1 out of 5 eggsRosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: None at this time other than seems to be working.

Cons: I received this and started to assebmle my WD Purple drive into it. I noticed that the drive moutning holes where being covered 1/8-1/4 or more by the drive enclosure slots. The rear holes being worse than the front ones. Not wanting to spend 10$ and several weeks on trying to return this, I banged down the metal tabs on the drive enclosure that hold the drive, this got it most the way but I had to file the enclosure slots also so I could mount my drive. I could then mount my drive in the enclosure. I assembled one side cover then I tried to assemble the other side cover and noted the last screw would not go more than 2 turns. I removed the removed the other screws from the cover and tried each one in the "bad hole", they all fit fine so I tried the bad screw in the other holes, it would not go in, so I had one bad screw. I created a user account and included the above info, asking only for one more new black cover screw, I also advised I took a picture of the drive holes misalignment, I also advised of a big problem with the "assembly" instructions. Upon submittal my browser page just started flipping thru what seemed to be every page I had been on in the registration and RMA process. I logged out closed the browser and tried again, same spinning of pages, I tried with a different browser, got the same results. Not knowing if my registration and RMA (asking for 1 screw) had made it, I sent an email in thru general contact site, with all of the above. To my surprise the next day I checked and saw a reply, I dont know if it came from my account or the email. It asked for a picture of the part and my new egg invoice. So I took a picture of the screw and pdf copy of my invoice and sent it back. That was Jan 8, 2015, it is now Jan 32 2015, I have had no response back and no screw sent and Im living with a mechanically deficient product. My WD purple drive did align in other external and internal drive mounts I have here at home. The "assembly" guide documentation enclosed is acutally "disasembly" because it starts with pcitures and words of disaasembly an enclosure that already has a drive in it. I guess that's fine, but dont label the instructions "assembly", You need to go to the last step and then go backwards to the first step and there are also other issues. I politely provided all this feedback to them, mechanical case issues, parts issues, documentation issues.

Other Thoughts: I don't mind to much when a product has a problem, what s REALLY important to me is the response of the company. I asked them to fix my account from spinning and to please send me a new screw, after one initial quick reply which was probably auto generated and after taking the time to do all the things they asked of me (over 1 tiny screw) there is still no response or result. I'm a disabled vet and involved in alot of medical treatment at this time, I really dont have time to try to go back and make calls and send other emails to fight for a screw. First and last Rosewill product.

3 out of 5 eggsAverage enclosure, beware if you require eSATA connection

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Works very well in USB 2.0/3.0 modes.

Supports 4GB HDDs (although only tested up to 3GB.)

Not too difficult to install HDD into the enclosure.

Includes adequate-length USB and eSATA cables.

External PSU is compact and lightweight.

Internal fan is much quieter than previous Rosewill model.

Works well attached to external SAN via USB 2.0.

Sturdy metal case, not a lot of plastic used in structural areas.

Fan can be switched on or off, making the unit even quieter, if desired.

Cons: Could not get -2- different PCs to recognize the external HDD via eSATA. Drive would show up under the BIOS and within Management -> Disk Drives, but OS would not recognize the drive as a valid storage device, making it inaccessible under Win7 HP x64.

HDD installation requires use of tools and manipulating very small screws. A tool-less installation design would be a great improvement.

Requires external PSU (aka "wall wart.")

Blue activity LED stays illuminated 100% of the time, even when drive is not being accessed. This makes it nearly impossible to determine when HDD is actually in-use or idle.

Other Thoughts: Despite all the Cons (and the significant eSATA issue,) this external enclosure still does exactly what I needed it to, which is to serve as a failsafe backup to my RAID 1 NAS unit. So far, there have been no failures to perform successfully in this role. I purchased this enclosure as an upgrade to a previous Rosewill unit of the same design, except the previous model only supported 2GB and I needed to use a 3GB HDD.

If it weren't for the eSATA problem, I would have only deducted -1- Egg for the other Cons, but the inability to be used in this fashion is a rather major drawback.

I tried booting the PCs with the external drive attached and already running, connecting it post-boot then powering up the enclosure, and connecting post-boot while the enclosure was already powered-on and the OS would not recognize the volume on -2- different PCs under any circumstances. I also tried the above with the HDD both formatted and unformatted, it made no difference either way.

If you're looking for an external enclosure to connect via USB, this may be a great choice. However, if you need an eSATA solution, you may want to look elsewhere.

NOTE: Your specific PC could possibly connect via eSATA, there's no way for me to test otherwise, but -2- different PCs with different motherboards, CPUs, RAM, BIOS, drives and peripherals indicate otherwise. Both systems DO share the same OS, so this is another factor to consider.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: FAST transfer of data when using usb 3.0 port.
pretty easy to use
price was good

Cons: Can't switch out hard drives easily. Enclosure screws shut once the hard drive is installed, meaning that it would need to be unscrewed to switch it out.

Other Thoughts: Bought this to be able to copy data and use a harddrive from our old computer that had the motherboard crash. So the pro of it being fast is nice while the con of not being able to switch out the harddrive for another isn't important for me.

5 out of 5 eggsA Great SATA Enclosure

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: The device features a quiet 80mm fan; Assembly is very easy; Built well for endurance

Cons: The manual is full of errors; No non-skid pads on bottom; metal to metal inside the case (HDD rests on metal, not cushioning material).

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these enclosures so I can use SATA drives from a retired computer. Assembly was amazingly simple and the HDD slid into the SATA connector securely. I chose to use USB 3.0, and the connection is pretty fast. These are plug and play, no drivers required. As soon as I fired them up, I immediately had access to the files on the HDD.

Step 4 instructs to secure the HDD with four screws, and then step 5 instructs to slide the HDD into the SATA connectors. They run quiet even though they have large 80mm fans which keep the case amazingly cool. My only gripes have to do with the lack of rubber non-slip pads which should be on the bottom of the unit to minimize vibration, and the lack of cushioning material inside the drive. The HDD contacts the metal directly. My other gripe is the manual. It is pretty much useless. I found several errors. Step 4 has you secure the HDD with screws, then step 5 instructs that you slide the HDD into the SATA connector. This actually already occurred during step 3, and can't occur in step 5 since the screws have already secured the HDD. The manual also continues by giving instructions for formatting the drive. It sounds as if this is a routine procedure. However if I had done this, I would have erased all the data on my drives. Fortunately I know enough not to do this. The manual should have a note that formatting is only required for a new/blank drive. Overall, I'm really happy with these enclosures. They are well built (except the 2 flaws I mentioned), and quiet. A good choice for a very reasonable price.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with 6TB drive

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Works with Windows 7 and a 6TB HGST 7200rpm hard drive. Specs say 4TB maximum capacity, but my new 6TB drive works just fine.

Cons: blue LEDs are a little annoying, easy enough to disconnect though.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks with 6TB

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: I bought 2 of these when they were a higher price. I've been running 1 of them on an HTPC for well over a year with a 3TB Seagate. Swapped the Seagate with a brand new 6TB HGST drive from Newegg and it works perfectly with it.

Cons: The Seagate died in about a year. The fan in this unit is pretty weak, but does pull some air across. I used the drive very lightly as it was just archiving media. I don't know if it's because Seagate is a bad drive since it has documented high failure rates or the fan on the unit wasn't good enough. Another glitch is the wires on the side. Be careful putting your screws in. I didn't notice the thin wire was in the way, and ran a through screw it, exposing the bare metal inside the wire. I wrapped it in electrical tape as it was just for the light on front, and it seems to work fine. But it should've been secured better.

Other Thoughts: I like these so much, I'm getting more. If you don't need lightning or firewire, this is about the best you're going to get for the money. You will need to add rubber "feet" from your favorite supercenter if you want to stack these units as the fan would be blocked.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Very nice alternative to your typical external hard drives. Love having the ability to slap in a drive and transfer files to/from it without having to open up my PC. Not sure if it is the enclosure itself or the drives I've put into it but this thing seems a bit faster than any external USB 3.0 drive that I've ever owned.

Cons: Takes a bit of time to unscrew everything and swap drives. Would be nice if it was faster/easier....but at this price point I'm not going to complain too much.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as intended

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: I actually like the LED and side fan. For me, the fan is ultra quiet. The unit can be set on it's side, or lay horizontal. Performance is fine, can't expect much more out of USB 3.0 with SATA II.

Cons: Doesn't offer SATA III supported drives. While I understand that the throughput on USB 3.0 is limited to 5Gbps (theoretical), it just would be great to get some SATA III capability (6Gbps)... it can be done. do it.

Other Thoughts: I'm not so keen on how the fan is housed in the unit creating an uneven surface. You really can not lay the unit down on the fan side. What would have been nice is to just make the unit a little larger and square (looking at it's front profile). and have a small gap internally with the fan and have ventilation holes around the sides to let air in. This way the unit could lay down on either side and still have air flow.

4 out of 5 eggsRosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Alum.

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C BLK Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Black SATA I/II USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Solid unit, I like the aluminum construction vs plastic. Easy to use and installation. Well thought out design. Fairly stable when stood up as designed.

Cons: Minor, see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: Some reviewers stated that the tabs which the HD rests on are to high, I found this to be true. No issue sliding HD into place, a little effort though to get the rear HD mounting screws in. HD must be pressed into enclosure to align rear holes. Blue LED are pretty bright, but not a bother. Takes some time to switch out HD's, would like to see a design to hold HD that incorporated pins instead of screws? I have two now and would purchase more if needed.
