5 out of 5 eggsIt fits the bill.

Pros: Everything needed to build your own external hard drive is included -- except for the hard drive itself, of course. The hard drive is a snug fit, but I had no trouble fitting it in there. The fan is so quiet that I can barely hear it running. The USB cable is 3'8.5" (1.14M) long. The red power lamp doubles as a reading/writing indicator. The stand is very good quality and fits well.

Cons: The gray rubber pieces that cover the case screws are cheap and the tabs on them are easily broken. One of mine did. That's not a big deal for me though. The rubber pieces are blue in the picture at Newegg but, mine are gray. Again, not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I am very pleased with this case. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: This enclosure will takes an IDE drive. If you want an enclosure for a SATA drive, try this one: New Egg Item N82E16817362002

The first problem is getting the enclosure open to install the hard drive. The manual is in PDF format on the CD-ROM, but you’ll need read it from the disk in order to understand how you are supposed to install the drive.

I used this enclosure for a Seagate 75 GB hard drive that had been internal. My computer would no longer recognize it attached to the on-board IDE cable, but it works fine through the USB bus. Go figure.

There is no activity light, but the power indicator light on my unit flickers a bit when the disk is writing. I don’t find it objectionably bright, nor too dim.

Cons: This unit sits on top of my computer case (Antec Sonata) which is under my desk beside me. The external drive is inaudible over the sound of the computer’s (quiet) processor fan. When I turn the computer off and leave the external hard drive powered, I can hear it, but it is not loud.

Windows XP will not boot from a USB hard drive. My computer won’t boot at all if the external drive is turned on while the computer boots. You can leave the drive hooked up all the time and turn it on anytime after Windows starts to boot, even after the computer has been running for hours.

I haven’t used the enclosed imaging software, but from the documentation it appears to be a variant of Acronis True Image, which I use and like. It allows you to image drives or individual folders and files. It will also allow you to “mount” an image to access the files as if they were on a disk in the computer. Very nice.

Other Thoughts: The synchronizing software, Second Copy 2000, is a supposedly a trial version that expires after 30 days. It doesn’t. Mine has been running fine for at least two months. It creates a constant backup of whatever folders and files you set up, synchronizing the external files with your on-board files as frequently as every few minutes (user selectable).

It’s a fair price for an excellent enclosure. You should buy it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat enclosure

Pros: Excellent quality. Solid, durable, pleasant brushed aluminum finish. Fan is barely audible. Fast/simple drive installation. Front-mount push-button on/off. Brick not too large, has power-on light.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Bought my first a yr ago, has worked flawlessly. Bought a second after researching again and finding this is still the best. Very well made.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice case!

Pros: Very nice external case, easy to figure out, had it up and running with a Seagate 500 gig drive in just a few minutes. I like that the on/off switch is front-mounted. So far, using this as a "jukebox" drive, and for being USB, it's functioning great on every machine I've hooked it to, from a beige G3 running OS 8.6 to an MDD dual 1-gig, to a Powerbook G4.

Cons: Only wish that it had Firewire ports as well...but Apricorn seems to have abandoned that model, unfortunately. The external power supply would probably get cumbersome if I had to move it around a lot, but for sitting on the desktop and just doing its job, it's unobtrusive.

Other Thoughts: I appreciate things that are designed well, and this case is designed well. Stylish, solid, and so far very dependable.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality Product

Pros: Both hardware and software worked right out of the box with no snags at all. The case opened easily and I was able to install a HD with no problems. Windows XP SP2 immediately recognized the harware and I had no problem intializing the drive. The software installed perfectly and I had a clone of my system drive in less than 45 minutes.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: For the price, I got a superbly designed and constructed USB HD enclosure and at least an equivalent value in software. What's not to love about that.

5 out of 5 eggsTrouble Free

Pros: Regarding Paps whose fan made noise and failed after 50 hours, I would say the noise was not normal, but rather the beginning of the fan's failure.

Been running my Apricorn off-and-on for two months, and the gentle fan has always been close to silent. Hardly notice much air flow; sounds like Pap's fan had an overvoltage on it, was running extra-fast until it burned out.

Paired my Apricorn with a 500 GB Western Digital drive, Item#: N82E16822136111

It's a smooth running pair. If you stick your ear within 6 inches of the box, you can hear the light whirring of the delicate fan, which blows on the open pc-board side of the installed drive. While transferring files, the drive makes soft clicks, and the bright red Power-ON LED blinks a little brighter.

Cons: I had to re-assemble the case a few times until I got it right. It doesn't take much IQ, but just a little trial and error because instructions are lacking. Well, after I got it put together, I found a useful diagram on Apricorns website.

Lots of people complaining about putting the case together, but everyone has been able to do it. Actually simple.

Then, I had to take it apart again, because I couldn’t find a way to format the USB-connected drive while inside its box. I had to temporarily replace my internal IDE Slave drive with the new drive, and go into My Computer (right click) > Manage > Disk Management to make four 116 GB partitions and format them.

XP does weird formatting; it would only allow me to make four partitions. It was sufficient.

Other Thoughts: Dell XPS-T450 from 1999 upgraded to 1.4 GHz Celeron with massive 256 kB L2 cache, and a USB 2.0 card. It takes my computer 7 mins 45 secs to Cut-and-Paste 4.37 GB of DVD files off of my internal drive (WD1600JB) and onto the USB contraption. I calculate almost 10 MB/sec.

3 out of 5 eggsFan is powerful but didn't last

Pros: Big fan, easy to set up, power button on front, solidly built.

Cons: Fan produces an audible hum but keeps the hard drive very cool. Fan stopped working after about 50 total hours of use.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this enclosure about 6 months ago and installed a 500gb hard drive. It was very easy to set up. I have a different external enclosure I also purchased from Newegg which has a quieter fan but this Apricorn pushes more air through the vents. The build quality seems much better on this Apricorn. One big advantage on this enclosure is that the drive is actually mounted to the aluminum case, which takes advantage of the cooling quality of the aluminum. The other brand uses an internal plastic tray so the drive never touches the aluminum case. The button on the front is also very easy to use. The only problem I've had so far is with the fan. Out of the box, it produced a slight hum but I expected it for the amount of air it moves through the case. Unfortunately, one day I turned it on and it started making a loud rattling sound and then stopped working after a few minutes. Hopefully this is an isolated problem.

5 out of 5 eggsChinese Puzzle Box

Pros: Super quiet, keeps drive cool. Fan centered above the drive electronics, best place for it IMHO.

Cons: Large aluminum stand, some might like it, but not so great in a laptop bag. I leave it at work. The cooling vents are exposed just fine without the stand.

Other Thoughts: How to get it apart (no doc on this). 1) lay it down flat on its four feet (without the stand), pull the top half out straight up, clam-shell-like but straight. 2) the four rubber inserts on each side of the case are designed with one short and one long protuberance each. I think you are supposed to pull out only the short one. If you pull out the long one it is harder to get it to go back in (a small screwdriver will do it). How to align the screw holes: The cables act like springs, pushing the drive to one end, the drive holes are exposed even like this (Apricorn designed it well). Bend the cables to reduce this effect, and hold the case with the front end up to cause the weight of the drive to overcome it. Once you get one or two screws in loosly, you can center the drive, tighten one, and the rest will go in easy.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Piece of gear

Pros: Great looks. Solid contruction. Easy drive installation. Pretty quiet fan. Front panel on/off. Solid aluminum case, not just aluminum sheets over plastic.

Cons: 5 to 10 minutes to swap a drive. Different models to support USB versus Sata versus Firewire

Other Thoughts: Using with Dish 622 receiver with Seagate 500GB IDE drive. Silver is good match for 622. Quick Delivery from NewEgg. Now let's see if the rebate actually comes ;-)
