3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very well made, fits drives like a glove.

Cons: Glove like fit results in no air flow to drive. After 2 hours of data transfer with a 500GB Seagate 7200.11 drive, I pulled the drive to check temperature and found the exterior surface of the hardrive to be 80C with an infrared probe. Hate to know what the internal temperature of the platters were since i couldn't even hold the drive. Never had this problem in my other Eagle enclosure.

Other Thoughts: Nice external enclosure for short use, I would be skeptical of using it continuously. I bought it knowing there were no visible vents, but I expected Eagle not to sell a product that could make your harddrive hit 80C with normal backup usage. However, I will continue buying eagle products as they are the best I have found, just be warned this runs hot!!!

5 out of 5 eggsNice Enclosure

Pros: Extremely easy to assemble. Comes with a good stand and also has feet for use without a stand.

Cons: Made entirely from plastic, which might exacerbate heat dissipation problems.

4 out of 5 eggsCould be easier to seat drives

Pros: The quick-swap capability is both the greatest strength and weakness of this enclosure. At first I thought mine was broken because my WD 640G hard drive wouldn't spin up. Found out I needed to push the drive in firmly to seat it. This is harder than it seems, because a tab at the rear swings the door up automatically as the drive is inserted, blocking your fingers during that last critical push. Once the drive is seated properly, the enclosure does work as advertised with USB 2.0 on my Gentoo Linux PC. (I don't have eSATA ports on my PC so that functionality wasn't tested.)

Cons: * The automatic door-closing tab should be removed. A better solution would be a manually closed door with a stronger spring pushing against the drive. This would make it easier to properly seat the drive and keep it seated.

* Like another reviewer said, the paperclip-thing-under-the-stand method of opening the door is a pain. A button would be a better solution.

* I also echo the reviewer who said the vertical stand is flimsy. This enclosure is more stable when left horizontal. It also looks nicer, because there are two ugly white stickers on the bottom/left side of the case.

* Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be a hard disk activity light, just a power-on light. It's hard to tell at a glance if something is happening.

Other Thoughts: Since I use external enclosures as my primary backup mechanism and rarely swap those disks, I'm going to find another enclosure with a more secure drive seating mechanism (ie screws) for that job. I'm still keeping this one for quick drive testing/swapping, because it does turn a five-minute enclosure disk mounting job into a 5 second exercise.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Value

Pros: • Simple (screw-less) installation, yet secure and reliable
• Easy to swap out drives, basically like a SATA dock but it protects the drive
• First enclosure I've had where I actually like the activity LED
• Nice packaging, and all cables are included (USB, eSATA, power)
• Smallest enclosure I've owned; just about the size of the drive itself
• Looks and feels great, really solid product

Cons: • Paperclip-like-tool (included) required to open drive bay
• Cheap stand, doesn't provide much support (I like to keep my drives upright)

Other Thoughts: This is an amazing enclosure for such a low price. I am interested to see how it holds up in the coming months/years.

5 out of 5 eggsPERFECT!

Pros: This is a great enclosure. The drive fits very securely and does not flop around. Very quiet and does not generate a lot of heat. I currently have it mated with a WD 640 GB drive. Solid product for a great price!

Cons: I had a little trouble getting Windows to recognize it at first. The problem was that when I closed the drive door, it did not push the drive all the way into its connectors. I had to open the drive door and push the drive back a tad more with my fingers. All was good then. Also, the inlcuded USB 2.0 cable is very short. Maybe a foot long...

Other Thoughts: If you intend on using the vertical stand, there is a tool underneath the base to open the drive door. If not, you need a paperclip or something.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet!

Pros: I love this thing! True to form, the drive just slides in and locks into place once you flip up and squeeze closed the lid. No clanking about whatsoever, held the drive very securely inside and when shook I couldn't hear anything! No tools and seems extremely well-built. Haven't tried the eSATA yet but I got a sustained 21-24MB/s over USB2 for 13 hours straight to a 1TB drive, and it didn't heat up much at all.

Cons: I would recommend modifying the lid with a button or something so that you don't have to keep a paperclip around to pop open the front. Not a real big con but hey, tool-less is tool-less, right?

Other Thoughts: Love this thing. Eagletech is now my favorite enclosure vendor.
