Introducing the MB561US-4S-1 Quad Bay SATA External Enclosure featuring USB and eSATA Port Multiplier (eSATA Port Multiplier Card Required), and newly added User Defined Fan Settings with Smart Cooling Technology. The MB561US-4S-1 includes all the standard features. A single e-SATA port provides a direct, single connection and flexible options for advanced users. With a port multiplier e-SATA connection, you can either connect to a port multiplier JBOD adapter to access four drives via one e-SATA connection, or connect to a port multiplier RAID controller card. This is convenient for those who do video editing through Mac or PC and wants configurations of RAID 5 settings for increased storage capacities and blazing fast transfer speeds.

The additional USB connection allows for quick hook ups to any computer system (especially laptops), which allow users to access up to four drives at the same time, and best of all there’s no driver installation required. This allows users to organize their music, photos, and work data under one enclosure, making it perfect for backup applications.

The enclosure takes up to four SATA drives. To power the enclosure, it uses a direct AC outlet, perfect to use it anywhere without having to deal with any adapters. The lightweight construction design protects hard drives with a layer of solid aluminum. It has a detachable 80mm ball bearing rear fan with 3 speed settings, and uses a built-in fan-less power supply, making it a quiet device. The four hot-swappable drive trays offer great freedom of choice in expanding your storage solution and multi-drive exchangeability for easy maintenance.

  • newegg Speed-Adjustable Cooling Fan, with Smart Cooling Technology The MB561US-4S-1 Quad Bay SATA External Enclosure comes with the upgraded 80mm cooling fan that allows users to choose the speed of the fan, or to select “auto” so that the fan adjusts its speed using Smart Cooling Technology. With Smart Cooling Technology, the device automatically determines the temperature of your drives, and changes the RPM according to the airflow and cooling demand, resulting in decreased power consumption, an increased lifespan for your fan, and unnecessary excess noise.
  • newegg 4 Bay 3.5" SATA I / II / III Removable Enclosure The enclosure takes up to four SATA drives, and support SATA hot-swap. Featuring additional USB connection makes it possible to hook up to any computer system (especially laptops), which allow users to access up to four drives at the same time, and best of all there’s no driver installation required.
  • newegg e-SATA Available The MB561US-4S-1 includes a port multiplier e-SATA connection that allows you to either connect to a port multiplier JBOD adapter to access four drives via one e-SATA connection, or connect to a port multiplier RAID controller card.
  • newegg Shock Absorption HDD Tray Design The MB561US-4S-1 features shock absorption HDD tray design, making the HDD stable while in operations. Built-in fan-less power supply makes it a quiet device.

3 out of 5 eggsFan Failed

Pros: Windows/Linux worked out of the box.
Easy to install drives.

Cons: Run a little hot due to poor circulation.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these. On one the fan died frying a pair of drives. Turns out the contacts on the fan unit don't have a great connection to the body.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after just under 3 yrs.

Pros: Thankfully still under warranty. I will report back on warranty process. Worked perfect without issue for several years on eSata.

Cons: Failed in just under 3 years. Failed working with 4 drives and worked with one in unit and then that even stopped working. Drives test fine in other external enclosures, report healthy in SMART, and eSata port and cable all tested. USB or eSata neither working now, unit dead. Waiting for Icy Dock to issue RMA.

The fan on this was always very loud on high. I never noticed this since unit was always on. Now my office is near silent without this device off and I have 4 computers in this office. They really need a better fan or better design with 120 fan instead of 80.

Bad build quality to fail with limited (less 3 years) usage in cool AC environment. I have several computer peripherals going on 6+ years. Sad since unit is great looking, good design except for fan and need of trays.

Other Thoughts: Looking for other options and brands in enclosures for future as do not like loud fan and depend on build quality for business. Would love to see a 5 or 6 day trayless aluminum with 120 fan design. But that beast does not exist.

2 out of 5 eggsDied after 2 years

Pros: Made with heavy duty material. Worked fine for 2 years and had no problems with it. Easy to setup

Cons: Died after 2 years of use

Other Thoughts: Too bad newegg won't let me do a RMA for this product. The Icy Dock website says that there is a 3 year warranty and that I have to do the RMA through the re-seller (newegg), but newegg website says "This item was purchased more than 30 days ago and is no longer eligible for a replacement RMA."

2 out of 5 eggsReliability issues

Pros: Whisper quiet. I connected mine to my media center. I can hear the fan but only during very quiet moments. I love the look of it.

Cons: Unreliable. I bought two of these, one for work and one for home. One of the bays failed to recognize that a drive had been inserted within the first view weeks. Newegg sent me a replacement and two months later the replacement did the same thing, leaving me with only 3 functional bays. The one at home lasted much longer but now, nine months later, I'm down to only 3 bays in that one as well.

Other Thoughts: I would expect the problem that I'm experiencing to be resolvable by power cycling the unit but that's not the case. It seems that once the Icy Dock decides that one of the bays will no longer work, then that bay is done. At home I had plans to use all 4 bays but was only using 2 at the time of failure. It was a simple matter to move my 2nd drive over to an empty bay, but now I can no longer expand as planned unless I buy yet another unit. Obviously it's a simple matter to invoke the 2 year manufacturers warranty but given that I've done that once already and the replacement failed in the same manner, I'm reluctant to dismantle my media center and do without it knowing this will likely happen again.

3 out of 5 eggsSomewhat False Advertising

Pros: Holds 4, 3.5inch drives, hot swappable(via USB), has external power with its own power on/off switch, eSATA and USB connections with cables provided with purchase.

Cons: Main page description "The MB561US-4S-1 includes a port multiplier e-SATA connection that allows you to either connect to a port multiplier JBOD adapter to access four drives via one e-SATA connection, or connect to a port multiplier RAID controller card." What it doesn't state explicitly is the part is not included, as a standard motherboards eSATA connection, will not do the multiplier for you. Even harder is to find a proper multiplier card on newegg, which so far, I have not been able to do. You can supposedly access all four bays over USB, but I was only able to make 1 drive show up via USB as well, as the rest kept getting an I/O error over USB(with eSATA cable removed - Don't use both at the same time, or you'll have even more problems). So, stand alone, you can only use 1 drive at a time, unless you have an additional internal card for your mobo that does the multiplier.

Other Thoughts: This should be offered or bundled with the eSATA port multiplier card or at a minimum, offer links on the same purchase page, to a compatible multiplier card that works with this device. Otherwise, you can only use 1 eSATA drive connection with most motherboards.

Also, when rebooting or powering down, the system does not recognize the drive after a reboot and it disappears, causing errors. Have to power it off after powering down the PC, and turn it on AFTER booted and signed into Windows. May cause bad disk sectors over time, and require chkdsk's if you forget to power off before booting.

Don't use externally for swap space, will get page file errors after every reboot. No auto power down or such communication, which should/could be made available over USB with both cables in, but doesn't function if you try to use both cables at the same time.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy with the unit

Pros: Works well on esata with my HP ex470 server. Server has the multi estata port built in so this was a no brainer. Really love the real power cord, no external transformer or power brick. This was an inexspensive way to add more storage to my server drive pool. For me it was an out of the box, hook it up, and pop in some hard drives, and away we go. Has work flawless since

Cons: I'm not wild about the drive caddies as the air holes seem to be blocked by the locking lever, but the drives SMART data has them running about 99 deg. No owners manual, just a quick start guide.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: I have 2 of these, connected to an Ubuntu server, using a Rosewill RC-219 PCIe card. Only issue is I had to add a delay to the Ubuntu startup, as it takes awhile to scan all 8 drives. Both are full of 2TB 7200 RPM HDS drives.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have been running these enclosures 24hr a day for 8 months now, and no issues.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure!

Pros: ---- Great Design!
---- Cooling fan really helps!
---- Convenient hot-swap design
---- Fast SATA!
---- Quality Materials

Cons: None so far!

Other Thoughts: I have always been high on Icy Dock products. My previous enclosure was an older FW 400 that still kicks! I primarily use that one as a "backup loader". I have many backup hard-drives that I keep in their anti-static shield. Whenever I need to retrieve something, I just attach the sleds and push in!

It's also whisper quiet. You wouldn't think with the fan but it is!

If you are intending on running separate drives with this enclosure (as I am) getting them to initially mount separately can be an annoyance. For mine to work, I had to put them in one at a time. Once that was done, All I do is fire up the whole unit and they both dock at the same time.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Enclosure

Pros: Unit is quiet enough (I can't hear it). Easy to set up, looks nice, and is fast. Lights on front are white and are not blinding. Removing drives is easy, each drive is secured with 6 screws.

Cons: Fan stopped working after about a month, called tech support, and was advised to re-seat the fan, which worked. Price a bit steep. Extra trays are expensive as well ($20-25).
It does not turn itself off when my Mac powers down.

Other Thoughts: This unit has been running almost 24/7 for 4 months, and beside the fan issue, this is one great enclosure.

4 out of 5 eggsProblem identified

Pros: Works OK. Comes with all the cables necessary. Really needs the fan although I'm not sure how it gets air over the drives to cool them since the trays have no air intake slots. Looks good too and is quiet unless a drive vibrates a lot like one of mine does. Cute little silicone feet.

Cons: Reviewing number 2, the first one powered up, lights came on, drives spun but the interface didn't work. RMA with Newegg was quick and easy, however, the second one had the same problems except 2 drives actually showed up on the old pooter this time. That was an aha moment, for some reason the drives weren't making contact with the backplane.
The kludge: The trays have 6 holes, 3 on each side, 4 are slots, 2 are locating holes. Took the screws out of the locating holes, slid the drives back 1 silly millimeter or so and woohoo, all the drives work now no matter which slot they are in.
The trays are supposed work with other Icy Dock external enclosures and they do except there's a mechanical incompatabilty now, the locking mechanism may or may not work depending on how much out of position the drive has to be to work with the MB561US-4S-1. The solution would be to move the backplane forward enough so all the screws could be used making all the trays compatible with all the enclosures

Other Thoughts: Since the first one didn't work and Newegg allowed me to RMA it I am out FIFTEEN dollars for shipping for what was probably a working item had a done what I did to the second one. Works good now that I figured out its problem.
Thanks Icy Dock for allowing me to do your troubleshooting. Now lets see if I get my rebate after this.
P.S. I for one hate working on a new item to get it to work correctly. This is a very nice piece of equipment, it's unfortunate it has this problem or is it just me?
