4 out of 5 eggsWorks with my 4TB Drive

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Recognized my 4TB Seagate Drive running on a 2007 iMac (USB2, not USB3). Fan is always nice, though it might not be all that necessary as the case has plenty portals for ventilation. Case is very sturdy and the fan can be disabled independently of power, which is nice.

Cons: As others have mentioned - the LED's are super bright. The case is not a screwless design. Those aren't really cons to me, but some may not like that. The case should have rubberized feet included.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased several of these over the years and all are still working properly. The older cases would not see the full 4TB but this one does as reported by NewEgg. As long as it stands the test of time, I'll be happy with it.

1 out of 5 eggsQuit just after warranty ran out

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Unit worked great to start with. USB3 and eSATA both gave great transfer times.

Cons: I only used this unit about 10 times until this past weekend when I went to backup some files and the drive was not running. I took drive out and used an external cable and the drive was fine. Tried another drive and same thing.

Other Thoughts: I contacted Rosewill to see if they would help out since the unit was only a couple of months out of warranty and was told sorry no help for you. Last Rosewill product I buy for home or work. And I buy a lot for work. Oh well.

1 out of 5 eggsComplete waste of money

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Has cooling fan
Solid construction
Works with drives up to 4TB (I only used a 3TB drive in it).

Cons: USB 3.0 port broke within a month of using the enclosure.
LEDs are a tad bright.

Other Thoughts: Judging by its specs and price, I had hoped this would be a high quality product, but sadly one half of its usefulness (arguably the better half) broke after only a month or so of using the enclosure. I have always had some minor difficulties using eSATA on my Windows 7 machine, so the reason I bought this expensive external case was because it had both eSATA *and* USB 3.0. Much to my dismay, only the eSATA port works now... which is quite disappointing. I would have returned this product to the manufacturer but I was not quick enough to get around to it before the warranty period expired and now I am stuck with a half-broken piece of equipment. The eSATA port has been working so far without much headache, but again, the *MAIN* reason I bought it was to have the option of using USB 3.0 when needed, and now that part is useless. The only reason I even spent such a large amount of money on an external HDD enclosure was because I had hoped it would be the last one I'd have to buy in a long time... looks like I was wrong. I will never buy a Rosewill product again. If you want to spend $60 on a HDD enclosure, I'd recommend a different brand.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with 4TB drive

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Easy to set up, attractive
Good ventilation
Comes with eSATA and USB cables

Cons: The blue lights are pretty bright, but it doesn't bother me. Looks kind of cool, actually.
The box states that it only supports 2TB, but NewEgg says 4TB.
Metal frame; so if you have a piano-finish CPU case as I do, and rest the enclosure on the case, it could scratch it if not careful.

Other Thoughts: I was apprehensive getting it since some reviews say it didn't work with 4TB. My Seagate 4tb works fine, and I don't see why not, as long as you Operating System supports it. Be sure to partition it correctly to get full 4tb (ie, GPT + NTFS).

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: large quiet fan, pleasant construction

Cons: Doesn't necessarily work.

Quite the opposite of 'tool-less': 10 screws to open and swap drives.

Other Thoughts: note: using this with an Asrock Z77 Extreme 6 system, with 2.60 bios. Didn't try 2.80 bios, as the release notes (such as they are) say nothing about this sort of problem, and didn't want to risk bricking the system for no good reason.

Got this enclosure to go along with a 4TB WD hd, as this was one of the few that explicitly said it supported 4TB drives (and not just 3TB). I'd assume that any of the >2TB enclosures will handle 3's, 4's, and whatever, but why find out.

Assembled it, and plugged it in with a 6' eSATA cable. Didn't detect at all. Didn't care to look into that at the moment, so I connected it with the USB3 cable included, which worked fine. Copied a whole bunch of files back and forth without issue.

Then I rebooted my system. The system locks up at the very first screen of the POST and the HD light in the enclosure flashes at a constant 1Hz or so. The HD isn't *doing* anything at this point (not spinning up), it seems to be objecting to whatever 'wakeup' command the BIOS sent over the wire. Or something.

Turn the enclosure off and the system boots just peachy. If I turn the enclosure on after the system is up, all is well -- but that's hardly an acceptable solution.

Tried both USB3 controllers (Intel and Etron) on the mobo, same deal with both. Tried connecting with USB2. Same thing.

Tried using the enclosed eSATA cable, instead. That works, in the the machine boots up and the drive is visible. But the connection is iffy, at best. When I tried copying files and whatnot to the drive it eventually stops responding.

TL;DR - ripped the drive out of the enclosure and stuck it directly in my system, where it boots up and works flawlessly.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked fine; not well anymore

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Simple install, good design and great looks, not too loud

Cons: USB connectivity issue*

Other Thoughts: To expand on the cons, the USB cable needs to be plugged in, removed and retried about five times before the computer can recognize it... This has been attempted on all my USB ports and it is the same for all ports.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: It is a wonderful machine. The fan can be turned on and off. It's simple design makes it easy to work with.

Cons: Sometimes it takes a while for my computers to recognized that it is pluggedin... then again I am trying to work it with much older hardware

1 out of 5 eggsSO far not so good

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Looks nice, easy to install the drive, fan has an off switch, nice USB 3 full size connector, eSATA, fan is not loud. Says it supports up to 4TB

Cons: Bought this to replace the Seagate expansion drive case based on USB3 Micro connector and it just will not see the drive as a formatted 3TB drive. The Seagate case sees the drive just fine.

If it supports a 4TB drive then it should properly read my 3TB drive. Highly disappointed that it didn't work like it said it should. If I can't get it working over the weekend then I am going to just return it.

Other Thoughts: If this had worked out of the box as advertised then it would get 5 eggs. I have to give it 1 egg because it just doesn't do what it said.

1 out of 5 eggsIt ended up failing completly

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: It supports 4TB hdd. It provides USB3 speeds, and it can connect (I did not try fairly, see below) thru eSata. I have a couple of dozens ot these enclosure's previous versions, all working; so it was know technology. It's very easy to set up. Good size fan.

Cons: I did not use it for the first 2 or 3 weeks (MY bad! Too confident in Rosewill). When I began using it I noticed that it was getting disconnected now and then. But it was working ok for several hours at the time. I though it might be the PCIe USB3 card to which connected or any other interface not understanding the hdd going to sleep. I did not think much of it. But it began to do it more and more often, and last shorter and shorter connected until one day it would connect anymore. More precisely, it gets connected, the OS (Win7 Home sp1) loads drivers for the hdd, and it gets disconnected and unrecognized immediately (3-2-1 min in the last three trys). I tried with 3 different machines, all Win7, one at least with USB3 native from the mobo. Once it's disconnected (and disable?) in one port, it does not connect ever again there (on, off, on/off USB cable or eSata, shutdown, etc, all tried). The hdd contents are OK, and it can be seeing with other units (even the ones that supposedly do not support 4TB! Why did I buy this cr.p?).

Other Thoughts: I never tried with a smaller hdd. I tried only with a Sata 6gb/sec (familiarly called Sata III); it supposedly supports Sata I/II, but no 4TB hdd is Sata II today. So ir it supports 4TB hdds, it should be slower but backwards compatible. I'm not going to try all the other combinations with which it "might" work, for 2 reasons: 1: I bought this one to be able to access this 4TB; 2: It's already failing to keep connected, while it was ok at the begining; so it seems likely that the electronics are already faulty. Searching in the web I discover that the Asmedia controllers that these units have are known to have disconnetion problems. Shame on Rosewill, the NEC units have no problems. and my bad for not discovering it earler. I have not yet gone to Rosewill for a RMA, so I cannot judge their customer service. For a unit this cheap, customer service and warranties should not be consideration. So I also leave it outside the rating. Bad Rosewill SHOULD not FAIL.
