To provide more accessibility to customer needs, Icy Dock introduces the MB981U3-1SA-1 2.5"/3.5" SATA & IDE Hard Drive Docking Station with a longer power cable for better accessibility to wall outlets.

The first feature of the device is a direct connection through the top slot for 2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard disk and solid state drives, allowing a user to access their drive via SuperSpeed USB 3.0. 2.5" drives can be used on the go being powered by the USB bus, while 3.5" drives utilize a much longer power adapter that can be easily be plug into normally unreachable outlets. The anti-dust cover on the top is divided into 2 pieces, so that if a 2.5" drive is inserted, only the smaller portion of the cover opens up, leaving the electronics inside safe from dust and debris.

The second feature of the MB981U3-1SA-1 is the detachable adapter that releases from the bottom of the dock via 2 small lockable switches. Once the adapter is removed, IDE drives can then be used, as well as both types of SATA drives. 3.5" IDE drives connect to the labeled input, and is powered using the 4-pin power jumper cable. 2.5" IDE drives connect to the labeled input, and can be powered using only USB power. Using SATA drives with the disconnected adapter is the same as when they are directly docked through the top slot.

Other useful elements include power buttons on the dock and adapter that double as status LEDs, a easy to press, large drive eject button, and as always, a standard 3 year warranty.

4 out of 5 eggsWorked Great - No Problems!

Pros: Didn't feel like flimsy plastic. Well built unit.
Worked with EVERY drive that we put in it.
Nice appearance and not plain looking like many other brands.
SATA and IDE which I only found with Icy Dock and not on any other unit.
USB 3.0
Nice Retail box and packaged well.

Cons: Did not like the IDE Adapter as it was flimsy and the setup was a pain to connect to a hard drive but it did work.
Would of preferred a standard plug instead of the Brick that a lot of laptops use for their power.

Other Thoughts: Overall this unit worked Great on every drive that we put in it for close to a year.
Very solid build unlike what some others have said in the past.
I just ordered another one today that is the 4TB version due to the GREAT success that we had with this unit.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Suitable for Professional Applications

Pros: SATA connectivity worked great, when it worked.

Cons: We bought two of these for our tech bench in our office, with the intention to use them daily for data migration tasks. On one, the USB 3.0 connection receptacle on the device failed by coming detached from the PCB within the first week of ownership. We aren't particularly rough on our tools, but we expect $50 docks to hold up to the demands of professional use.

The second one held out longer, but after roughly six months of ownership it too suffered the same fate, failing with the exact same issue.

IDE functionality was marginal, at best. Having to remove the connector from the dock frequently was a pain, so much so that we stopped using the docks entirely.

1 out of 5 eggssecond review CAVEAT EMPTOR

Pros: Looks good!

Cons: Doesn't work AFTER RMA! This is bad equipment; plugged into usb2 or usb3 it does not work. I purchased this as a tool - what a fool! I have a computer repair business and plug this into 6 computers

Other Thoughts: They made me send it in to them and returned it unrepaired! They tout their excellent customer service

1 out of 5 eggsNot Plug n Play DOA!

Pros: looks good, icy dock is -oops, was - good reputation.

Cons: Orange light on power up connected to usb3 port. The software fails to install automatically on Windows 7 ultimate 64bit/16gb RAM, 3,3 ghz 6 core amd proc/ native usb3 ports on motherboard; it could also be the Seagate 500 Gb Momentus XT drive that is connected thru it was bad - but then the drive was DOA...

Other Thoughts: Buying from these guys is a crapshoot - I lost again. Too bad I really needed this devicce for a trip to the bush next week. Once again - if you are going to buy from newegg, buy 2 so you know 1 will work.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 30 minutes

Pros: Both SATA and IDE.
USB 3.0

Cons: It failed within the first 30 minutes of use. I connected a 2.5" IDE drive and it recognized it just fine. After 30 minutes of use, I properly unmounted the drive, powered off the adapter and disconnected the drive from the adapter. I then plugged in a different 2.5" IDE drive. Pressed the power button on the adapter, and it didn't power up. I could actually smell the fried electronics inside. Now I have to RMA it and delay my work until I get a new one. Here's hoping the replacement lasts longer.

Other Thoughts: I was really excited because I thought this dock/adapter would be perfect. It did perform great for those first 30 minutes, but apparently the build quality sucks. I had it plugged into a high quality surge protector, and the adapter fried itself. I can only assume it was due to shoddy circuitry/parts.

It's a good thing Newegg is so good with RMAs and returns.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked nice, when it worked, although slower speeds than stated even with 7500 RPM SATA 6 drives and USB 3 interface.

Cons: Failed after 2 months

3 out of 5 eggsICY DOCK MB981U3-1SA-1

Pros: Sata capabilities work well.

Cons: IDE not so much. All cables included are too short. IDE interface pretty much blocks its own power input. USB cable too short and the weight of it makes it loose in the input of the dock. Does effect the use of sata eventually. Theres better out there for much less $$$$$

Other Thoughts: Ended up going with a cheaper adapter set up. Wouldn't buy this again.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast, stable, Looks nice. Works with all drives I've tried. Never have problems un-mounting drives using Win7 and Fedora.

Cons: Mini USB 3 connection is not very solid, so moving the unit around with a cable attached puts undue stress on it. A standard size USB 3 connector would have made it much sturdier.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Docking Station

Pros: Easy to use. Works with SATA, 3.5 IDE, and 2.5 IDE. The SATA and USB 3.0 transfers files at 45 Mb/sec.

Cons: No fan to cool the drive. I purchased a small fan from Walmart to provide this service.

Other Thoughts: The docking station works with SATA, however if you want to use the IDE function you merely unclip the lower portion of the dock and the IDE portion is now available. No instructions are really required, however Newegg has a nice video online if you need it.
