An important tip from one of our users: don't just check total power output, find out what you need in the way of current on each power rail. If you need 20 A on your +12V rails and the supply only has 15A, it doesn't matter how many watts the supply puts out: don't buy it. Make certain that you have ENOUGH rails, too: sometimes, you need more than just two +12V rails for your setup.

Replacing an existing power supply is easier: just get a replacement that meets or exceeds the specifications of the old one. (You can usually find those printed on the side of the supply.)

That said, here's a power supply that is compatible with most ATX format motherboards, puts out 575 watts of power (see specifications for exact distribution) at a great price. Could this be your next power supply?

1 out of 5 eggsPass on this one

Pros: Cheap

Cons: "Worked" for 4 months with intermittent shutdowns. Died around 4 months after installing.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for this wattage, in this price range, go with HEC.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap price, cheap performance

Pros: It powers my sons computer but I had to make optimizations (see cons).

Cons: I got this for my sons x-mas computer, I had everything setup and thought he was good to go, however, as soon as he started gaming or even watching youtube his computer would shutdown (but stay on). There would be a burst of fan speed for about a second, screen would go black, then the computer would be un-usable until restarted via power button. Long->Short, it was the PSU, the GPU used 2 x 6 pin connectors and any kind of power usage and the system would go black. I put the card in my PC, worked fine, took my card out gtx 750 (no pcie power connections needed) and viola, his system works, so even though I had asked for an RMA which I did get from Newegg (thanks), I ended up not using it and just kept the PSU and my son uses my GPU and I use his older 2 x 6 pin for now and I'll just upgrade that later. he has had no issues since.

Other Thoughts: Sticking with this PSU could possibly bite me in the future, I've never had one fail out of the box on any of its connections before, they either 100% work or don't from my previous 8 PSU's. My son is happy though as his GPU is upgraded from what it used to be and his PSU is working so far (not the pcie connections though).

2 out of 5 eggsway too loud

Pros: Price, 2 x pcie connectors

Cons: This power supply is unbelievably loud. I bought three of them and they are all this way. I have 1 in a gaming computer with 4 x 120mm case fans and all I can hear is the power supply

5 out of 5 eggsVery Quiet and Well Built

Pros: Minimal noise, aesthetics, fitment, price.

Cons: The plugin feels a little funny, as if it isn't going in all the way.

Other Thoughts: Excellent PSU for price, and plenty of power for third gen i7 builds.

5 out of 5 eggsLogisys Power Supply

Pros: Works fine, cheap, had all the connector I needed, doesn't look too bad.

Cons: Was unsure about it for a while.

Other Thoughts: My sons expensive name brand power supply went out, it filled up with dust and over heated I'm guessing. I was really tight on money and I used a logisys before that came in a case I bought and didn't have any trouble. So being very short on cash I bought this power supply because at the time it had the highest amperage on a single rail for the price. It was still working when I pulled it out to replace with something better. It's been running a lot of hours everyday for 1 year and 9 months. It was running a old nForce 4 sli mobo with a opty 165 and one 9800gt, single hard drive. Pretty basic system but it was more than decent back in 2006 when I built it. It worked out good for me and what I needed it for. I wouldn't use it for newer systems with higher wattage processors and big video cards or multiple vid cards. If you don't have nothing crazy for a system and are in a super tight financial bind like I was give it try.
