5 out of 5 eggsMy favorite enclosure for small (and older) drives

Pros: This device is very easy to use, and it comes with a supplied y-cable (allowing over-USB power and no extra "wall-wart"). It's very mechanically secure, and (so far) I've never had any problem with any WORKING drive being properly detected, and being useable.

Cons: None, really. It may be slightly larger than is absolutely necessary (and I considered going with a smaller one this time out) but the "no-rattling inside" quality of the housing, and the robustness of it, led me to stick with what I know.

Other Thoughts: I already own four of these and just bought a fifth one. I also have a number of others, including a hybrid SATA/EIDE one, and a couple of smaller ones. In general, if I CARE a lot about what's on the drive, and want it to be useable on an ongoing basis, I put it in one of these.

Each of these houses a removed/replaced laptop EIDE drive. Each time I've upgraded to a newer drive, I've swapped it out and put the old one in one of these enclosures.

I've just swapped out the 120GB in an old laptop for a 320 (the largest 2.5 EIDE drive I can find anywhere), to give this old laptop a bit more life (granted, not as a modern gaming machine, but it's perfectly serviceable for routine media, browsing, and light productivity work, and can run games from its era... nearly a decade ago... quite well)

The old 120GB drive will become a portable "media" drive (connected through an external powered USB hub... I can power several external devices all using a single "wall wart" that way) and using two of the plugs on that hub (to properly power the drive). This drive enclosure is key to that.

Remember, you can buy an aftermarket external power supply as well.. the connection is there on the enclosure... but one is not supplied.

This is a definite "niche market" item these days, but if you need an enclosure for an older EIDE laptop drive, this is the one I'd personally recommend.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Works great for the price.

Cons: Gets a little too warm after awhile.

Other Thoughts: A friends motherboard failed and important documents that he didn't backup needed to be retrieved.

I was able to retrieve important documents successfully.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding value

Pros: Size is simply as big as it needs to be to hold the drive securely. Weight is good, heavy cast aluminum construction, with plastic end caps. Undermentioned in the text is that there is a socket for providing external 5VDC power using a (not included) power supply, so both USB plugs may not be necessary. Everything you need is provided, including spare screws, screwdriver and a soft carry case. Do note: This is an IDE enclosure, not SATA!

Cons: Not necessarily a con. The screws that hold the end caps to the enclosure are *tiny*! Use a toothpick tip to apply the tiniest drop of nail polish to the screw threads to ensure they don't work loose during normal handling. Use care starting the screws into the threads, and do NOT apply excessive force. It is not needed to hold the caps in place and the threads will strip if you try to tighten the screws down. None of mine stripped and I still have two spares, if I need them.

Other Thoughts: Just what I needed, with nice accessory package. It is a high quality bargain in its price point class.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Works flawlessly. Typical USB 2.0 transfer rates.
Nice sturdy build.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Would buy more of these if I had more old IDE drives for extra storage uses.

5 out of 5 eggs2 days, so far so great

Pros: -Solid build, feels durable
-Nice USB cable
-Port to connect external power if necessary
-Runs Ubuntu on my laptop using only one USB port for data AND power.
-First seemingly quality and cheap device I've seen from Rosewill

Cons: None so far(I think- look in bottom of "Other toughts").

I shouldn't speak too soon, it is a Rosewill, but thus far, they have exceeded my expectations with this.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this to re-purpose an old laptop HDD I had a few years back, I didn't want to toss a perfectly good HDD just because it was an IDE. I already have a HDD and SSD in my two hard drive bays in my laptop with a Windows 7 and Windows 8 install, but I wanted to be able to use Ubuntu as well, so this was perfect. I can even plug it into other computers and use this OS install on all my computers (I hope).

My only concern is there was on instance where my laptop unexpectedly shut down while using this drive in Ubuntu. I'm not sure if it was the HDD itself, the enclosure, or Ubuntu just crashing because I tweaked it a bit. But it was only one instance so far, and I can't definitively say it was the enclosure that cause it.

For $12, you can't go wrong with this.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks as needed

Pros: -Made an old 250gb IDE drive into an external drive.
-Easy disassemble, so no need for directions.

Cons: -Transfers were a little slow compared to other 2.0 IDE enclosures I've had in the past.
-Easy to lose all the small parts; I wish it was tool-less.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: While it worked it was fast for an IDE/USB 2.0 enclosure. It's an attractive matte black as opposed to some other brands.

Cons: I purchased this in the hopes of breathing new life into an old laptop HDD, which it did for about 2 weeks. At that point it started glitching when I attempted to watch video directly off of the drive. Given that the drive is old I assumed that the drive was going bad (though the SMART test I'd ran on that drive said otherwise) so I figured I'd use it until it stopped working. I continued to use the drive for another week as a transport disk, though instead of playing directly from the drive I moved things from external drive to an internal one. At the end of the one week mark of using it this way the read/write speeds went downhill and the drive started failing to mount. Finally, it just stopped in the middle of a transfer and refused to dismount cleanly. After that I couldn't get it to mount anywhere while inside the Rosewill case. At that point I pulled the HDD from the case and tested it on a shim. Not only did it mount that way, but another SMART test came back clean. At that point it was quite clear where the issue was coming from. I therefore purchased a different external enclosure, which works fine.

Other Thoughts: This is my second failure of a piece of Rosewill tech and probably my last purchase of this name. I'd return it but at ten dollars it's not worth the trouble for me to return it and hope that the next one works.

It's worth noting that the Rosewill cables I own (I have about 6 in use right now) have been fine - some of them for many years.
