ICY DOCK MB559U3S-1S Aluminum / Plastic 3.5" Pearl White USB3.0 & eSATA Professional Ultra Slim External Hard Drive Enclosure

Pros: This is a great case that works with 4TB GPT-formated HDDs without any problem. USB3 and eSATA work both work well as expected (of course only one at a time). The case also has an on-off switch which is great. It feels well-made and durable and is also very compact compared to most 3.5" cases.

Cons: A screwdriver is needed for assembly. Furthermore it is not clear to me what is gained by the removable tray, I think tray-carrier systems are useless ever since the SATA interface was introduced. There will be very few customers that will purchase extra trays and use this case for hot swapping.

Other Thoughts: The case is expensive, but unfortunately most of the cheaper ones have bad controllers that don't work with large drives. The internal electronics are where this case really shines. I would buy it again.

Pros: The drive was easy to install, and the enclosure worked without a hitch.

Cons: The included USB cable is a bit short.

Pros: Works as expected. The levers to insert and remove the trays that hold the actual hard drives work smoothly and well.

Cons: One stopped working after 5+ years, but I'm buying another one.

Other Thoughts: I back up my machines using hard drives (and software like rsnapshot), and this ICY DOCK allows me to very easily put in a hard drive, run my backups, and remove the drive. When the drive isn't doing backups, I usually have a drive in their for auxiliary storage or online backups. The two ICY DOCKs I bought have worked well for me for 5+ years, but I'm now replacing one. Interestingly, my records show it had a four-star rating back then, but now it has none; do ratings expire?
