5 out of 5 eggsWorks Excellent, annoying fan

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Strong design, easy to install and change.

Cons: The fan on mine is noisy. It's adjustable in speed, but that doesn't help it much with noise sometimes. Eventually it stops, but will start again.

Other Thoughts: This is a well designed case with great ventalation. The sound of the fan being noisy is not enough for me to take down the rating though, as it does it's job with keeping the air flow. Great product and would highly recommend if you don't mind the fan sounding loud sometimes like there's something hitting it. I've tried adjusting the tightness of the screws for that, it doesn't make a difference. Still recommend you buy!

2 out of 5 eggsHidden limitation

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: This enclosure works well with my SATA drives 1TB, 2TB Samsung and Seagate both. Support USB3.0 and eSATA connections. Small problem that I had was rattled fan. Rosewill sent me new one to replace broken.

Cons: But I got biggest problem with this enclosure when I bought a new ASUS RT-AC68 router. This router has USB 3 and USB 2 slots that work with any of my USB sticks, with WD MYBOOK with no problems. But no work with this enclosure.
Rosewill customer service stated that this is their hardware limitation. AsMedia chipset of the enclosure doesn't work with ASUS controller.
Very disappointed.

Other Thoughts: Rosewill must show this limitation in enclosure specification and doesn't confuse customers.

4 out of 5 eggsExternal enclosure

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: - Different design that looks better in my opinion
- Esata! forget usb, esata is the way to go if you have it!
- Usb3 i guess is a selling point
- on/off switch. Seriously, why don't everyone use these?!
- Fan! with control knob super handy
- Super nice finish on it. Feels good.

Cons: The power adapter was broken when i got my unit. Using another 2a power adapter taken from something else to power it. No big deal. docked an egg for that though.

Other Thoughts: would have liked to see a 3 pin connector for the fan... or an LED inside the fan! Make it happen rosewill!

Rosewill products have seemed to step their game up in terms of quality.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: It has really nice features; eSATA, USB 3.0, Fan speed controller, and it came with everything advertised, and has been working well since purchase.
Inexpensive, solid unit. It can be placed vertically or horizontally on a desk, or wherever it is stored. Installing a drive to this case was easy to do.

Cons: The metal mesh on the top of the unit "pops" when it's pressed down. Not a huge concern as it does not affect the usefulness of the unit, it's just a nit-picky observation with my unit.
The fan is noisy, but that's to be expected from a 80 mm fan - and the fan does not completely turn off unless the unit is off.
On the point of LEDs, the "on" LED is bright (personal opinion), and there's no HDD activity LED.

Other Thoughts: I bought it to use as a back-up storage enclosure, and in short, it does what I need it to do. No problems as of yet, but I'll be sure to update if anything goes awry. I've been using it off and on for nearly two months, and I have not tried anything other than a 3.5" mechanical HDD.

2 out of 5 eggsToo Bad, So Sad

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: I LOVE the features of these enclosures. Whoever designed them was brilliant. Simple, quick install, but does everything you need it to do.

Cons: What I am not impressed with is how often they fail. I have owned 3 of this very model, and two have failed. I have also owned three or four of another Rosewill model, with no failures. (The one with all the screws)

Other Thoughts: I am probably going to buy enclosure from Rosewill to replace the one that failed last night. I am also about to go through the RMA process, so we'll see hwo that works...

1 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 doesn't work

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Fast when it works.
It has a fan to keep the hard drive cool.

Cons: The fan is loud, even at the lowest setting, and you can't turn it off.
Can't turn the LED off.
The enclosure doesn't always work over USB 3.0.

Other Thoughts: I've had about 4 replacements of various Rosewill HDD enclosures for different reasons, and the USB 3.0 doesn't work properly on any of them. If you leave the enclosure powered off and plugged into the computer over USB 3.0, it won't turn the hard drive on when you turn the enclosure on. You have to wait anywhere from 5-30 minutes for the hard drive to spin up, and then you have to power cycle the enclosure again.

I have tested this on 3 different computers running Windows 8 or Windows 7, and it does the same thing on all of them. I've had four replacements, and each one has done the exact same thing. I'd return it if I could, but it's too late for that, and I've already spent enough money on shipping the previous ones back anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsFreaking awesome

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Inexpensive, versatile

Cons: Could use a caddy that could handle 2.5" notebook drives.

Other Thoughts: The "Con" is a minor quibble. I actually stuck a 2.5 " notebook drive into one, being careful about physical contact and shorting, and it worked just fine (laptop failed, I needed to rescue the contents of the drive). But I would have felt a lot better if the caddy had holes to mount a 2.5" drive onto as well.

This unit is just awesome, I've now been using it for five or six months, and had no problems whatsoever with it.

2 out of 5 eggsNo bueno

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: It's an external enclosure, assuming you need one. USB 3 speeds are faster than the utual USB 2 speeds (benchmarks at the very bottom). Variable fan control is a nice idea. Easy to use & install a drive. My ASUS motherboard picked it up right away in USB 3 mode. ESATA required me to use Disk Manager to see the hdd, as expected and explained in the included paper instructions.

Cons: Unacceptable fan issues on my unit. At slow speeds (estimate of 25% or less of speed), I have a horrible rattle/shake/vibration that only goes away once the speed is ramped up. This is an instant return for a replacement unit. The shipping box and product box were both undamaged, so it was probably bad from the get-go. While the fan doesn't vibrate once I crank the speed up, it does get to be a fairly noisy hum compared to my quiet PC, and it's easily the loudest part of my environment. The extra speed also doesn't seem to really move much air, so I'm not sure if the fan is even worth it. This may be due to my faulty fan, however, so take that with a grain of salt.
The cables aren't the longest. Good for getting you a foot or two from the case, but you probably won't be running this from the floor to the opposite side of your desk very easily. Also, you HAVE to run the fan. It'd be nice if you could turn it all the way down to an "off" setting. I would also have preferred to have some sort of included 2.5" bracket for futureproofing since I'm in the process of moving all of my machines & drives over to SSD.

Other Thoughts: I decided to push my review to two weeks since receiving the unit to see if my issues would resolve themselves with 24/7 usage. They didn't. In the name of science, and since the enclosure was pretty worthless to me anyway with the fan issue, I decided to open this up to see what was up with the fan. The first thing I noticed after opening it was the little blue Quality Control passed sticker on the inside. The fan is a no-name black sticker only brand, so I assume it's also a Rosewill special. It's a thin fan, so it won't be easily replaced by any old fan you have laying around. The good news is that the enclosure still works with the fan removed. I would recommend screwing in any drives you put in it, otherwise removing them is VERY hard since there's no good way to grip the edges of the drive to pull it out. If the drive is fastened in, it's very easy to remove. Something to consider if you are going to use this out in the field and plan on swapping drives frequently. Cable is a standard (although I don't see it much in the real world) USB 3 Type B connection to the enclosure. If you have regular plain-old USB 3 cables laying around, they won't work here.

Test was on my home server (ASUS P8H67-M EVO motherboard, Windows 8) copying a 40.1 GB Avatar Blu-Ray M2TS file. Speed was averaged out over three runs.

USB 3.0 - 65.5 MB/sec (514.4 mbps) to a Samsung HD203WI (5400 RPM)
ESATA - 38.5 MB/sec (308 mbps) to a Samsung HD203WI (5400 RPM).

I can't explain this unexpected slow ESATA speed, so I thought I'd try it with another drive.

USB 3.0 - 66.8 MB/sec (534.4 mbps) to a Samsung HD204UI (5400 RPM)
ESATA - 40.5 MB/sec (324 mbps) to a Samsung HD204UI (5400 RPM)

Again, the really slow ESATA speed. My only explanation is possibly a compatibility problem between the enclosure and my board's Marvell 88SE6111 ESATA controller or just a bad board on the enclosure in addition to the bad fan. I do not have any ESATA problems with my Rosewill external dock.

Summing up - would I recommend this unit? I can't say. My unit was bad. The USB 3.0 speeds are decent, and the enclosure is very easy to use and set up. If you get one with a good fan and ESATA speeds, then it's probably worth your while. I don't usually have any problems with Rosewill products, and I own quite a few, so I probably just got the one-in-a-hundred dud that pops up from time to time.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works for what it is.

This review is from: Rosewill METAS BLACK Rigid Aluminum Body and ABS plastic top cover 3.5" USB3.0 & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: Seems relatively well built. Comes with both the option of USB 3.0 and eSATA which is always a nice touch. This particular unit includes an 80mm extremely thin fan mounted above the HDD in the enclosure. The fan is also controlled manually by a little dial on the back panel of the enclosure. Even at max speed, the fan is by no means annoying in regards to noise level.

The chassis is fairly well constructed. Much better than what I have seen from other Rosewill products I've tested in the past. The drive is mounted to a hotswap bay of sorts that you remove, install the HDD and then slide in to place. This makes changing hard drives out really easy. I like this feature a lot.

There is a blue power/activity light on the front that isn't terribly blinding but bright enough that you can see it even in full day time.

I like the design of the case overall and that it also comes with a (cheap) stand to hold up the drive.

eSATA and USB 3.0 cables were both included in the box.

Cons: The enclosure still has it's drawbacks this is for sure. First off, when sliding the drive tray back into the SATA port inside the unit it is really tricky to get it lined up and into position properly. I felt like I was going to break the backplane several times.

The mesh over the fan is CHEAP and really flimsy. I accidentally bent it several times just picking it up. I wouldn't recommend using this on the go a lot for fear of that mesh binding up the fan.

Even with the fan on max (while it was quiet) I wasn't really able to tell a difference in drive temperature or that it was even moving much air. Points off for that for sure.

The vertical stand it comes with is flimsy and cheap. However, it works and that is really what counts so, not much of a con there.

I'm not a fan of the wall wart power unit for this enclosure and would rather it be a little bigger to include the PSU in the chassis or use something like and in-line power supply for better plugging in convenience.

Unfortunately, speeds aren't blindingly fast with the enclosure. Running a Seagate 1TB Barracuda drive I was only able to hit about 55 MB/s read on Crystal DiskMark while my other enclosure pulls close 60 with the same drive. Sort of sad but not the end of the world. This is true for both the eSATA and USB3 protocols for my unit. Perhaps other units are doing better.

Other Thoughts: It's a nice enclosure for the price....I just wish they would have put a little more effort into it.
