Dependable
- Pros: Very dependable. Been using it for a year in eSATA RAID1 and have not had any issues with it. The trransfer speed is good and the RAID1 has been tested several times by removing drives and I haven't lost any data.
- Cons: The RAID switch issue metioned earlier does have a leaflet that comes with the instruction book that tells about the miss information and the correct configuration, although it is kinda of a no-brainer.
- Other Thoughts: Fan could be a bit quieter, but is not really that loud unless there is absolutely no other noise in the room. I work in a loud office so it isn't noticable.
Unstable on XP
- Pros: Drives slide in and seat smoothly when the door closes (other toolless enclosures I have sometimes don't seat properly without shenanigans).
- Cons: Unstable running as USB on Windows XP in JBOD mode. Drives would disappear in the middle of operations, causing NTFS delayed write warnings and other failures.
Eventually caused Explorer to lock up and forced me to hard reboot (corrupting files on other drives).
I have other enclosures that work fine.
It Works
- Pros: USB works great. Nice aluminum case. Sata drives slide right in to bays. Fan speed is good - auto sensing would be better but that would add to the cost. Simple to understand dip switches are used to configure raid in the unit. No in PC/Server processing used to run the RAID. For the price this is the best raid 1 enclosure available.
- Cons: The user manual, not bad assuming your already experienced with RAID initialization but not for the noob. Drive bay doors hinge should be better, there to much side movement for comfort - time will tell.
- Other Thoughts: I am an IT consultant, i use these drive bays as backup drives for small offices. I have used them for about a year now as of 10/23/09. Used in 10 small offices so far. The Raid 1 is great for maintaining a consistent incremental backup over many disks. the price is right for an small office on a small budget or the home user.
