutdowns and failures to start occurred. Troubleshooting revealed PS was bad. Thermaltake replaced it with no problems, see pros

Other Thoughts: would buy again due to good customer support and the second one is excellent i guess i just got the one that slipped thru the crack

3 out of 5 eggsCoil Whine

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: I've had this power supply for about 4 years now, has worked perfectly fine the whole time.

Cons: After about 4 years of constant use. (Leaving computer on over night. Constant gaming every day) He has started to have a coil whine and started over heating on me.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,
We at Thermaltake apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
We can replace your power supply through our warranty service.

2 out of 5 eggsHave had 3 of 5 go bad

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: Okay cable lengths... 500W they say, 5 year warranty. Fairly cheap supply. Quiet fan.

Cons: Cables not covered, just bare wires. Doesn't hold up under constant use. NOT 80+ rated and no PFC...

Other Thoughts: It needs a 5 year warranty because it breaks so often under constant use. I would not put more than a 300W constant load on these PSU's if you want them to last.

Have had 3 RMA'ed so far and now maybe 4th (out of 5 purchased) needs RMA. They fail under a constant 370W load used in a CPU/GPU farm setup.

Says it's SLI and Crossfire ready, but there is only ONE PCIe connector setup - a 6+2 with a short spice to 6 pin PCIE... don't think you could plug in two 6-pin video cards and run them well.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Armand,

We at Thermaltake are sorry you are seeing issues with your PSU application.
We would be more than happy to discuss your application and review how we can best assist you based upon your needs.

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: Bought this because it was a brand name and on sale. Works fine but just feels and looks kind of low endish

Cons: Like my Raidmax, EVGA better.

5 out of 5 eggs500W of electricity

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: Install was easy. powered on right away! Had all the connectors I needed

Cons: Some of the wires leaving the power supply box were entangled with the other wires making it more difficult to separate and properly manage the cables.

4 out of 5 eggsdoes the job

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: Need this for a budget build for parents. Didn't need anything to fancy. Just need enough juice to power an A10 apu, single stick of ram, a 500gb drive, dvd drive and a couple of fans. Parents don't live near me and they are never opening the pc up so no need to ever worry about upgrades. I know once the system was built that would be it.

Cons: Now a day's I feel all psu's should at least be 80 plus rated. Also wouldn't recommend this for a beefy gpu. While it does have 2 PCI-Express Connectors this psu can't deliver 500w over the 12v rail which is the primary source of power for you cpu/gpu. You actually get 420w max. But you'll likely not be able to sustain that level do poor efficiency, hence my comment about being certified.

Other Thoughts: Be realistic about you power needs and this psu will serve you well. If you have a 100w or high cpu then i wouldn't go to crazy with a power hungry graphics card. Aside from that for budget builds this will do. I recommend but its depends on your power needs. I would imagine people buying a gpu that recommends a 500w power supply having failures with this. Suggest best for systems where normal usage rarely exceeds 400w.

1 out of 5 eggsBest Stay away from this one

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: It worked when I installed it

Cons: Just about a year ago I did a build of 10 nodes for a render farm. The first power supply dies about 6 months in, and I have had 4 more die.
No smoke or anything - the board gets power but the unit will not come out of standby. So far a 50% failure rate.
Don't buy this unit.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,
We apologize about the various issues you have experienced. Thermaltake, as with any product, does have products which fail on rare occasion, but a 50% failure is highly unusual. Please contact Customer Service and we can replace the defective PSUs. We would also love the opportunity to see what underlying issue is as well.

2 out of 5 eggsNot impressed

This review is from: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

Pros: Cost was decent enough and it had the Thermaltake name to it.

Cons: Dead on Arrival. Straight out the box. Attempted to use a tester on the PSU. It will blip for a few miliseconds when I provide power and then shut off. When I say blip I am talking everything too. Hard drivers, fans, everything.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,
We apologize about any inconvenience the DOA PSU may have caused. Please contact Customer Service and we can have the PSU replaced through warranty service.
