3 out of 5 eggsunstable power on overclock

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Heavy, efficient, tons of wires. Very quite and able to power a i5 at 4.5Ghz, mulitple ssd's, a blue ray player, 16GB ram, and a R9280x

Cons: At high overclocks on my CPU, the power supply to my graphics card would fluctuate wildly. Though i have no voltmeter, the GPU (at stock conditions) would constantly reach 100% fan load and idle at about 60%. when I dropped my overclock on the CPU, the GPU never again went above 80%. This, combined with constant bluescreens during voltage spikes (ie idle to stress and back again) makes this an unreliable choice for "higher level" overclocking.
Also, there are tons of cords attached to this non-modular unit, about 3 of which I never use. Next model will definitely be modular/semi-modular.

Other Thoughts: Very good operation under basic conditions. just doesn't pack the punch needed for "hardcore".

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: I have had this PSU for almost a year now. I used to think Rosewill was entry level junk, but this PSU is fantastic. All the power I need for a crossfire X setup, 3 hard drives, and more fans than I care to admit. Even through dirty power situations (brown outs and black outs that occur relatively often in my area) this PSU has survived.

Cons: Not modular, but I knew that when I bought it.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: -Great continuous power
-Energy efficient
-Sleek design

Cons: -Not modular

Other Thoughts: Not being modular would not be an issue, although the cords are stiff so tough to work with when managing wiring in the cased, if this was not the case would have been 5 eggs from me

5 out of 5 eggsRosewill Fortress 650W Single Rail Platinum Certified

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: I am old school about PSUs. I normally would buy name brand, Antec, Cooler Master, or Corsair items because i try to reduce the margin for error in my PC builds. Now Rosewill a few years ago I would of considered a GENERIC brand. They have proven me otherwise with their Cases *which i bought a Challenger case along with this PSU, which i love*, their peripherals, and now their PSUs. I had a Thermaltake dual rail PSU TR2 600, it powered my new Haswell build up but i got blue screens from returning to sleep in sometimes in boot and during high loads in games. Now my ATI 7950 was pulling real power, and my previous Thermaltake couldn't handle it. Not to mention the new Haswell low power sleep modes, it coudln't handle booting back into Windows from sleep mode. Not to mention i just dropped 500 on a MB and CPU about a month ago, and to get blue screens on your brand new setup i was not happy.

After using my new Rosewill Challenger tower to put this Fortress 650 in, i put my Astek Fatal1ty and 4670k into it. Along with my kingston 128gb SSD and 2 TB Seagate with my samsung SATA DVD writer. I was worried again about my MSI 7950 pulling too much power. Everything booted up perfectly. No blue screens, can return from sleep fine now. Couldn't be happier with this PS. Most gamers have these wacky ideas they need 800w - 1000w PSU for their setups, if u boil it down to the math its just not the case. I got lucky and paid 90 bucks for this unit, and I couldn't be happier!
Thank you Rosewill, you have a loyal customer!

I'm running
5 x 120mm fans 1 x 240mm
MSI 7950 Radeon BOOST
Cooler Master TX3 CPU COOLER
4670k Haswell on Astek Fatal1ty Killer MB
8gb Gskill Sniper pc1866
128 GB Kingston Hyper X SSD
2 TB 7200 RPM Seagate SATA HDD
Samsung DVDWRITER SATA
Vantec GPU cooler 2x 80mm PCI Slot fan
Azio Mech5 Mechanical Keyboard
Planar 27" 2ms Secondary Monitor
Asus 144hz 24" Gaming Monitor
Corasair Aluminum Gaming Mouse Pad
Corsair m65 8200DPI Gaming Mouse
Soundblaster XiFI HD USB Soundcard
5.1 THX Altec Lansing Speakers
IT POWERS ALL OF THIS WITHOUT SKIPPING A BEAT

Cons: Not Modular, I knew that when purchasing, big deal!

Other Thoughts: If you don't understand PSUs u should really research this stuff before dropping the money it takes to get a real PSU. Lemme tell u though, if u have a moderate power pulling Haswell setup like mine, this is the PERFECT PSU. Platinum certified too? COME ON!

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, couldn't be happier

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: Unless you've got a really over-the-top build planned, this is all the power supply you'll ever need. It is built using top-notch internal components, and as a testament to that you can actually pull slightly more more than the rated 650W from it in the real world. I'm running an overclocked i5-3570K with two AMD Radeon 7970 graphics cards in Crossfire mode on this power supply. I use my video cards to mine Bitcoin/Litecoin when I'm not using them for anything graphics intensive, and with the CPU and GPU's running flat-out, I only draw about 600W from the wall based on my Kill-a-Watt meter readings. (When I overclock the video cards I've actually exceeded 650W a few times, and the PSU didn't skip a beat. There is more than enough headroom in this unit for a very high-end build.

The cables are nice and sheathed, I didn't have any problems with cable length in my Fractal Define R3 mid-tower case.

The fan in the power supply is quiet.

The four PCI-e leads all have 8-pin capability.

up to 94% efficiency (80 plus platinum).

Crazy (awesome) 7 year warranty.

Cons: When it's running near its rated load potential, the unit gets pretty hot... perhaps a side-effect of the quiet and conservative fan.

Other Thoughts: This PSU has survived several rounds of annoying brown-outs and power outages in my area. I would buy it again.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty darn spiffy

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: 80 plus platinum, good price, lots of cables

Cons: Cables are kind of stiff. The power cable doesn't like to stay in, I had to wrap some electrical tape around it to beef it up because it's not worth taking apart my computer to return it.

4 out of 5 eggsFortress 650W

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: - Platinum Rated
- Plenty of Cables and Plugs
- Quiet and Decent Looking

Cons: - Not Modular
- Stiff Wires
- Plenty of Cables and Plugs

Other Thoughts: I purchased this power supply because it was platinum rated and would give me plenty of headroom in my system. Both of these things, it does fine. The only drawbacks to this power supply are that it is not modular, and the wires are rather thick and stiff. Trying to find a place to stash all the wires in my NZXT Source 220 was rather difficult. I also found it difficult to route the main power wires for my motherboard and graphics card without putting too much stress on their connectors.

Overall, this is a solid power supply with good connectivity and only some minor flaws in the way of ease of cable management. I would recommend this power supply.

5 out of 5 eggssmall correction

This review is from: Rosewill FORTRESS-650 650W Continuous @50°C, Intel Haswell Ready, 80 PLUS PLATINUM, ATX12V v2.31 & EPS12V v2.92, SLI/CrossFire Ready, Active PFC Power Supply

Pros: errata in my earlier review. This DOES have OCP. My bad. Also, for the sake of accuracy, I have the 550W Fortress, not the 650W. NewEgg removed the 550W model listing recently.

Cons: Apologies for the inadvertent bump. (newbie at posting)
