5 out of 5 eggsHeat produced depends on the drive.

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Easy to assemble as long as you pay attention to which screws go where.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: While this enclosure has no fan or ventilation, the heat generated is entirely due to the hard drive used.
I installed a 5 year old Seagate Barracuda salvaged from a dumpster PC, and after hours of use in a 70 degree F room, it topped out at a comfortable 104 degrees F.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't like to be plugged in all the timw

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Works

Cons: gets hot enough to shut itself off.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to roll my own DVR external expansion drive for use with my Verizon FIOS DVR box. With the constant read/write, the case gets hot and occasionally disconnects and won't reconnect without leaving it unplugged from my DVR overnight to cool off. I imagine if you're using it sporadically, it'll be perfect. If you need a case that'll handle 24/7 access, get one with a fan.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy, and just works

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: I have two of these Rosewill enclosures - this model and an older one with an internal IDE interface. Both work just fine w/o any issues. Be aware that these have USB2 external interfaces, and are as a result a bit slow with that compared to eSATA, USB3, etc... I run WD "Green" hard drives in these and have never had the case get any hotter than just a slight bit warm to the touch after copying large files. Have used the enclosures on both Win7 and Mac OSX computers with the drives formatted as FAT32, plus one is regularly used on my Roku 2 box - all function just fine.

Cons: Make sure you use a "std" size 3.5" HDD, as it can be a snug fit. Also, there are *different* sizes of screws supplied for different parts of the enclosure. Be sure to keep track of what sized screw goes where. The screws are by their nature a bit small, but take it slow & easy with the installation, don't cross-thread any of them, and you'll be OK.

Other Thoughts: Nothing fancy. No fans, excessive lights, or other features that would increase the cost. 5 eggs for being just a good, basic enclosure.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks perfectly.

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Easy to assemble, two choices of cable to use.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I got this because the original casing died on me. I opened it up, replaced it with this, and it works again like perfect.

1 out of 5 eggsGo back to the old model

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Didn't have any issues with the screws, all the screws fit perfectly and the drive went in easily.

Cons: Powers down to soon and no way of getting it to power back up.

Other Thoughts: Wish I had read the more recent reviews before buying this. I have purchased several of these in the past and they still work great but like other reviewers mentioned recently, they must of made changes to this model because I too am experiencing the shutdown problem but mine takes less than a minute when it cycles down, no power light, no spinning of the drive, nothing and the only way I can wake it up is re-powering the enclosure or unplugging it and plugging it back in...what a pain. Now I have to send it back and find another brand until Rosewill figures out the problem. I don't understand why it is taking so long to fix the problem but the reviews started going south around a year ago so I am not going to hold my breath.

2 out of 5 eggsThe good old days

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Good Aesthetics.
Good connectivity.
Decent price.
Worked in the end...sort of

Cons: Poor manufacturing practices. Screws did not fit or align with enclosure and took more force to install then comfortable. Power adapter style changed to awkward size and shape for traditional surge protectors.
Would not recommend at this time unless you don't mind modifying it just to get everything to fit.

Other Thoughts: I own 3 of these now. My first two I bought in 2010 and they have been amazing. I swap drives out of them all the time and everything always works the way its supposed to can't say enough good things about them. I think Rosewill must have change manufactures/ suppliers because my new enclosure was not built to the same tolerances or standards.
6 screws hold this unit together. 2 screws mount the SATA interface and electronics to the hard drive. These screws which fit perfectly my older models were too thick to fit in the new one. they did not mount flush with the metal bracket that attaches to the hard drive and as a result the drive would not slide into the enclosure as designed to. I tried my new enclosure with the screws from an old one and it fit perfectly. I ended up grinding down the heads of the screws to give them the proper shape. when you have to take an angle grinder to computer components, something is wrong.
The second set of screws holds the front of the drive in place sliding through holes in the side of the enclosure and inserting into the HDD mounting holes. These holes did not line up as well as they should have and were difficult to get in. But in the end they fit. The last two screws which hold the plastic back of the adapter portion to the aluminum hosing were longer then necessary and took more force than is typical with this type of thing. I am keeping this devise solely because it matches my old ones. I will never take it apart again nor will i buy another.

To Rosewill: Don't apologize, just fix it.

3 out of 5 eggsGets pretty warm

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Cheap. Works

Cons: It gets warm really fast. I only turn it on when I am ready to transfer files to/from the drive, I don't recommend it for extended read/writes like video editing.

2 out of 5 eggsnot very good

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Solid case construction and vertical stand

Cons: - Hitachi 1TB drive (the one I purchased it for) was extremely slow in the enclosure. It turned out it was running at SATA-150 speed.
- Thankfully I also had a Seagate 500GB drive and it work fine at SATA-300 as supposed to. So I found *some* use for the case. I really needed 1 TB drive though.
- Screws that hold the I/O assembly (the ones that attaches on the drive itself before sliding it into the case) were too big - the drive would not slide in. Thankfully I had spare screws with smaller heads. Absolutely unacceptable - what if I didn't have extra screws laying around?
- Inactivity shut-off is very annoying. The drive powers down after about 5 min of inactivity. This is ridiculous, at least make it a reasonable timeout like 15 min (and ideally give me a way to disable this "feature"

Other Thoughts: Still looking for an enclosure that would work with Hitachi 1TB drive. It will definitely will not be a Rosewill.

5 out of 5 eggsCant Beat It

This review is from: Rosewill RX35-AT-SC BLK Full Aluminum Cover, Metal Tray 3.5" Black USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: For the money, this is an excellent Product, hope they never stop making it or make any changes to it. Doesn't need upgrades, good just as it is.

Cons: Nada

Other Thoughts: Newegg, Keep up the good work, like what you have done with shipping options.
