4 out of 5 eggsGrinding noise after 3+yeas. Replaced cooling fan

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: Read my review erlier

Cons: Grinding noise after 3+yeas.
Cooling fan installed face down, so weight of the fan and magnets was holding by plastic clip- clip was broke in half.
Cooler Master should request fan manufacturer to install batter holding clip. Metal clip will cost no more then extra dollar to produce and install. This is $200 unit!

Other Thoughts: SPU under warranty, but I cant afford downtime- this is my everyday machine.
I replace fan with: EVERCOOL 13525M12S ND1 135mm Power Supply Replacement Fan.
Now no issues.
Old fan still working good in vertical position.

5 out of 5 eggsRock solid

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: I have this powering a EVGA SR-2 with two Intel Xeon W5590 CPU's, 48 gigs of RAM, 5 hardrives, 1 EVGA 690GTX, 1 optical drive, 1 water pump and 10 fans. I'm going on over 2 and a half years now without a burp. What more can be said.

Cons: Zip, nada, nix, none.

Other Thoughts: I got this for a bargain back in the day for 189.00. It's 149 now. You gotta be kidding me!

3 out of 5 eggsNo problems until...

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: Worked great with no problems.

Cons: As soon as 2 years passed, the warranty period, it died.

Other Thoughts: I really can't complain too much for getting an excellent two years of work out of this power supply, but it is annoying to have it break just as soon as its out of the warranty period. I would have expected a power supply with this quality to last a bit longer.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate on RMA

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: - Very Quiet
- System runs very stable (the best reason to buy a quality PSU)
- Excellent Support from Cooler Master

Cons: - Now shuts off intermittently
- Now overheating

Other Thoughts: This PSU worked great for 2.5 years and 4 weeks ago it suddenly shutdown. I immediately opened the system and the PSU was very hot to the touch. It barely became warm before. After a few minutes it came back on. For the last month it ran each time I turned it on only to shut down after 10-20 minutes.

It's unfortunate that my Silent Pro Gold 1200w PSU died, but even when using the best components there will be some failures. I did all I could to prevent stress on the PSU. I ran it at around 50% of it's capacity at most. It was always plugged into a very high quality UPS so it always had very clean reliable power.

After filling out an RMA form of their website I contacted Cooler Master via their Online Chat and was pleasantly greeted by a very helpful representative. I was able to provide a credit card to initiate a cross-shipped replacement so I could have a somewhat running PC until the replacement arrived. Cooler Master had some issues finding a replacement for this discontinued unit. This flagship PSU from CM has been replaced by the new Cooler Master V1200 Platinum. Cooler Master upgraded my RMA to a brand new V1200 at no cost to me even though I had offered to pay the difference for the upgrade.
It took a little longer to get the new unit since it had to come from outside the support department, but it was worth the wait. The new V1200 platinum is completely modular and so far what I have seen is pure, rock solid power. I ran my new PC through a stress test (pulling up to 700 watts) and my voltages did not fluctuate at all. I was measuring to the 1/100th of a volt and there were no deviations.

The V1200 Platinum is about 94% efficient at the power level I am using it (700 watts) and therefore generates very little heat. I've heard some complain that it has smaller heat sinks than the Silent Pro Gold 1200w, but they must not understand that when your design is more efficient you are generating much less heat and do not need large heat sinks. My V1200 barely gets warm and the fan barely seems to turn on. It is very quiet.

The new unit is made with top of the line components and has a 7-year warranty.

I am very pleased with the support from Cooler Master. Everyone I spoke with there was incredibly nice and very helpful. You could not ask for better service.

Thank you Cooler Master.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat power supply! 8 month owner

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: I have owned it for 8 months now and it has been great to me! My motherboard still shows that its 12V rail, 5.5V rail, and 3.3V rails have continued to put out the exact same voltage since I bought it.

Fully modular, 80+ gold rated, it really is silent, never feels warm to the touch even when drawing 100% full system load for a while (900watt ish). And it doesn't feel like a cheapo plastic case power supply!

Cons: Could have been a bit cheaper, I payed $220, but I'm hoping that it is well designed and will last much longer than other cheaper PSUs.

Other Thoughts: Great efficiency is important when you're drawing a lot of power, for the first 5 months I used this in a crypto currency mining computer, and i would like to believe it saved a bit of power!

4 out of 5 eggsWorked great for 2 1/2 years

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: - Very Quiet
- System runs very stable (the best reason to buy a quality PSU)

Cons: - Now shuts off intermittently
- Now overheating

Other Thoughts: This PSU worked great for 2.5 years and yesterday it suddenly shutdown. I immediately opened the system and the PSU was hot to the touch. I don't recall it ever getting more than barely warm before. After a few minutes it came back on only to shut down after 5-10 minutes.

The system is quite basic and certainly not putting any heavy load on this beast.
- Intel I7 CPU with 8GB RAM
- One NVIDIA GTX-260 Core 216
- Cooler Master 240L CPU Cooler
- Samsung SSD
- Four Western Digital Hard Drives (3 Green, One Black)
- LG CD/DVD Burner
- Cooler Master CM Storm Case

I've built at least a hundred PC's for friends and family over the last 25 years, including a lot of Cooler Master Products. This is the first one to my knowledge that has failed.

Now we will see just how good the Cooler Master Warranty is. They will hopefully cross-ship a replacement so I don't have to be without my PC. I don't mind giving a CC as a guarantee. Right now I am at least able to get my critical work done working in short spurts.

I will report back on how the warranty support goes.

1 out of 5 eggsCooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200W

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: it was quite while working

Cons: The first one of these I had lasted about 8 months. I bought another to replace that one and it lasted 3 months. The last one failed while the computer was off and just keeping the motherboard going since the computer was not in use for a week as I was on travel. When I got home and tried to fire up the computer it was dead.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We sincerely apologize for the trouble you had with the power supply. This is definitely not normal and we can help make this right by replacing the unit or even exchanging it. Would you be able to contact so we can rectify the situation to your satisfaction?

2 out of 5 eggsBeware blown after 3 months

This review is from: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold - 1200W Power Supply with 80 PLUS Gold Certification and Semi-Modular Cables

Pros: Now I know it's cheap!

Cons: Failed after 3 months under light load, near or under 50%, a capacitor exploded inside at night.
Sent back to Cooler Master for RMA, they are painfully slow, the status of my RMA is "testing" for more than 2 weeks now!

Other Thoughts: How hard is it supposed to be, to test a blow power supply. I did it, computer was working at night, loud pop at night, computer isn't working anymore... plug another power supply, the computer is working.. plug the defective one, computer isn't working. Not rocket science! Two weeks! Seriously!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Novacrash,

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Would you be able to contact us so we can follow up with you and find out what the cause of the delay is? We would like to rectify the situation.

Respectfully,

Marvin R.
