5 out of 5 eggsExternally Saved

Pros: Purchased this item for a friend as a gift. When they received it and used it they were very pleased with the item. I have several Rosewill external enclosures myself and I have never had a problem with them over the years that I have had them in service. I fully recommend Rosewill enclosures if you want to build your own external storage drive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great Price!

3 out of 5 eggsOne worked fine, one didn't... well sort of.

Pros: Easy to put together. Seems well made, nice fit and finish. Nice and small for holding a 3.5" drive.

Cons: I got (2) of these. One of the drives (WD) was very tight when putting it together. The IDE cable was folded very tight. It worked fine, but seems tighter than it should be.

The second one wouldn't boot with the HDD. The HDD was a 320GB Maxtor ATA133. The drive would make this high-pitched whining noise, kind of like it was trying to spin up but couldn't. I tried the drive on another interface I had and it worked fine, so it wasn't the drive. I tested the enclosure with another drive so the enclosure was fine. After digging through some other comments, this appears not to be an isolated case. The enclosure doesn't appear to have enough power available to spin the Maxtor drive. After doing a little swap-tronics with another enclosure, I was able to get it to work. I pulled swapped HDDs with another enclosure and everything was fine.

Other Thoughts: In the end, both worked. Can't explain why the 320GB Maxtor drive didn't work. I tried two other smaller Maxtor drives and both of them worked fine. I gave it 3/5 due to this. Kind of a pain not knowing if the drive will work with the enclosure or not.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat enclousre

Pros: Good price, quality. Drive fits well. Looks good.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: As long as the drive is formatted, it will be recognized. The notes about formatting apply to new (unformatted) drives, and drives that have the Volumes deleted. I used this device with Windows XP, 7, 8.x, and a MacBook 2.1. No problems whatsoever with any of them.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy solution to a long-standing problem

Pros: Easily installs. Insert drive;
connect to plugs mounted on the inside of the end cap. Place the end cap in position and insert two screws.
Insert the supplied USB cord and connect to the computer. Plug in and connect the supplied power adapter.
Put the rear mounted power switch to the ON position.
Watch your PC instantly recognize the drive.

For years I have had several unusable IDE drives with data I could no longer access. This solution has now made all of these drives as part of my PC. I couldn't be happier with how well this worked. I recommended that my son (sent him the link), who shares the same problem, buy as many as he needs. This is a great way to end what has been a nagging pain.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I would buy as many as I would require, and would highly recommend to my friends, who have learned to trust me to be critical of everything.

5 out of 5 eggsBest bargain to hunt down

Pros: Simple to put together with everything included in the kit. Would buy another one if needed. Priced just right,

Cons: Cons???? What cons??? No Cons to think of..

Other Thoughts: Had an extra 250 gig hard drive laying around. decided to buy this enclosure for a computer user to store her files when she wants or use to their preference.. This one enclosure is a must when having extra IDE hard drives laying around. waiting to be used. Grab these while you can... You wont regret the purchase. :)

3 out of 5 eggsNO NEED TO FORMAT in Win7

Pros: It's got some heft to it. It's not ugly. Simple installation. Plugged it in and it worked. I now have access to some old files I never thought I'd see again. Nostalgia points. However, if I followed the instructions, I would've ended up losing all of said data. See Other thoughts.

Cons: There is a faint whirring/humming sound that is audible when it's powered on. This has nothing to do with the drive spinning. It's pretty quiet, though. Could be USB 3.0, but I paid for 2.0 so not really a con.

Would've given it 4 eggs, but see below.

Other Thoughts: The instructions pretty much just state to format the drive after you plug it in, and walk you through this.

However, if you're like me and bought the enclosure to gain access to some old goodies on a dinosaur IDE HDD you had, well having to format would be a pretty big downer.

Also, on the inside of the enclosure, reads a sticker that says WARNING: MUST FORMAT HDD BEFORE USING.

Never one to heed warnings, I promptly installed my HDD, turned it on, plugged it in and connected the USB cable.

The stars and planets aligned! Windows 7 instantly recognized the drive and installed any needed drivers automatically, and the drive was immediately available for use. Files still there in their slightly awkward, decade old glory.

While this is wonderful and saved me having to print a return shipping label, someone who perhaps didn't really know what formatting really meant may end up deleting all of the data they were in fact trying to salvage in the first place. I mean, I love me some irony and all, but not cool.

Or, someone may order this, see the sticker/instructions and then just return the enclosure outright without trying to install it. So don't do that.

3 out of 5 eggs60GB Maxtor Owners Beware

Pros: Worked with my 13.5 GB IBM (DJNA-371350), 15GB Quantum Fireball (LM15A014), and 20GB Maxtor DiamondMax (5T020H2)

Cons: I have 2 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus, model 6Y060P0, manufactured March 2003, and this powered enclosure will not spin the disks. Power requirement for the HDD states at 12V needs 960 mA (average read/write), however requires 1509 mA for spin-up (peak). My other Maxtor, 20GB requires more mA for spin-up and it does so with no problem. Can't figure it out.

Other Thoughts: Good price for OK quality build.

5 out of 5 eggsGood-looking, quality enclosure

Pros: Quality materials, good build, strong metal casing and quality cables

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This is just a good quality IDE external enclosure. I wish it had some sort of external indicator that it's for IDEs, since I also bought one for SATA and can't tell the difference externally when trying to decide which one to plug in. But I can put a little tag on myself to solve that issue. Clean, strong, good looking external enclosure. Note this is SATA2, so not as fast as a SATA3 enclosure, which they also make.
