4 out of 5 eggsDrive Capacity Limited

Pros: What others have said.

Cons: I don't own this enclosure, but found it while researching enclosures. Wanted to point out that the Eagle web site indicates this enclosure supports only up to 320GB drives. This is a limitation considering availability of 400GB and 500GB 2.5" drives today.

2 out of 5 eggsNot for making clones

Pros: Very well built. Feel of quality. Cool and quiet. My HP laptop recognized my WD Scoripo 320 GB HDs readily and they formatted OK.

Cons: I bought three of Eagle units to hold backups and clones of my HD. Using Acronis True Image Home 2009 v12, making either a Full Backup or Cloning a disk was intolerably slow. It literally crawled ... taking over an hour to back up 65 GB of OS/Data. This is using eSATA in VISTA on a brand new HP 17" Laptop.

All attempts to clone using my old favorite Ghost (in a DOS environment) failed very early in the clone process with an error that read: "an internal inconsistency occurred". Three different WD HDs in three different Eagle enclosures.

Based on experiences of a friend using his AZiO ENC211SU31 enclosures (also eSATA), the exact same drives in AZiO ENC211SU31 enclosures backed up from Acronis in half the time required using the Eagle units and with AZIO units, the GHOST clone process finished without error in only 1/2 hour.

I am wondering if these Eagle Enclosures have some sort of non-standard chipset. Don't do like I did ... test them thoroughly before you order mo

Other Thoughts: There are, apparently, software / computer combos with which these units work fine ... at least for certain operations. But if you plan to use these for backup and more importantly for cloning, give your first unit a thorough test ...

For me, the AZiO ENC211SU31 units perform perfectly in the exact same environment in which the Eagle units failed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little package

Pros: It doesn't require any screws to install the drive. Just pop it in and close the door. The key is in the bottom of the stand, though if for some reason you needed to open it again and you've lost the key a paperclip will suffice. Comes with all the cables you'll need. Nice carrying bag with separate compartments for the drive and the cables.

Drive runs fine with only one side of the USB power Y-cable plugged in.

Let me say this one again: no screws. Tiny little screws are a pain...this enclosure does not have any screws.

Cons: The door didn't want to close at first but eventually I got it shut. Since I don't see myself opening it again this isn't really a con.

Other Thoughts: Don't listen to the reviewer who complained about a missing eSATA to USB cable. There's no such thing. You get a cable to connect to your eSATA port, and a cable to connect to USB if you're unfortunate enough to lack an eSATA port (plus the USB power cable). That's all you get and that's all you need. Both my desktop and laptop have eSata connections - the drive worked fine with both using the included cable. If your computer doesn't have that port, well, that's not the enclosure's fault.

It's a solid enclosure that's easy to use (no screws!). Buy this one.

4 out of 5 eggsSuper case for the $$

Pros: Well-made enclosure for the price, about as easy a disk install as you could ask for, insert pin (included), open hinged cover, slide HD in, close the cover, plug in the cable(s), you've got more storage. Included pouch is a nice touch. On the whole, an outstanding buy.

Cons: eSATA to USB cable as shown on the listing not included as with previous reviewer. Will contact manufacturer to see about acquiring. A small annoyance at best.

Other Thoughts: Really pleased with quality of the unit and its' features, a tremendous value. Be aware that it may arrive without the one cable as described. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case! Just Missing SATA to eSATA Cable

Pros: Love the design and feel of the enclosure. Worked with my 500GB Samsung drive without the need for the drivers or issues. Works in Windows 7 without issue or drivers. Stays cool even with extended use. LED is not too distracting even though it's bright (In a good way) IMO. Comes with really nice accessories (Mesh bag is sweet). Runs on USB without the need of external power. Completely Tooless (Paper clip doesn't count)!!!! Really this is a great little enclosure! I look forward to more from Eagle in future.

Cons: Does not come with an SATA to eSATA cable as stated! It comes with just a eSATA to eSATA cable. This is a small issue but annoyed me because my current system doesn't have an eSATA port just and external SATA. Not deal breaker though. It took awhile but Eagle did ship out the missing cable at no charge.

Other Thoughts: They need to update the fact that the SATA to eSATA is no longer included. Not a deal breaker in the least though; especially seeing the support was pretty good, not great, but far from bad (They actually answered the phone! No automated cr@p.)

Great build quality for an enclosure so cheap for what you get and I highly recommend it. I doubt many would find any issues with it even with the missing

Thanks Eagle support for sending the cable!

PS: As someone else has stated it would be so nice if they would come up with a powered version of eSATA to eliminate the need to plug in the USB power or a combo cable. :)

5 out of 5 eggsJust perfect (with cables!!!)

Pros: Comes with the esata cables (data and power), unlike most of the ready-made esata drives I've found. I added a Western Digital WD3200BEKT drive I for $89.99. Good luck finding a decent ready-made 320GB 7200rpm 2.5" ext. drive for that money. The mesh back is better quality than I expected, with space for the cables.

Cons: A minor thing, but I wish the eSata cable and the power-from-usb cable were one unit, since they are both needed for eSata to work. But perhaps there are shielding issues?

Other Thoughts: For anyone who wants to know how USB2.0 stacks up to eSata using the above drive, here are some stats I got using HD Tune 2.55 (Vista-64bit);

USB 2.0
transfer rate: min 22.8MB/s, max 31.2MB/s, avg 25.1MB/s, Access Time 15.1ms, Burst Rate 18.8MB/s

transfer rate: min 41.4MB/s, max 83.9MB/s, avg 67.1MB/s, Access Time 14.6ms, Burst Rate 75.1MB/s

FWIW, here are stats on my stock int. sata hdd (Toshiba MK3252GSX);
transfer rate: min 12.6MB/s, max 63.7MB/s, avg 43.7MB/s, Access Time 19.6ms, Burst Rate 53.4MB/s

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Well made, very solid construction, completely screwless, clever locking mechanism, very easy to change out drives, nice clean professional look.

Cons: None that I've found. Could be a pain if you lose the little key that opens it, but a paper clip would probably do the same job in a pinch. This would be the perfect enclosure if it took IDE drives as well, but I've rarely seen decent ones that do.

Other Thoughts: I've owned a lot of various enclosures and tend to be pretty hard on them. From the moment I took this out of the box I just knew this one will last for a long time. I bought this mostly because my new laptop has an eSATA port built in and wanted to take advantage of it but it has proven to be a great overall enclosure for tech work as well (swapping drives, etc).
