5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive but not cheap, what Rosewill does well

Pros: - USB 3.0 Speed
- Cooling fan connected to switch, can be turned on and off as needed
- Above said, Al sidewalls and mesh front construction keep this box relatively cool
- Two Blue LEDs not obnoxious-one led for power, one for read/write
-No internal HDD spool-down or power save features--this is a good thing-see below

Cons: - Depending on install location, included USB 3.0 cable is a bit short. Also, compared to the *jungle-named web store* Basics cable I used as a longer replacement, the Rosewill cable has a poor fit at the B (square) end.

Other Thoughts: Most modern SATA drives meant for storage applications (like NAS-labeled drives) have power management features build into their firmware. As such, it is no longer necessary for enclosures to have this technology. What this means is that if you end up with a poorly-working NAS drive like the WD Red that had the bad firmware, you can rule out the enclosure. This Rosewill enclosure too the drive and did its job to interface with it. Now that the WD Red is working properly (following a firmware update), I can appreciate the efficiency of the RX-358. Would recommend to anyone looking for an external desktop backup unit or a basic NAS extension for the current crop of smart routers on the market.

2 out of 5 eggsLights on but nobody home

Pros: Has a fan and esata

Cons: Unreliable in just intermittent use. Died after 4 years as primary backup for raid system and laptops, leaving 2TB backup drive in 'raw' state with corrupted file system (after moving to open port in PC case). No power to drives in case after failure. Led lights too bright.

Other Thoughts: Second unit of this make to fail, first was PATA unit.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: WHEN it worked, it worked well, both for eSata (hot swapped fine), USB 2 and USB3.

Cons: Unfortunately, (and of course only a few months after 1 year warranty ended), this thing started getting flakey. It now gives USB Mass Storage Code 10 errors in Device Manager on all three machines I've tried it on (Win 7, Win 8.1) with multiple drives, all of which work fine in another el cheapo enclosure. Annoying screwdriver-required design (my fault for not researching).

Other Thoughts: Believe the poor reviews about reliability and flakiness. Regretting this purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive size adapter

Pros: Precise
Drives fit well
Screws included

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have four of these to mount 2.5-inch SSDs into a 4-bay ACC IcyDock. They fit great and I had no issues with the assembly. The IcyDock is highly recommended too! It makes it easy to pull the drives one at a time, either to check them or to replace them, or just to clean off accumulated dust. Shut down first unless you have a hot-swap array set up.

2 out of 5 eggsProblems with connection

Pros: This is a really nice design. The fan is great to have. Very easy to install a HDD.

Cons: When I first switch it on, both the top and bottom LEDs come on. Windows then makes the sound for sensing something got plugged in. A few seconds to a few minutes later, Windows then makes the "unplugged" sound, and the bottom LED turns off, indicating that there is no activity whatsoever with the drive. This happens on every one of my 4 computers I have.

It is basically a craps shoot for whether the drive is going to be recognized when I hit the switch on. Sometimes it is the first, second, and even up to four times of power toggling to get it to be recognized.

I have tried other drives inside this enclosure to make sure that this was limited to the enclosure itself. I have also tried it on multiple computers, restarts of those computers, with Windows AND Linux, and the same problem occurs.

I'm not sure what to do here, because it is very inconvenient to have to play the lottery when trying to turn this thing on. With the amount of reviews that this product has on Newegg, I would think this would have been worth it, but I am very disappointed.

Other Thoughts: I am a couple weeks past Newegg's 30-day return policy so I'm not sure what to do now. I have bought plenty of Rosewill products in the past with no problems whatsoever, and this is the first time I have had a bad experience with the quality of their stuff.

It would be cool if this could be replaced with one that works.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap and works for now

Pros: So for I like it. the whole thing is held together by screws, on mine all the holes lined up. Data transfer rate seem good, I've had up to 200 mbs with the pc I use. so far I've transferred 4Tb using this case. It has two lights one for power and one light that blinks when transferring data. The fan can be turned on and off, but the fan is quite so why turn it off.

Cons: The two lights that I mentioned are extremely bright and yiu can't turn them off. I don't know if this has to do with my hard drive or the enclosure but it seems that some time my hard drive won't spine up all the way at times kinda like it's not getting enough power. And it seems that this enclosure resonates the sounds from the hard drive inside.

1 out of 5 eggsRosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: None at this time other than seems to be working.

Cons: I received this and started to assebmle my WD Purple drive into it. I noticed that the drive moutning holes where being covered 1/8-1/4 or more by the drive enclosure slots. The rear holes being worse than the front ones. Not wanting to spend 10$ and several weeks on trying to return this, I banged down the metal tabs on the drive enclosure that hold the drive, this got it most the way but I had to file the enclosure slots also so I could mount my drive. I could then mount my drive in the enclosure. I assembled one side cover then I tried to assemble the other side cover and noted the last screw would not go more than 2 turns. I removed the removed the other screws from the cover and tried each one in the "bad hole", they all fit fine so I tried the bad screw in the other holes, it would not go in, so I had one bad screw. I created a user account and included the above info, asking only for one more new black cover screw, I also advised I took a picture of the drive holes misalignment, I also advised of a big problem with the "assembly" instructions. Upon submittal my browser page just started flipping thru what seemed to be every page I had been on in the registration and RMA process. I logged out closed the browser and tried again, same spinning of pages, I tried with a different browser, got the same results. Not knowing if my registration and RMA (asking for 1 screw) had made it, I sent an email in thru general contact site, with all of the above. To my surprise the next day I checked and saw a reply, I dont know if it came from my account or the email. It asked for a picture of the part and my new egg invoice. So I took a picture of the screw and pdf copy of my invoice and sent it back. That was Jan 8, 2015, it is now Jan 32 2015, I have had no response back and no screw sent and Im living with a mechanically deficient product. My WD purple drive did align in other external and internal drive mounts I have here at home. The "assembly" guide documentation enclosed is acutally "disasembly" because it starts with pcitures and words of disaasembly an enclosure that already has a drive in it. I guess that's fine, but dont label the instructions "assembly", You need to go to the last step and then go backwards to the first step and there are also other issues. I politely provided all this feedback to them, mechanical case issues, parts issues, documentation issues.

Other Thoughts: I don't mind to much when a product has a problem, what s REALLY important to me is the response of the company. I asked them to fix my account from spinning and to please send me a new screw, after one initial quick reply which was probably auto generated and after taking the time to do all the things they asked of me (over 1 tiny screw) there is still no response or result. I'm a disabled vet and involved in alot of medical treatment at this time, I really dont have time to try to go back and make calls and send other emails to fight for a screw. First and last Rosewill product.

3 out of 5 eggsAverage enclosure, beware if you require eSATA connection

Pros: Works very well in USB 2.0/3.0 modes.

Supports 4GB HDDs (although only tested up to 3GB.)

Not too difficult to install HDD into the enclosure.

Includes adequate-length USB and eSATA cables.

External PSU is compact and lightweight.

Internal fan is much quieter than previous Rosewill model.

Works well attached to external SAN via USB 2.0.

Sturdy metal case, not a lot of plastic used in structural areas.

Fan can be switched on or off, making the unit even quieter, if desired.

Cons: Could not get -2- different PCs to recognize the external HDD via eSATA. Drive would show up under the BIOS and within Management -> Disk Drives, but OS would not recognize the drive as a valid storage device, making it inaccessible under Win7 HP x64.

HDD installation requires use of tools and manipulating very small screws. A tool-less installation design would be a great improvement.

Requires external PSU (aka "wall wart.")

Blue activity LED stays illuminated 100% of the time, even when drive is not being accessed. This makes it nearly impossible to determine when HDD is actually in-use or idle.

Other Thoughts: Despite all the Cons (and the significant eSATA issue,) this external enclosure still does exactly what I needed it to, which is to serve as a failsafe backup to my RAID 1 NAS unit. So far, there have been no failures to perform successfully in this role. I purchased this enclosure as an upgrade to a previous Rosewill unit of the same design, except the previous model only supported 2GB and I needed to use a 3GB HDD.

If it weren't for the eSATA problem, I would have only deducted -1- Egg for the other Cons, but the inability to be used in this fashion is a rather major drawback.

I tried booting the PCs with the external drive attached and already running, connecting it post-boot then powering up the enclosure, and connecting post-boot while the enclosure was already powered-on and the OS would not recognize the volume on -2- different PCs under any circumstances. I also tried the above with the HDD both formatted and unformatted, it made no difference either way.

If you're looking for an external enclosure to connect via USB, this may be a great choice. However, if you need an eSATA solution, you may want to look elsewhere.

NOTE: Your specific PC could possibly connect via eSATA, there's no way for me to test otherwise, but -2- different PCs with different motherboards, CPUs, RAM, BIOS, drives and peripherals indicate otherwise. Both systems DO share the same OS, so this is another factor to consider.
