The EZ-UP-Universal kit from Apricorn lets you upgrade your notebook's SATA or PATA hard drive then use the old drive as an external storage device in three easy steps. Or if you already have an extra 2.5" drive just install it in the case and go. Either way you now have convenient external storage device.

The EZ Gig II software can create a clone of your drive for disaster recovery or upgrade purposes. Or you use it to make periodic backups of your system. Whichever you choose you can password protect the files and make comments for easy identification.

Pros: It's very easy to use and it actually works. It's small, not much bigger than a deck of cards.

Cons: The FAQ provides very little information and customer service is fairly useless.

Other Thoughts: I had to use usb 1.1, I wasn't in a hurry so that wasn't a problem. The green LED flashed for about two hours and the screen went black. The screen finally came back and the LED went steady green. There was no progress bar so I had no idea if it was even working. Left it on overnight, LED still steady green, still no progress bar in the morning, turned everything off and installed the new hard drive to see if it had worked, it did and everything is good.

Flawless hard drive exchange

Comments: The EZ upgrade worked flawlessly! I used it to upgrade from a 9 gB to 60 gB drive in a Sony VAIO laptop. My only challenge was getting Win 2000 to find the unformatted drive on the USB. Using Disk Management (under the Control Panel) was the key - lucky I had a smart friend. Now I can use the enclosure with the old drive and have an external USB drive - this is very good.

Pros: Easy to use. Cloned hard drive quickly and correctly. Has a solid feel to it. Instructions were easy to follow.

Cons: None so far.

Needs POWER ADAPTER!!

Pros: Very nice solid blue case. Came with USB cable. Nice packaging.

Cons: Does not power on EIDE HDDs!! My HDD is only running at 5400 RPM!
I had to buy the power adapter separately from Radio Shack for !!36 bucks!! since it did not come with it!! The enclosure will not power give a EIDE HDD enough juice to run, even though they say it will work.

Other Thoughts: Once you buy the separate adapter the device works nicely. I just wish they sent the adapter with the item since people will obviously need it!

Simple And Easy

Pros: Very well built enclosure. Simple installation. The bundled cloning software works great on my Windows XP system partition, I was up and running on my new hard drive upgrade in less than one hour! I am amazed at how east this was.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If K.I.S.S. is your modus operandi, then you will really appreciate this drive enclosure. I bought it because it was bundled with a laptop hard drive offer, and that was fantastic. But I would buy this just for the enclosure.
