2 out of 5 eggsNot working as described

Pros: Nice looks, comes with all cables

Cons: Couldn't get the eSATA connection to work at all. The eSATA capability was the main reason I purchased this dock. No matter what I tried I could not get my PC to "see" the drive attached via the esata connection.

Other Thoughts: Disappointment in the quality of this Rosewill product.

3 out of 5 eggsFrequent unexplained disconnects? It's the power supply

Pros: Solid construction
The best dust filter flaps around (most others don't have full coverage)
Eject buttons (believe it or not some don't have these at all)
Heavy enough to stay put empty
USB 3.0 and eSATA connectivity
Easy to activate physical power button
Good indicator lights

Cons: *Power supply causing disconnects after 18 months or so* - Solution below
No independent power button for each drive
No offline cloning feature

Other Thoughts: I've had this dock for about a year and a half and I have used it quite heavily at my job. It has worked very well for a long time, but is now giving me trouble when copying files or doing other normal operations involving hard drives. It seems to happen more often when I have two drives inserted. During a file copy or other such activity, the entire enclosure will briefly power off and back on again. This of course kills any file copy that might be going on, forcing me to start wherever it left off or at the beginning. It is quite frustrating as I often leave a backup running for an hour or more while running around the office doing other tasks. Coming back to my desk to find a failed backup sucks big time.

As a last resort, I tried swapping out the power supply for one with the same specs (12V 3A) and it has been working flawlessly since I did. I did two full surface scans on a couple of drives, copied over 100 GB of files from drive 1 to drive 2 in the dock, and cloned a drive in the dock from a disk image on my computer. I'd say I solved the problem. If your dock is doing the same thing mine was, see if you can find a power supply that matches and try it out. It worked for me.

3 out of 5 eggsNo 4TB capacity

Pros: The dock functions quite well for all of the drives used - Samsung, Toshiba, WD, Hitachi, Seagate - at any capacity, but...(see cons)
Speed was usually around 50Mbs

Cons: DOES NOT SUPPORT 4TB DRIVES

Other Thoughts: Dock was RMAd for Newegg store credit.
Good job Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid, 2-Port SATA Dock

Pros: Cheap! Effective! eSATA & USB 3.0!

Both ports work well, even in Ubuntu 10.04 on an old IBM with legacy USB 2.0 ports. Both drives were accessible. Excellent bay for data recovery!

Cons: It didn't have my coffee ready when I got to the office. It also forgot the donuts.

I can forgive the coffee oversight, but not the donuts!

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent, budget, dual-bay enclosure. I've not had a chance to use with eSATA, but intend to in the future.

If your BIOS is not configured properly, or the motherboard vendor does screwy things with the setup when using eSATA, that is not a fault of this device. Your board _should_ have the SATA controller setup for AHCI, and the port set to removable, if possible, before you use this on eSATA. If your BIOS is not currently set this way, and you change it, you'll almost definitely cause Windows to BSOD. See advice on how to change your MSAHCI driver below, and elsewhere.

Better yet, use the device on a USB 3.0 port, and skip the hassle. Definitely use USB 3.0, because USB 2 devices are unable to transfer faster than 30~35MB/s. That limitation is a function of how USB 2 works.

The plain facts if you use USB 2:
~10 hours per 1 TiB of data you want to transfer if only one device is on USB. If source and destination are both USB 2, and also on the same controller, double that time estimate. Ouch.
Ouch.

1 out of 5 eggscorrupted 3 of my drives

Pros: -none

Cons: Ive never had a hard drive fail. After owning this dock for a couple months my time machine drive died. (didnt think the dock was at fault)

Today (now a few months later) my new time machine drive had to be formatted cause it wasnt readable...ok it happens no problem.

Go to fire up my project drive with all my media and files and that drive is completely unreadable and remained unreadable after disk warrior and data rescue. Luckily I had a backup with about 90% of the data.

When looking at the physical drives and swapping them in and out of the dock, i noticed they had switched names and directories one drive had populated to the other (although there was no data in them)

All in all, this dock was a black hole for my drives and I cant comprehend what happened. Throwing it away. Which is sad because i always thought Rosewill had good products.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for a few days

Pros: inexpensive.
holds two drives
ESATA and USB

Cons: Worked for only a few days and now it only the power light is lit and the drives don't even spin up. I would look for a different enclosure to purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsGood product with serious technical hurdles

Pros: Toaster!
Easy to add or remove drives.
Screwless

Cons: Difficult to configure.
Documentation and website are useless.

Other Thoughts: I recently picked this hard drive toaster up on Shell Shocker as I upgraded the drives in my NAS and didn't want the old drives to sit around uselessly. I had hoped the setup would be a snap, but as so many computer things, there's always a gotcha. A couple of things to consider before purchasing this product:: If your eSata controller does not support port multiplication (most don't), you will only be able to use a single slot when connected via the eSata cable. If your SATA hard disks are currently configured in IDE mode, this product will not function. It won't beep, it won't error out, it just flat won't detect, even via usb. You have to switch to AHCI mode in the BIOS, which, if you aren't prepared ahead of time (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci -> Start key = 0), will render your windows system unbootable. Changing your system from IDE to AHCI will almost certainly force your copy of Windows to reactivate, and has the fun side effect of making your hard drives ejectable. Fortunately I had a spare USB 3 card around, as USB 2.0 speeds are unacceptable for this type of product, but if you find yourself without spare ports and wish to use both slots, you might think about picking up a controller card the same time you purchase this product. Also, when I added this product to the chain, the BIOS reorganized my boot sequence; just something else to watch out for!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product!

Pros: This dock is great for laptop owners, or anyone who needs external / swappable drives. Works great for drive cloning or whatever you need and is very versatile with both e-sata and USB 3.0, and 2 sata slots.

Cons: The eject buttons are a bit flimsy with 3.5" drive, but it isn't necessary to use them to remove the drive. (I was hesitant to even put this as a con.)

Other Thoughts: Do you need a drive dock? Then buy this!

1 out of 5 eggsPower Switch in Back

Pros: Fast unit.
Aluminum case.
Dual connectivity

Cons: Power switch in back of unit?!?!?

Other Thoughts: Seriously Rosewill, why put the power switch in back? It's much safer to turn off one of these for removal and insertion of the drive, yet you make the power switch harder to get to! It needs to be on top in front!
