5 out of 5 eggsBest External Enclosure I've ever got from Rosewill!

Pros: The Aluminum metal body is superb
It's sleek and has a great design
Looks great on my desk with the included vertical stand
The metal holes on the front design is awesome
Runs cool to the touch even after 1 week of it being contantly ON
I like that it has a power on/off button because some times I don't need this unit on even though I'm using my PC
Has built in FAN switch so you can decrease/increase fan speeds
Comes with USB 3.0 port (rather than USB 2.0 port)
Also comes with eSATA port
Easy to use, easy to get started. I didn't even have to use the manual at first to get it opened and plug the hard drive in.
I like that it also comes with all necessary cables and the cables are NOT too short (power adapter, eSATA cables & USB cables included)
The FAN on top of the case is brilliant because it blows out hot air, dissipating the heat.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to put my additional 2TB Seagate Hard Drive in and so far its worked flawlessly and its wonderful! I don't use the eSATA ports only the USb 3.0 PORT

I like the simple aesthetic designs and ease of use. Plus, the fan

If you need an an external enclosure for one of your hard drives, this one will do fine. I would highly recommend this ROSEWILL external enclosure.

1 out of 5 eggsFan stopped working

Pros: Good design, quiet fan operation, HDD unit stays cool, fast USB3 connection

Cons: Little after 1 year of fairly light use (probably less than 200 hours in total), the fan stopped working. The fan unit & the cable, connector are fine. I think it's something to do with the fan speed controller. I hope the manufacture takes care of the defective units like this. Should I through this shiny bricky away and order another one? I am afraid that the same thing happens again.

Other Thoughts: I have been searching a good HDD enclosure with a quiet fan after Antec's MX100. MX100 had been my favourite for many years but I needed USB3. So my expectation was high and I really love how they build the unit. But now it stopped working. I don't see too many information about Rosewill's product.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood economical unit

Pros: Cheap, dependable

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this and a 1 TB HDD to back up my music, docs and pictures. Haven't had a single issue with it, works great. If you keep your office space really quiet, you might not like the fan on full, but it's adjustable. In my office, there is always music on or a game playing, so it's not an issue for me.

3 out of 5 eggsUPDATE Rosewill METAS Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" Black / Silver SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Great case design. Works well in USB 2 mode. Run cooler. Adjustable fan. Easy to install drives. Would be easy to switch if you could get more drive holders. The case can be mounted horizontally or vertically. Cost is about right. Having eSATA and USB 3 is great.

Cons: I bought 2 of these Ext. Enclosures and both can not hold contact with the drive in USB 3 nor eSATA modes. The drive connection drops out and only rebooting the system will bring them back. (works well in USB 2 Mode only). See update in other thoughts below.

Other Thoughts: I tried many configurations and found that these 2 cases will work as advertised IF and ONLY IF they are connected to the motherboard direct. They will not work in USB3 nor eSATA modes and loose the connections with the drive if connected to a HUB or front case connection. USB2 mode works every where no problems. Other USB3 & eSTA items work fine at the hubs and front case ports. The 2 cases should do like wise, there is still a problem. Rosewill tech assist is trying to help sort out the problem. Still a good company to buy from.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB 3 & eSATA modes drop connection

Pros: Great case design. Works well in USB 2 mode. Run cooler. Adjustable fan. Easy to install drives. Would be easy to switch if you could get more drive holders. The case can be mounted horizontally or vertically. Cost is about right. Having eSATA and USB 3 is great if they worked.

Cons: I have bought many Rosewill products in the past and all were great. This case is not up to their high standards. I bought 2 of these Ext. Enclosures and both can not hold contact with the drive in USB 3 nor eSATA modes. The drive connection drops out and only rebooting the system will bring them back. (works well in USB 2 Mode only). Tried many drives, on many systems ( WIN 8.1), cables, same results. No hot swapping ability in either mode, must reboot.

Other Thoughts: I hope Rosewill will look into this and do something. Do not buy until a fix is found (firmware? software?) and put out or updated. If not I suggest a recall of these defective models. Should make & sell extra trays. They should add optional stand off pads/legs for horizontal stacking of 2 or more. It could be that I was just unlucky to get 2 bad cases.

4 out of 5 eggsDied after three years of use

Pros: - Very easy to install hard drive
- Variable speed fan
- Aluminum enclosure
- Can be oriented horizontally or vertically
- USB 3.0 & eSata ports

Cons: - It would be nice if Newegg offered extra trays for this

Other Thoughts: This unit I've had since 2011 and it ran fine until recently when I started noticing poor performance from the hard drive (2-5MB/sec read speed). After a couple power cycles the drive would not spin up, but the enclosure fan and led still work. Took the drive out and plugged it into my trusty Thermaltake Blacx dock, and drive works fine.

Unfortunately, it is out of warranty. It's too bad because it is a nice enclosure. Not sure if I am going to buy it again.

5 out of 5 eggssmall test

Pros: All that it says it is.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: I normally don't post this soon but I wanted to get this in. You mount your HDD onto a tray, with screws. Fine by me, I'm using a 1T drive for backup. So if you're looking to hot swap this isn't it.

1 out of 5 eggsBad

Pros: E-sata, easy to remove disk (doesn't need to be completely disassembled like others). Reliable connection when connecting to a usb2 port.

Cons: I have a WD Black 2Tb with the jumper set to 3Gb/s (Sata II) in this enclosure and it disconnects randomly every 10 minutes or so while connected to a usb3 port, which makes file transfers constantly fail. It disconnects, then immediately reconnects, which brings up the autoplay dialogs for each partition and this is extremely annoying. Works fine with usb2, so thankfully my new laptop has one old usb2 port.

Other Thoughts: The only reason I bought this was faster usb3 connectivity because I already had a usb2 external enclosure. Since it only works reliably with usb2, this purchase was a complete waste of $$

4 out of 5 eggsA Good Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: I really like the build of this external hard drive case. It has good cooling and the aluminum case is nice and not to big. It has USB 3 backward compatible with USB 2 as well along with Esata port which is what I use.

Cons: The one really big thing I do not like about this unit is no power switch on the front of the unit? It is on the back? The other small things I do not like about it is it does not have an activity LED on the front; it only has a power indicator. So because it does not have the power switch on the front I removed one star due to bad planning from the manufacture…

Other Thoughts: If it had the power switch and a activity LED as well as extra hard drive racks available, it would get 5 stars...

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Have used multiple hard disk drives in this with no problem! Swapping out hard drives is as simple as removing the sled, unscrewing at least two screws (or more if you choose to secure the drive. I just use two, though) and then screwing in the new drive.

Cons: Not 100% tool-less, but I can get away with only using two screws so it's still pretty convenient.
