5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for me as an NAS

Pros: I got an ASUS router with a USB plug, so I thought I'd try this enclosure out as an NAS. Works great for me. I like the 'jumbo' option. I put 2 1TB drives in it, flipped the jumbo switch, and it looks like a 2TB drive. The enclosure is well made and easy to load with 3.5" drives. I store movies and TV shows on this network-attached drive and am able to share and access this drive from every device on my network. It's seamless and has been up and running 24/7 with no problems for 6-7 months.

Cons: It's only USB 2.0, but the router is only 2.0 as well, so I'm not really losing anything with this application.

Other Thoughts: I'm going to get another one and use it for the same thing.

4 out of 5 eggsJDOB oddities.

Pros: I like these a lot, I took some tape and covered the lights so I could sleep at night instead of trying to count bytes. the fan on off switch is a nice touch.

Cons: The fans do not switch off when i PC puts the drive in power saving mode. and if you use JDOB, do not take the drives out of the R2 later. even if you take both drives out and put them into the same computer. Windows will not see the JDOB, nor will it see the two drives as having partition at all, you will be asked to format them. but as long as you don't screw with them you can just pop them back into the R2 and all should be well.

Other Thoughts: smarter power features would be nice, allow windows to fully power the device down when not in use.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall Good Purchase

Pros: Simple setup and use. Worked perfectly for almost 3 years.

Cons: Would like to see them updated with usb 3.0.

My power supply died after 3 years.

Other Thoughts: Used with both a PC and with an Asus 66u router as a media server. virtually no setup is required. Will probably upgrade to their 4 slot version at some point.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure for the Price

Pros: The enclosure runs very cool with the fan on and two Western Digital Red HDDs.
The fan is very quiet, and is barely audible.

The case, when in JBOD mode shows both HDDs individually.
The JBOD/Big mode switch is on the inside of the enclosure, but is very easy to access once the rear four screws are taken out.

The design is very solid and there are no loose or rattling parts internally or externally; probably one of the best external enclosures I've seen in terms of quality.
When the fan is off, the unit will get warm when both drives are running and active, but if the drives are set to spin down, then the enclosure will get no hotter than room temperature and is totally silent.

The outside has a brushed-metal look to it, and the plastic stand has a good, solid fit.

Cons: The JBOD/Big mode switch is internal, but this is only a minor inconvenience at most. The maximum supported drive capacity (per bay) is 2TB, which is beginning to show it's age, especially with 3-6TB HDDs available now.

Other Thoughts: This works great in JBOD-mode with an ODROID-U3, Debian Linux, and MDADM RAID1.
I have yet to see any issue at all with the enclosure, and the activity lights on the front are very neat.

4 out of 5 eggsStill going

Pros: I was looking at past orders and found I had purchased mine in 2009! It's still going strong. I leave the fan on and it runs most days, all day, without needing to replace the fan, but it does need to be opened up and cleaned every couple months (says more about my house than the device, though).

Great if your primary computer is a Mac laptop because you get to use two drives with one plug!

Cons: Only supports up to 2TB, which is feeling tight now. Copying from one internal drive to the other can feel slow (limited by one USB connection).

2 out of 5 eggsSeemed to be a great deal

Pros: Allowed me to use two(2 old 500 GB hard drives, as a 1 TB back-up drive.

Cons: The unit constantly disappears from Windows 8.1. I have to constantly turn the unit off and on, so that windows can recognize the drive. If you are looking for a reliable back-p drive enclosure, well this is not it.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsDidn't Work with Win 7 Ult

Pros: Sturdy materials, quiet fan with good airflow, simple.

Cons: Didn't work. Poor build quality. Screw holes didn't quite line up. In order to avoid stripping the threads reinserting the screws, I had to push the back plate quite firmly to the side and be VERY careful to catch the threads properly.

Other Thoughts: Says Plug and Play, but Windows 7 Ultimate just completely ignored it. Power was on, drives are good, everything checks out, but no matter what method I tried to get the computer to recognize the drive, it just wouldn't see it. Completely unusable for me. I gave it a 2 because, I think, if it will work for you (whether mine is a defect or a compatibility issue), it's simple and sturdy enough to do well.
