4 out of 5 eggsRX358 U3C

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: Good quality and good price. HD's seem to run cool and relatively fast with the SATA connection. ISB works well. Except for fans dying, they last for many years.

Cons: I have purchased eight of these over the years. This review applies only to the two most recent. The LEDs are incredibly bright and both stay on continuously. I have them mounted in a rack under a table so the brightness is not really an issue but I sure wouldn't want them on a desktop - maybe a landing strip. I really think that the continuous on is a big step backward. With the right LED blinking to signify disk activity, I could tell at a glance if an automated backup or a defrag was running. Now it's just glare and I will look at other enclosure in the future - ones with LED's that do more than just glare. I read one review where the writer said that while the LEDs both stay on all the time, the right one blinks to signify disk activity. The ones I have show absolutely no change when disk activity is occurring.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest that you sell replacement fans - and design so that they can easily be replaced. I read about these enclosures failing but I have never had one fail except for fans getting noisy, vibrating and/or stopping.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: I've purchased a total of 5 in either black or silver. Great enclosure.

Works with 4TB hard drives.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've generally used a 1TB hard drive in these cases. However, I did put a 4TB HGST hard drive in this silver one. Due to the 4TB hard drive size it is louder, creates more vibration.

1 out of 5 eggsNon existent QA

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: IF IT WORKS... Good specs, reasonable build quality, good performance, high (but still, reasonable) price.

Cons: I already own this HDD case previous version (USB 2.0). Got this one because I was pleased with its reliability. I installed an HDD, then, to my disappointment, found the eSATA port profoundly dead. I took out the HDD, removed the PCB and found that the failure was caused by a solder bridge right across the eSATA connector. Was time consuming to find, easy to fix.

Other Thoughts: This is a hard fault -- solid proof that Rosewill doesn't bother to test products before kicking them out the door. Looking at previous reviews, I wasn't surprised to find 10% of 1 egg and 8% of 2 eggs. Most of these 18%, I am sure, are due to product failures that could be avoided by a modicum of QA. Of course, cost of QA would be paid by Rosewill, while lack of it (far, far, far higher cost) is borne by customers.

No, Rosewill are no different that just about any manufacturer; even better than some (I received 4 -- that's, right, FOUR -- nonfunctional ASRock mother boards before getting one that worked (with faults, but, at least, it worked).
Shipping alone cost me over $100.

Peace.

4 out of 5 eggsAll well, just one other thing.

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: Works will all of my old drives (under 500MB).

Cons: My new 1TB WDC Blue in it is mildly noisy while inactive. I don't understand this behavior.

Other Thoughts: Western Digital WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive is the drive I am using with it. After noticing some odd behavior I looked up the requirements. Power requirements on the HD are 12V 2.5A, this box provides 12V 2A. I would like this verified. If this solution is unacceptable please point to a better solution.

5 out of 5 eggsGood, noisy fan, bright LED.

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: This enclosure is durable. Transfer speed is very fast. I bought this particular model to support 4TB HDDs. Good ventilation.

Cons: The fan is noisy. I bought a quiet 80mm SilentX fan and did some soldering and modding to replace the original. Also LEDs are very bright and not good to have it in your bedroom, you could tape the LEDs with black tapes.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but a PITA

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: It works and has both USB3 and eSATA.

Cons: On USB3 you can't just switch it off and on as needed because then it does not mount correctly requiring a reboot of your computer just to get it to mount.

Other Thoughts: I can only hope it works better on eSATA. Sadly this is normal for Rosewill. They really suck as making anything with a PCB.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat! Low noise, fast, somewhat annoying lights.

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: Fan does make some noise, but unless your ear is up to it, its almost inaudible. Using just the USB 3.0 port on my laptop this blows away all my expectations. Fan can be turned off if peferred. Heavier than expected, better build quality, fan keeps drive cool, etc.

Cons: Light cannot be turned off. I have this sitting behind my laptop so it doesn't bother me, but I can see it being annoying. Not a good Idea to keep it on its side as seen i the picture. Doesn't come with a stand or rubber feet. Not a problem for $36 I can get my own, but who thougth of putting this on its side really?

Other Thoughts: Ran out of space for steam on my laptop's harddrive. Don't use my old desktop much anymore so I took it out (Seagate 1TB). Tossed this together, thought It would be about the speed of a thumb drive. Nope, with about 30 addons, Garrysmod loads maps just as fast as my laptop drive (might even be faster). Freed up 500+ gigs on my laptop drive just in time for Steam summer sales. 9/10 Would reccomend.

5 out of 5 eggsRosewill Rocks Once Again

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: Cheapest 3.0 USB enclosure w/fan.

This company rocks. The enclosure is actual metal (not plastic), solid, easy to install, and has a cool light...all for a really great price.

Everything I have got from them is top quality.

Cons: Wish I could toggle the light on and off

5 out of 5 eggsGood value

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: Good quality and nice looking for a fair price. Quiet and effective fan. Use with eSATA or USB 3.0 and all cables are included.

Cons: The blue LEDs are insanely bright. Others have mentioned it but you have no idea until you see them in a dark room. They really need to tone these down, I almost took an egg off for it. Some kind of base would be nice when standing them edge-wise.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these and run one each on USB 3.0 and eSATA, both of which work fine with 3TB HDDs. Would have preferred black, but the silvers were $10 a pop cheaper.

Installation or removal of a drive involves 10 (yes, TEN) screws. Not a big deal, but you won't be using these for quick-swap applications.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

This review is from: Rosewill RX-358 U3C SLV - Silver External 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure - Aluminum & Plastic, SATA I / II, USB 3.0 & eSATA

Pros: I've got this enclosure to use it for the Intel SSD 730. Ok, that was a mistake since I should have got a 2.5in version instead but with some spacers it works fine. :)

Great price due to being on sale, and has eSATA(3.0G) and USB 3.0 for blazingly fast connections.

Cons: So far none.
