5 out of 5 eggsBuy it while it lasts!

Pros: Fast Swapping, Reliable, Easy to use, PNP, Power Off reachable, Sturdy

Cons: Heat Dissipation, After YEARS of use USB Cable gets loose but not bad!, The STUPID Plastic Key!

Other Thoughts: I owned an ACOM external for over a decade, this replaced it VERY well, the acom had rubber shock absorbers but was strictly IDE.

I am Confounded at the fact that eagles limits capacity on all future models, I ran 1 - 3 tb's on this puppy and capacity should NEVER matter.

Many good models and ideas vanish for the less functional ones!

4 out of 5 eggsVery Pleased

Pros: To begin, it holds a SATA drive quite nicely. While it relies on passive cooling, so far I have not had any problems with the enclosure.

One really nice thing is the tool-less setup. Once I got the front panel open (see cons), I installed my 3 year old 1TB drive (that originally was in an enclosure by itself, and cost 350 bucks) inside of a minute, then closed the panel, powered the drive enclosure and connected the USB to my Netbook. Overall write speed is decent across a USB bus, and reads are smooth.

I really like the blue light as well. It has two halves to it, one for power (bottom when using the stand), and the other half is for disk activity (top). It is not too bright, nor would it keep me up at night if I would leave it running overnight.

Cons: The key depicted in both the quick install guide and the pictures never made it into my box. This is only a slight nag, as I was able to get the enclosure open with a very small screwdriver I had lying around.

This may be stretching the facts a bit, but I could probably cook an egg on the top if I waited long enough, using a pad of aluminum foil. While the drive used to be in a case that had almost no airflow, it still will get rather warm wherever it is.

Other Thoughts: I do think I will buy a second unit for a 2TB drive I have in a storage unit, and will just need to remember to let both drives get some sleep every 8 hours or so.

Also, my box came with a tiny packet of screws that have nowhere to go, so I wonder if QC grabbed the wrong baggie when packing up my box. It is not a major issue, as I can just use that mini screwdriver to open it if I need to. I may contact Eagle Tech and see if they can send a key out to me.

1 out of 5 eggsNever worked

Pros: Simple and easy to use. No screws.

Cons: Never worked. End of story. The first one I received came with the wrong cable and didn't work with the one I had so I RMA'd it and it's replacement didn't work either. The power light glowed on both so I know it wasn't a power issue. With the way it's designed I could never tell if the drive was making contact with the internal ports. That might or might not be part of the problem. All I know is that it didn't work. The hard drives wouldn't spin. I didn't care to try a third because of the wait and all the hassle so I switched to a cheaper one that works.

Other Thoughts: The one egg goes to NewEgg for taking it back without charging a restocking fee and for providing a prepaid shipping label. All you have to do is the call them and ask nicely.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent for the price

Pros: Great enclosure. Easy to insert and remove the hard drive. Very quiet since there are no fans. Dont know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Nice, solid aluminum enclosure. Might buy another one if this one works like it should. This enclosure does support up to 2tb HD with sata I/II and only has USB 2.0.

Cons: Enclosure does get warm. I have a 2tb hard drive at 5400rpm so dont really worry about HD burnout. The key that most people complain about is really not a problem. I just taped it to the enclosure to keep it from disappearing.

Other Thoughts: This is a pretty decent enclosure for up to 2tb HD's with low RPM. I wouldn't recommend any drive greater than that speed (RPM) with this enclosure. If you are concerned about heat, then get an enclosure with a fan. Those will be louder. FYI.

3 out of 5 eggsok for a while

Pros: mine lasted 2.5 years before failing. I thought the hdd crashed but tried it in a new enclosure and my data was safe! good performance for the 2.5 years, but thought it would last longer.

Cons: wouldn't have expected it to fail after a couple years of faithful service.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent, but so / so

Pros: Cheap in price, and a lot of storage..

Cons: Not much of a looker and had one go out in less then a year and not much longer for the second one but out of warranty at that point.

Other Thoughts: Its okay...

2 out of 5 eggs1 died after 6 months, 1 died after 2 years

Pros: Easy to get the drives in and out...really nice... Looks good....Does the job when it does the job.

Cons: I've had 3 of these by now...over a 2.5 year period. The sliding caddy is a nice touch but on one unit the problem seemed to be that the drive was not going in all the way...some fiddling got it working for awhile, only to have it fail again. Eventually the board itself went.

Just had another one where the board went dead...normally the power supplies on these things are the first to go (and I believe this did happen on one of them but I don't want to slander it further).

Other Thoughts: That being said, I was able to get mileage out of this unit for more than a year (give or take and one RMA later). I've tried plenty of enclosures and, like I say, usually the power supply is what goes first but only time will tell as technology lasts longer

You'll probably be fine with this unit, given the other reviews but I will not be getting another.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap and no frills, does the job

Pros: Cheap, sturdy little case and great for being able to just drop a 3.5" drive in to quickly hook it up to a PC. By most standards, this is just another average USB/SATA bridge enclosure. It does the job but with an added bonus of being easy to swap drives with. Uses a standard barrel pin power connector, so no stupid, proprietary keyed multipin plugs. Not much bigger than the drive itself, nicely stackable and unobtrusive design.

Cons: Bright blue LEDs (I hate blue LEDs, but the docked egg is actually for the following...) Zero ventilation. The enclosure is completely solid, so the mesh on top is NOT there for ventilation. Drive will get warm. My drives don't tend to overheat, so I haven't had one burn up on me for being inside this thing. Enclosure is solid metal except for the end caps, so it does provide some sense of a heatsink passive cooling action. Not recommended for drives known to get too hot on their own without active cooling.

Other Thoughts: Was able to take the back end off and plug laptop drives into this unit. Replaced the blue LEDs with orange ones. Every drive I've thrown at this has worked, from 40GB to 500GB desktop SATA1.5 to SATA 3.0 drives, from 80GB to 320GB laptop sized drives (provided unscrew the bridge connector from the body and hook it up without putting it inside the enclosure)... haven't had any issues unless it was with the drive itself.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great hot-swap bay. My box came with not only a USB cord but an eSATA cord as well so that was a nice surprise. No fan but it radiates heat pretty well so I've never had a drive get too hot in there.

Cons: I don't mind it but some people might find the key to open the front a pain, maybe a button would've worked better.

5 out of 5 eggsI love it.

Pros: I just use the adapter part of this for data transfer/recovery in my office. It's probably had at least fifty different hard drives plugged into it and it's sturdy and solid enough that it runs absolutely fine. FYI, works on both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA HDDs.

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: I'd buy ten of these babies if I though I'd ever need another one. I've had it going for over a year and a half and it's shown me no issues. Buy one.
