Question 1

How/why does this connect to the motherboard.  I am looking just to pug the PC into the device?  What am I missing?

The power supply mounts inside the computer case, on the other side of the power supply is a wiring harness full of connectors that plug into the motherboard and other internal devices.  When you remove the old power supply keep note of where the current connectors were plugged in at.

You should also check the wattage on the current power supply you want to make sure you get at least the same wattage if not more.  More wattage is better it will no overload the system and will put less strain on the power supply.

If this is your first power supply replacement be sure to read up or search for a youtube video on replacing as you don't want to fry your PC by connecting up incorrectly.
