5 out of 5 eggsPerfect external solution for PATA 2.5 HDD

Pros: I looked around at all the options others feature. But, by far Eagle Mesh Ext. Enclosure had exactly what I was looking for ex. USB powered, mesh for better cooling and slimmest one out there. Was easy to insert HDD and assembled in minutes. Plugged in and whalla, hdd recognized, formatted to FAT32, loaded 125GB worth of movies, plugged into PS3 and bam son!!...Done

Cons: Yeah...screws are small, ok screw driver. But how cares if your a tech you'd have your own nifty set anyway, Right??

Other Thoughts: I GIVE THIS A FAT A+ for quality and pricing.

4 out of 5 eggsComparison to Vantec & Nippon Labs

Pros: IDE connector. Works fine. Vented cover keeps drive cool and looks cool.

Cons: IDE connector, does not work with SATA drive. Does not come with carry pouch, which I actually find very useful, as I can stuff the drive and the cable into the pouch to keep the cable from getting lost.

Other Thoughts: I've tried 3 different enclosures now, this, Vantec and Nippon Labs and they all have worked fine. This one is very similar to Nippon Labs with the mesh cover. If you like the style but need SATA, try the Nippon Labs for about the same price.

4 out of 5 eggsSlow enclosure with excellent ventilation supports Linux and S.M.A.R.T.

Pros: * Inexpensive, yet has robust build quality
* Good longevity (lasted over a year so far and is still working properly)
* Excellent ventilation for highly effective heat dissipation
* Fully Linux compatible (kernel 2.6 or later)
* Supports S.M.A.R.T. properly
* Supports drives needing more than 0.5 Amps via supplied USB "Y" power cable
* Compatible with "regular" USB cable having a mini-USB connector for drives that need 0.5 Amps or less, so it can be connected to a computer using only one USB port and still work properly
* Easy to use and assemble
* Blue activity light is bright, yet not too bright
* Lightweight
* Aesthetically attractive

Cons: * Speed maxes out at 32 MB/s (minus 1 egg) due to using JMicron chipset
* Supplied USB "Y" power cable uses two USB ports instead of just one
* Allows dust to accumulate on the installed drive's circuit board
* Although very unlikely to occur, the steel mesh could allow the drive inside to be damaged by statitic electricity discharge

Other Thoughts: * Supplied USB cable is too long for a drive that is likely to be positioned near a laptop or netbook (not listed as a "Con" because this is a preference and not an objective fact)
* Buyers should expect to need a jeweler's phillips screwdriver (like those in Newegg Item# N82E16899196018) to assemble this enclosure

5 out of 5 eggsgreat deal for the price

Pros: Great price, solid construction, looks good. I love that only one cable is needed for both signal and power.

Cons: tiny screws don't always go back in well after drive is added

4 out of 5 eggsIt works for me

Pros: It works fine. Looks good.

Cons: A little snug fitting.

Other Thoughts: Wish the case was a tad smaller in size. It's a little wider than a Vantec enclosure I own. And noticeably bigger than a newer portable Toshiba hard drive I purchased. But it pretty much stays in a drawer as back up so I don't look at it much anyway.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job - looks good

Pros: - Works
- Looks good
- Low price

Cons: ...no included 2.54mm jumper cap? How could they not drop a jumper or two into this? Now I have to purchase a jumper for my IDE drive (since it will no longer be the primary drive). ...how many folks kept their old IDE drive jumper caps!!! :-)

Other Thoughts: This is a great product. However, I gave this 4 eggs because I simultaneously purchased a very similar SATA product from Nippon Labs (same price) and that came with: (a) a small screwdriver, (b) a 'leathery' transport pouch, (c) black inserts to go inside the mesh to obscure and protect the top and bottom of the drive. Also, there was no branding on the Nippon Labs product. I think the lack of an off-brand logo on the cover of the unit makes it more attractive (you can easily peal off the UL/FCC stickers on the bottom).

5 out of 5 eggsRepurpose an old laptop drive

Pros: Very compact, slim design, attractive appearance, works as expected. Basically a plastic frame with the connectors and circuit board at one end, and two metal mesh cover plates, the bottom one already attached. You can see the drive through the mesh. Two LEDs, blue pilot and red flashes during access.

Cons: Those tiny screws, other reviewers are not kidding. You'll need a #0 Philips driver, not supplied. The screw holes in the plastic frame are not tapped, so you will need to use judicious force and care to attach the top plate. No insulation between drive and cover plates, I felt obliged to cut a slip of paper to lay on the circuit-board side of the drive to insulate it from the bottom plate.

Other Thoughts: Simple, minimalist design, no nonsense. Cool running, ventilation not an issue, but no protection from liquids, would be a serious clean-up job if it gets wet. There is no screw connection to drive, but it is not a case you will want to swap spare drives in and out of.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, cheap unit

Pros: Slick, simple case. It works great and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Cons: TINY SCREWS! Best have a small screwdriver at hand. The metal mesh's corners like to stick to cloth if not tightened properly.

Other Thoughts: I am personally happy with it. I purchased it to replace an old enclosure that died on me, and it's as good, in some ways better, than my old one.
