USB 3.0 2.5" Slim Dual Slot RAID Enclosure

What Does it Look Like?

Why Do I Need It?

  • If you want to speed up your disk speed
  • If you need to combine two HDDs into one at ease
  • If you need a secure data protection

How Does it Work?

Rosewill
Rosewill

Raid0 Speed up HDD

Speed mode distributes access across all hard disks, also called striping (equivalent to RAID0). RAID0 presents the best data speed but no data redundancy. RAID0 storage mode accelerates hard disk operating speed by using many disks in parallel.

Rosewill

RAID Secure HDD

RAID storage mode stores all data in duplicate on separate drives to protect against data loss due to failure. One drive mirrors the other at all times, equivalent to RAID1. Every write operation goes to both drives. RAID1 provides the highest level of data protection for critical data but halves the amount of storage capacity because all data must be stored twice.

Rosewill

JBOD Combine HDD

JBOD Storage mode concatenates a series of physical hard drives as a single large volume, resulting in a seamless expansion or virtual volume beyond the physical limitations of singularly connected hard drives.

Rosewill

2LUN Function Mode

The 2LUN storage mode enables each hard drive to be seen separately.

3 out of 5 eggsdoesn't really work with 2TB drives

Pros: Compact. Works well with 1 TB drives.

Cons: I didn't notice in the description that it does not support 2 TB drives. It works, in as much as you can put two in and see 2 TiB in RAID 0 or JBOD mode, but not the full capacity of the 2 drives. In the independent configuration, drives show up as one device with 2 LUNs, not really 2 separate USB drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: least expensive raid enclosure I could find atm.

I like rosewill.

Option for Mirror RAID

Cons: buggy setup.
costs more than I would like

Other Thoughts: Now that I got it working, I am very happy with this device. I have installed 2x Samsung 1TB 2.5 HDDs inside as RAID1 Mirror. I wanted to have a reliable backup drive and this is the best, lest expensive way to accomplish that. Not to mention it helped me make use of some drives I had acquired over the years that I had replaced with ssds.

like another reviewer said, before you power on and connect usb,, hold the reset button, then power it on while holding,, look at the front lights, will quicly turn from purple to blue while holding,, means 5 seconds is up, you can release,, and will become purple again. I suggest wait about 10 seconds and then plug the usb in to the computer. Your computer should ask you to initialize the disk, go to disk management if it doesn't. Even though on Windows 10, I chose MBR, not GPT partition style,, A) because I don't plan to have more than 4 partitions, B) I may need to use this on older computers as well.

I did notice after repeated attempts doing this,, it never reinitialized but everything stayed the same. I redid it a few tines because it stopped transferring after about 15 seconds several times,, but now it doesn't.

Maybe it was the reboot? Its working perfect now, that's all that matters.

I edited this review to change to 5 stars,, I bought 2 of these, use as mirrors, they work on multiple computers,, EOS. thanks, rosewill for the eggblaster special of $15 each I paid.

1 out of 5 eggsReally sad the drive showed up DOA.

Pros: The specs on this unit looked good enough to solve a simple problem I have.

Cons: This unit in person is a bit on the cheap side. The door closures could of been a better design solution that actually work as intended.

It's really a shame as Newegg's house brand Rosewell is usually pretty good piece of gear at a decent price point and works.

Other Thoughts: Seriously I would not recommend this to anyone if this drive is an indication of the quality control from the vendor Rosewell and Newegg used to get this item.

3 out of 5 eggsHad to remove front doors to seat the drives correctly

Pros: Once you get it working, it works great.

Cons: Drives do not seat properly

Other Thoughts: Out of the box my slim SSD's would not seat in the connectors properly, I had to remove the front doors by pushing the hinge pins out, and then I noticed that the left connector wasn't even centered...so it took some maneuvering to get the drive to seat correctly. Once I did that I was able to use it as explained in the manual.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well.

Pros: Works good on both slots.

Cons: Nothing much to complain, if I were to nitpick, the construction is not as robust as other but for the money completely fair.

3 out of 5 eggsNeed to adjust previous review

Pros: RAID1 at the touch of a switch - BUT...

Cons: The door/levers are very poor at seating the drives in their connectors. I was having problems with the computer locking up during some big-file transfers. It took me hours to figure it out as I had to turn off the power to regain control of the PC. MANY TIMES.

I replaced the drives with two others and same issue. Little files not so much of a problem, but big files it would lock everything solid and even the mouse cursor would disappear.

I decided to see what was on the two drives I had removed and instead of the data being identical on both one had some old stuff on it. They should have both been identical.

I turned the unit off and carefully opened the front lever/door just a tweak and one drive was kinda loose and flopped around a little when poked.

Using a plastic ruler I pushed the drive and it moved forward into the connector with a clunk. The other drive was seated OK and didn't move with the ruler. I plugged it in and powered up and no more problems.

I shut it down and removed both drives and then tried to install them using just the lever/doors to push them into the connectors as it was designed to do. Same issue, one drive did NOT go all the way in. This time it was the other side.

It seems the doors fail for two reasons, both poor design (I am a Mechanical Engineer) The first is that the door is not rigid enough to RELIABLY push the drive into the connector. It bows the door slightly and even pushing on that is still not enough to fully seat it.

The second issue is that the entire thing has been made about a 1/16" too long so even with the door flattened by pushing, it is still short of pushing the drive all the way in.

How do I know this? I removed the pins form the doors and tossed them away along with the front panel plastic shroud, keeping just the metal removal levers. I can now push the drives in visibly farther than they would go with the front plastic in place. To remove the drives I can grip the ends of the metal levers with needle nose pliers and pull.

It appears that the aluminum extrusion body is being cut a little too long. Probably a quality control thing. So, I have dropped my enthusiasm level to three eggs as the device works great when the drives are seated correctly. Just annoying that I had to waste several hours figuring it out and making the fix.

So, by all means get one, but remove the doors and manually push the drives into their connectors and all will be well.

Other Thoughts: I recently wrote this review...

The firmware needs to have a Time-Out for drive read/write errors and release the process so that it doesn't lock up the computer waiting on it forever when something unexpected happens.

4 out of 5 eggsAwsome and 25-bucks

Pros: Read the Manual!
Setting up is easy, set switch on back to "off" and do NOT plug in the USB, select the mode of the 4 available using slide switch. Be warned, the first and second options JBOD and 2LUN will look at the disk without doing anything. The two RAID options will clear the Partition so if you have data, then do NOT try a RAID option unless you don't care about the data.

Cons: Dropped one egg for these issues.
Manual is confusing, poorly written in places and the pics are not really representative of what you need to do.
Slide switch for mode selection is VERY difficult to slide to the second and third positions. Both switches on the back could be a 1/16" longer as it is easy for Mode to stick between JBOD and RAID0. The reset button is a perfect height.

Other Thoughts: I am using it in RAID1 mode with two 1TB HDDs and it was so easy to get working. Only one of the two drives appear in Drive Manager, AND I was able to use VeraCrypt (VC) and set it up as an encrypted drive. I mounted it in VC then copied some **big** files to it. Super fast. I then shut it down and took each drive out and checked them individually using a SATA adapter and both had identical data and both were encrypted. So easy I am buying another one in case this one dies. At $24.99 and free shipping awesome equipment and deal.

Just a happy customer, no connections or freebies here.

4 out of 5 eggsRoswill RX200R

Pros: Compact enclosure
Smallest footprint
Easy to install

Cons: Does not accommodate SSDs without special mounting hardware. ( not provided)

Other Thoughts: If you're crafty, you can make your own hardware to mount SSD's, otherwise I would not recommend this for SSD use

4 out of 5 eggsNice little enclosure

Pros: Good Speed in 2LUN mode (seeing the drives separately). Have not tried RAID or JBOD. Pretty easy to set up. If using in 2LUN mode like me, just plug/unplug like you would a thumb drive. Great product for those extra laptop/PS3 hard drives laying around!

Cons: Designed for non-slim drives so be prepared with a shim or trim piece if you have slim drives. BE CAREFUL when closing the "lid", make sure the drive is seated in the connector correctly!

Other Thoughts: I had an issue with the first unit. Rosewill was VERY easy to deal with and very quick to replace it. They absolutely wanted to make sure I was satisfied. This is a lower cost product but they treated me like I spent much more. Very happy with Rosewill. Thanks!!
